Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a 2004 role-playing video game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the GameCube. The Thousand-Year Door is the second game in the Paper Mario series following Paper Mario, and is part of the larger Mario franchise. In the game, when Mario and Princess Peach get involved in the search for a mystic treasure that holds great fortune, Peach is kidnapped by an alien group called the X-Nauts; Mario sets out to find the treasure and save the princess.
The Thousand-Year Door borrows many gameplay elements from its predecessor, such as a drawing-based art style, and a turn-based battle system emphasizing correctly timing moves. For most of the game, the player controls Mario, although Bowser and Princess Peach are playable at certain points between chapters. The game was announced at the 2003 Game Developers Conference, and was released late July 2004 in Japan and late 2004 worldwide.
The Thousand-Year Door was acclaimed at release and is since considered one of the greatest video games of all time. It won the "Role Playing Game of the Year" award at the 2005 Interactive Achievement Awards, and is often considered the best game in the series. A remake was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2024. The game was followed by Super Paper Mario, which was released for the Wii in 2007.

I did for the TTYD remake.
I had a spare POW for the Clefts, so I got to fill their Tattle Log entry early and get free Star Points.

If I recall correctly, badges can drop as well, albeit being at a super low %. It would have been hilarious if Masae got the badge after saying it is inaccessible without Steal.
From what I remember they usually hover at around the 1/100 or 1/200 mark. Very rare regardless of which number is the case.

For people wanting to 100%, not using/tossing/cooking the Coupons could be considered.

You get a good number of Star Points for failing the quiz and fighting the Clefts, as well as allowing you to get the Tattle entry for them early, but not a major thing to skip.

I really love this game, but its actually kinda a funny story for me. I only just got to play it because of the remake. I played the original Paper Mario when it came to NSO and loved it alot (and thats also how i found your channel, because of your walkthrough of Paper Mario😅). After i finished the first one, i KNEW this game existed but i didn't know anything about it. I could've watched a walkthrough of this games years ago, but i decided instead to hold out hope that this game would actually get remade and i could experience it myself and I'm glad i did. I actually got to experience alot of the game like people who played it back in the day which im kinda shocked by. So not exactly the most exciting story of playing the game for the first time, but im glad now i finally understand why people were so hard on Origami King. (I personally didn't hate the game, i actually like it, but after playing the first 2, i definitely understand alot more) sorry for the long comment 💜✌️
Hot tip: items are fantastic early game. You really don't need to hoard coins until much later in the game, so spend and buy all you can especially on damage items. Most enemies early game have such low HP that a single Fire Flower item could potentially instant win any battle for free XP/ Star points. Ending fights early is good for long dungeon s at early levels because it saves HP and FP for bigger fights/bosses. I also want to point out that the remake allows you to start the game by carrying 15 items instead of the original's 10, making battle items a much more viable tactic until you can upgrade your inventory!
I really appreciate how they hide those POW Blocks between battles in the fortress. Like, yes you could run back to town and buy them, but it's clever design (and more rewarding) to have them hidden nearby instead!
Also, what's with that weird forced battle? I don't think that was in the original, but a similar tutorial still existed somewhere. Interesting.
One of the few, perhaps only, thing I miss from the original, is the stupid high pitch scream audience members made when they ran away 😂

Goombella's log, episode 5
So... Is it weird that just outside a town inhabited by Koopas, there's a bunch of Bad-Guy Koopas? I think it's weird, but is it just me?
Anyway, we found a bunch of them on the way to Schwonk Fortress (another dumb name, maybe related to Hooktail, too?). We also encountered DEADLY TRAPS! ...or we _would_ have, if not for the large pile of POW blocks laying about everywhere (and also the few we bought ourselves) - Apparently nobody is immune to the power of POW! (Unless you can fly like Jr Troopa can - I'm a bit surprised that dweeb hasn't shown up yet, actually...)
So anyway, we faced those traps and stormed the fortress to encounter... a... quiz show?
Not what I was expecting. Like, maybe a fight? But nah, quizzes for us, apparently. I almost felt bad for that swanky Thwomp... OH! THAT'S why it's called Schwonk Fortress! It's like a portmanteau of Swank and Thwomp! Actually kinda clever, not gonna lie.
Anyways, that's done, and we're gonna head into the basement to get those keys. Hopefully there's nothing gross down there...

Time for differences between this game and the original.
-> First - the forced fight/tutorial wasn't in the original, because it already happened when Frankly explained star power
-> Now that it's shown up, I'll explain enemies with items (and badges) - in the original game, IIRC, they never used those items they were holding, nor were the badges "equipped"
-> Kinda obvious, but dynamic music wasn't part of the original game IIRC
I always love it when people come up with creative comments like this. Some people create stats for the gameplay, some add depth to the story or characters, gives more reason to scroll through the comments which I don't imagine many people do
I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I feel like in the audience, WHO is there can determine what they do. I feel like Toads tend to have helpful items, Goombas bad items, and Shy Guys manipulate the stage itself more often than not
That is exactly the case! The Battle Master goes into a bit more detail but each type of audience member has their own unique gimmick. As you picked up on, Toads have the best items and Shy Guys can mess with the stage. There are other types we'll be seeing along the way.

aww it's too bad you didn't get the random drop of the badge. i got that for an enemy later in this chapter that randomly had like, mega rush P or something, which led to something hilarious later down the road lol

It’s not a Paper Mario game without a quiz show of some sort. Speaking of, time for more trivia! Once again, I’ll primarily be focusing on a music bit, an overworld bit, and a battle bit. Without further ado, let’s get started.
Music:
Once again, there’s not too much to speak of in regards to music here, so instead, let’s talk about some obscure weirdness. You probably noticed the bushes along the way to Schwonk Fortress. But did you know that if you were to “use the wind,” in the OG, you’d be able to actually blow away the bushes on the first screen out of Petalburg? We’re not really sure why this is the case or why it only happens on the first screen, but it was removed from the remake. You don’t really have a reason to go back to Schwonk Fortress after Chapter 1, so this was actually only discovered somewhat recently.
Overworld:
So the 65th Super Fun Quirk Quiz (or Annual Quiz-Off) is a fun little test of whether you’ve been paying attention and tattling things along the way. However, there are two interesting things about the quiz. First off, if you miss 3 questions, you have to fight 4 Clefts. These are the same as Bald Clefts, only with spikes. While this can be difficult if done legitimately, a pow block can make this an easy 20 Star Points. Secondly, why is it specifically the 65th quiz? Well, in the original Paper Mario, there was a fellow named Chuck Quizmo who would ask you 64 questions and give you a star piece for each question. So the Quirk Quiz is actually a continuation of the quizs from Paper Mario. Paper Mario did always enjoy its quiz games.
Battle:
There are a few things to talk about regarding battle, but for now, we’ll stick to the stage. Another defining aspect of TTYD is the use of a literal stage. We start with the Rising Star stage, which can hold 50 audience members. Most of the time when you or the enemy attacks, there is a chance of a stage event occurring. The following stage events can happen on the Rising Star stage:
-A basin/bucket falls and deals 1 damage to someone with a 50% chance of dizziness
-A fork falls and deals 2 damage to someone
-A spotlight falls and deals 1 damage to someone with a 25% chance of inflecting electrify
-Some background props fall, dealing 1 damage to one side of the stage. Depending on the map, up to 3 sets of props can fall in one battle.
Something interesting about the remake is that not only can props exclusively target one side of the field, all props now do piercing damage, so all enemies will be damaged.

The extra POW Block comes in handy if you want to get more experience from the Clefts by intentionally answering Thwomp’s questions wrong.

It's about time the curse of items never used, meaning an inventory never empty and full of useless items, was addressed. Onward to Shhwonk Fortress, listening to more of this fully orchestrated Thousand Year Door soundtrack along the way.
I never knew the enemies could make use of the badges they held.
Fun fact! There's a chance a badge can drop after a fight! And as it turns out, that chance ISN'T affected by stealing it during the battle! So if the RNG gods are in good graces, you could actually get a badge twice!

Hahaha no it was an honest question! I didn't take it as rude, no worries at all. I will warn you that even though I did figure it out, I ... Still have no idea what the timing is for the hammer. I've been quietly trying but haven't gotten it yet and I'm pretty far ahead in recording. When it happens I'll definitely pop off though
