I think its a tough heat to score because none of the waves were great and they were both struggling to lay down big turns, but yeah those two turns for the 6.9 didn't even have that much in them, a point better than Gabs 5.8? Probably. You know if watch both JJ's waves a couple of times they are very similar, except the 7 has the vert float in the middle which arguably doesn't add much, so maybe they aren't far apart.
Yes it was odd to see it but he claims all the time with the lay back stance and the flick of the hair… but really there has been no reason to claim much this year because the waves have SUCKED.
Properly scored, correct outcome. Medina received the highest score of the heat 7.83, nearly 1 point higher than JJF wave which featured a lightning fast gouge in vertical section of the wave, plus a vertical, critical finish and was flying the entire wave - SPEED. JJF last wave featured the BEST TURN OF THE HEAT and a critical, vertical finish and again tons of SPEED. Watch that first turn in slow motion. JJF was not just snapping in the lip, he's flying up to the lip (the steepest part of the wave) and obliterating it. No one in the world is doing these types of turns.
Judges are trying really hard to do in 2024 something even more spectacular than what they did at the surf ranch last year! It’s kind of a impossible mission but they are doing their best in the Australian leg
wave size is what people are not factoring in. the 6.9 went up higher because it was a bigger wave then his 7. if it was similar in size then he would have gotten a 6. critical turn on a larger size wave. I think everyone feels for medina because of his call out last time on how he got screwed.
the problem is that they will use whataver criteria they feel like, and when it comes to brazilians, they don't give scores on how big the wave is, the criteria is just bended to favor who they want!
The devil is in the details. JJ slightly ovescored, Medina slightly underscored. Repeat. A lesson on how to manipulate the heat and, ultimately, the tour.
Why do the judges always underscore John? Why are they never rewarding him for what he does instead of penalising him by imagining what he could have done. Happy to see him get through, especially in a buzzer beater. the better surfer won the heat
wave size. the 7 was not as big. The second wave was bigger and that boosted the score a bit. I think if it was equal in size they would have given him a 6.
@jimsmith1550 you joking? the 7 was double the size and didn't completely crumble half way through, such rigged judging and even commentary at this point it's mental.
@@jimsmith1550 The WSL is not serious. The wave with 3 maneuvers received the 7 points, (include that the last maneuver JJ had to run to get the wave junction), so the wave with 2 maneuvers should receive a maximum of 6.5 points. Judging frontside and backside is tricky. I’m just an average surfer so it’s hard to know what backhand or frontside moves are considered equivalent. Backhand feels more repetitive to me and less interesting, but I feel backside surfing is more difficult than frontside at my level

Comparing the 7.0 JJF wave and the 7.83 Medina wave, that JJF two maneuvers wave could NEVER be a 6.9! Judges don't follow their own logic. The first waves should be more than 8 or that last wave should be less than 6.
I will no longer watch the events, there is something very strange behind the scenes at the WSL, why is the error always with the same athlete? How does Medina accept this? I can't do it anymore... they already take some titles away from him due to errors in judgment
Wsl can do whatever they want in close heats. Choose winners. Idk why this is rocket science judges need to be in independent cubicles and isolated 100%. They should not be able to confer with other judges. Until they do that I assume it’s all a scam

The judging was all over the place, as per usual. Watching it live, I thought Medina should have won (and I'm from Hawaii and love John). Watching it back, John did look good and his waves were a little bigger. By how WSL normally judges, it should have been Medina 100%, but I actually think John deserved that win, by a hair.
Clearly, it is important that this year the world title goes to another flag. They are afraid, they don't want Medina in Trestles in the top 5, and slowly, the doubtful results will continue until they take him out of the game. And the head judge is from Brazil, oh WSL, how smart you are, it's the perfect plan!
Instead of crying shame, try to look at the heat as a whole instead of singling out a score. I saw Medina doing the same snap multiple times on medium waves, and John surfing faster on bigger waves doing more critical turns. But that’s just me🤷🏻♂️
Yep. Medina's only got a couple of moves in his arsenal really. Funny how more people don't see this. Oh, and his wave awareness and selection is relatively... crap.
Wow. Two great rivals, very stressful, it was amazing to see John pull off that last wave. I'm Brazilian, and I thought it was fair. On Jon Jon's last wave, the size of the wave and the two maneuvers he performed, layback and ripping the fins, were plastic and very stylish... I thought 7 and 6.90 was fair. But of course Medina is the best surfer of all time ...

JJ won it. The tragedy is Houschmund was given the win over Gabe for doing the backside hacks he was doing today. Gabe must feel confused at the moment.
I think this one was relatively fair. John's 6.9 was definitely better than Medina's 5.83, it was bigger and the turns were better. I think John's 6.9 was close to his 7 cuz his second turn was better, he kicked his tail higher and disengaged his fins and the 3rd turn on his 7 was basic. Medina was fairly scored on his 7.8, lots of turns but not a big wave

@@Carlosmm53 hmm maybe on occasion😅
Looking at John's last wave a couple times, it was worth the score. Could have gone either way
Por que ainda estou assistindo essa palhaçada. Chega
Tivesse terminado a onda poderia aumentado a nota.
I don’t think judges have an easy job, look at that heat of last 16 between Tatiana and Tyler. Where Tati is being more consistent throughout the heat and then Tyler comes with an incredible performance that changed the whole thing. Well done to the Judges 👍🏽
average Brazil fan
@@Dolphinsforlife1 and you are alienated if you don't understand bias

@@clebercintra3769 yep just proved my point.
JJFs first wave seems around 9 point.
C'mon! 9? There wasn't any excellent wave from bpth surfers. Shitty conditions..
It’s like judging art at this level, and a blink can make the difference, the debate is just part of the show, which likely evens out over time 🤙🏽😎🖤 nobody going hungry here 🍔 🥩 🌮 🌽 🥔
I love all the Florence brothers They are so nice and talented.
Medina won. I'm from the USA but Medina should have won truth.
Seems to me that claiming your wave will pump your Scores and get you trough heats 🤷🏻♂️
I could see Gabriel taking a break from professional surfing after being dogged this season
it wasn't just this one.
Wsl can do whatever they want in close heats. Choose winners. Idk why this is rocket science judges need to be in independent cubicles and isolated 100%. They should not be able to confer with other judges. Until they do that I assume it’s all a scam
Good. Circle the toilet bowl!
NINGUEM TEM CORAGEM, NEM SURFISTAS E NEM A GALERA, BRASILEIRO É CONHECIDO PELO COMODISMO!!!! agora se forem fazer o protesto e parar geral, ME CHAMEM
Seria uma ótima atitude
Judges make it clear that they do not want Brazilians competing for this year's title. Kelly showed his superiority several years in a row and nothing happened.
Watching the Brazilians cry here is the most entertaining part
Second event in a row where Medina got screwed and this is coming from a huge JJ fan. People complaining have a point
@@ComedyByAlan on the other hand, this is the second event Medina has make a huge mistake. John had sell him the last wave only to take the better second wave. Cole was under priority.
They have a point for sure, but this role of victims and constantly crying sucks.
Medina won for sure!
PORRA!! 💪💪💪💪🇺🇸 🇺🇲 🇺🇸 🇺🇲
I think the fact that one judge gave a 7.2 on JJF's last wave and a 7 on his best wave is proof that something is very wrong with the judging.
Two judges went slightly higher. Points for the claim
So nice to listen jj speaking how gabe act on a heat..amazing..these things we all know, but coming ditectly from jj is great! Made me laught a lot
Vamo pra cima em Saquarema
Great scoring!
Shame> Again. JJ's last wave was a 6.00.
i agree.
You win some, you lose some. Im a Florence fan but i think Medina won that heat. John should have ridden his Ghost. It is what it is.
That was one turn!!! Boom! 6,90!… They gone retired Medina that way!!
His turns were more late and critical, bringing those snaps/carves back from 2-3 o’clock is insane. Gabby only got to 6 o’clock
Clearly, it is important that this year the world title goes to another flag. They are afraid, they don't want Medina in Trestles in the top 5, and slowly, the doubtful results will continue until they take him out of the game. And the head judge is from Brazil, oh WSL, how smart you are, it's the perfect plan!
on average, how much is claim worth? seems to get people through heats
First time in a long time Margies hasn’t delivered waves. Feels wrong to watch these guys grovel out there.
What a stunning opening shot. 🤩
Medina won all day. His first combo on the 7.83 was insane, the first turn was too good of backhand snap.
6,90 em uma rasgada praticamente. Tá osso!
Medina would be screaming at the end of that one .24 loss😆😆😆
I was going for John John but that last wave was not a 6.9... hate to say it as I don't really like Medina but Medina got robbed
i agree
Instead of crying shame, try to look at the heat as a whole instead of singling out a score. I saw Medina doing the same snap multiple times on medium waves, and John surfing faster on bigger waves doing more critical turns. But that’s just me🤷🏻♂️
Yep. Medina's only got a couple of moves in his arsenal really. Funny how more people don't see this. Oh, and his wave awareness and selection is relatively... crap.
Wow. Two great rivals, very stressful, it was amazing to see John pull off that last wave. The unfixable thing about these contests is, its such a shame to see such skilled big wave athletes to have to compete under the worst wave conditions. Wish events are not planned out but called on where there are the best waves predicted a week before the contest
@@roguebossa Yes, Jon Jon made a lot of mistakes, but you only have to judge the two best waves ...
Yes, I'm also using a translator, I only understand Portuguese ...
I live near Imbituba - Brazil, where there have been wsl stages ... greetings Hawaiian friend ;;;
Hah. Yeah. Medina the goat. Ugh.
Contests hardly do any justice to John and in some ways don't fit his style best.
Gabe won this - johns last wave was a 5.8. If it was a 6.9 then gabes long one was a 10.
Florence finally figuring out that claims add points! Been working well for the Brasillians jajajajaja kkkkkk
I thought TWright popped a boob on her big claim 💥🎯👀
not only the waves are horrible, but judging criteria has been so off lately that it’s getting hard to keep watching.
I’m a JJF fan but I think Medina won this heat
Yeah it's hard, because I've seen John get ripped off so many times, but Gabe surfed clean and didn't make any real mistakes.
Bateria equilibrada.
Love to hear the braz rage! 😘🥰
SHAAAAAAME WSL!
John John duas manobras e nota 6.90, juízes da WSL vão tomar no meio daquele lugar.
Such a shame on the conditions
🤡
Tá de de sacanagem wsl!

John’s last wave was a 5. That’s funny.
