I love the line "Caterpillars dream, butterflies fear", I don’t know exactly what the intended message is but I take that as a metaphor of growing older. When you’re younger, the caterpillar, you’re always obsessed with being older and never really question your morality, the butterfly however is scared of the fact that it will eventually die. It really sums up the irrational thinking of the Elders and their obsession with eternal life.

i personally interpreted that as maturity. When you're yet to fully grow and mature immortality sounds wonderful (such as if you're the elders who never really grew up past their obsession). Once you're older and properly mature enough to understand the meaning of death and the horrors of immortality you end up fearing it. Basically Hong Lu grew up while the elders are manchildren
Death and transformation go hand in hand. Caterpillar becomes butterfly trough death, yet no such fate awaits butterfly in turn. When caterpillar dreams of death, it dreams of change, when butterfly fears change, it fears death.
There is a poem called "Butterfly Dream" by the Taoist scholar Zhuangzi, and this canto is based off the Chinese literary classic called "Dream of the Red Chamber", so I think that's what gave the inspiration for the lyrics here. They also included part of a Confusian classic as well in another part.

At the beginning I was rather unsure what to feel about Canto 8 as I didn't care that much about Hong Lu as a character, but PM made me care, I think it's definitely top 3.

This is the 2nd time I’ve seen this typa comment
something that i love about this song is the illustration. of course it can be seen as limbus characters : the robot hands (our POV) is the elders and jia mu, the girl is hong lu and the twelve silhouettes in the back are the other sinners including dante
but outside of the game, and with the lyrics, the illustration already speaks volumes.
The girl is leaving, waving goodbye to the robot as she turns around to walk on a new path, one that has just started (notice how the path only starts a few steps away from the girl). The robot is still trying to frame her, see her in a specific way, but it can't. She's turning to petals, to show that she won't be there forever, she'll eventually scatter away and vanish. Then the final chorus hits, and it just feels like she is telling the robot "I'll do more, be more, and live more on borrowed time than you will ever achieve in your immortality." without mocking it, or acting like she's superior. It's simply what she chose to do, what she chose to live. Her new path is starting, and the robot can only watch.

this canto was targeted to a pretty specific sector of people so not many could feel all that was to be felt, but those who were in a situation like hong lu's got hit really hard. me included
I've seen a lot of people react negatively to the ending because it wasn't "potent" enough or it just felt rushed, when there wasn't much to put indepth to since the whole thing was hong lu having enough will to take decisions for himself, hong lu just isn't the type to crashout like the people in the last cantos except for like Yi sang, they have in similar ways, more emotional endings rather than dopamine filled fights.

no literally... when the canto started i realized just how much i resonate with hong lu and his "i cant change anything no mater what i do" mindset. i was so scared that things would keep getting worse, because to me, it kind of made me feel like "well if hong lu doesnt get better i cant either", as silly as it sounds. the ending was perfect for me. man. man what a canto. i have a bit more hope for myself now :))
i like to see the cantos i find to be good but not peak in this way, it may not have been peak in my eyes but to the people it was meant for it must be life changing

Out of Limbus context, which makes this song a happy one, I take this song as a farewell of someone who's passing away prematurely. Now it feels so much sadder and more bittersweet.
You could say it's a farewell from one of the Sinner's perspective. Farewell to the pain of the past, finally gathering the strength to reclaim his life, his emotions, his will. Or, rather, accepting it, finally.
I really like that it’s a song about embracing mortality in front of the elders
I find this song is a healing one, coming to terms with the nature of life after a past of trauma. Especially if you take into consideration other songs like Hero, Fly My Wings, and Compass which are all about the acceptance of that trauma; the same darkness I think that is in their earlier songs like Camelia, Red Dahlia, and Rosetta.

I've said this to my friends, but I love how metawise this kinda feels like the other side of Children of the City, and draws interesting connections between Hong Lus arc and Yans arc from Library of Ruina. The reclamation of "Humanity" and learning to truly care again from a life dulled with Nihilism to not be hurt anymore, versus a slow erosion of faith and eventual breakdown into total Nihilism over learning the reason why so many suffer is so seemingly "nothing".
In many ways, Children of The City is like the "Bad End ID" of Tian Tian in a sense. And I love Tian Tian even more for it
I also like how like every canto, what prevent each sinners for falling into despair is having each other.
Hong Lu has seen the previous sinners story, and that and his experience bring back his heart again.

For every canto, the finale was peak emotion. This song is calmer because, for Hong Lu, showing any emotion is peak.

@sansclone1874 Interestingly, I'd say the developments of Yan and Hong Lu are kinda opposite. Yan originally wanted to make his own decisions, and tried to manage that by going against the prescripts only to give in to them and give up his free will once he found out that prescripts had foreseen all he would do. In contrast, Hong Lu originally (after *the incident*) simply chose to go along with the flow, carrying no desires or will of his own, but then through the canto re-developed his autonomy.
I also think part of the feeling of similarity to Children of the City may be the filtered voice on the speech parts, which use a similar/the same filter as the 400km and value of e parts in Children of the City.
there's more than just the music that's different, too.
each canto song normally has the sinner at their worst/not great state (think "Fly, Broken Wings" or "I Am Your Biggest Fan"), before progressing to their new view ("Fly, Perfect Wings"/"I Am My Biggest Fan").
Tian Tian however immediately begins with "I Don't Need Eternity" and always maintains the same unchanging theme of Hong Lu doing what he wants now, and believing immortality isn't that great.

I truly did not expect this Canto to be like it was. The metaphor behind the blindfold being wrung out for tears in Land of Illusion, all the way to him opening the flood gates in the final fight and allowing them to truly let loose was something else.
I don't know how Project Moon or Mili do it, but they truly exceed my expectations every single time they publish something new. This may even be peaker than Canto 6.

I love how we see the image from the "robot's" perspective
Because the robot/puppet is immortal, showing us no emotion, while the girl is slowly turning into petals, meaning she's slowly dying, but still smiling as she waves bye bye to the robot, given they will never meet again, as the girl joins the group of 12 people in the background.
Even the picture is related to the canto.
i believe that it represents hong lu/jia baoyu choosing his own path and returning with the sinners as there are 13 sinners and the robot represents his past life that he came to end and forever forget about giving us real smiles

This song actually hit me more harder than it should, always had a dead beat dad never around me in my childhood but when all of a sudden I’m successful in life he wants me back in his life. Always felt like my life had no meaning during high school but the more I grow up the more I take it as simple and fulfilling I can make it, struggles will always be there but the amount of people and friends I’ve met will always be my light in my world.

I relate to Hong Lu and his canto so so much. I had severe depression as a child and was told to just accept it. I wanted to help people only to be told it is useless. I grew up just like Hong Lu, nihilistic, living to be alive, no ambition, no wish, nothing more than an empty shell of meat and bones. Just watching life rolling before my eyes. And then I moved out for university and started to have freedom and to go with other people. At first it was an empty smile, letting others decide. After a while I started to make decisions and after that I started to live for myself. Hong Lu made peace with his past, with his pain, but not with him living. This canto wasn't like the others, to face the sinners with their trauma that they wanted to avoid. This canto put Hong Lu in the position to relive and to reclaim his life, to live as he is, the gentle and kind man he was as a boy. Hardened by the world, more open to conflict, but also open to kindness and care for others, now more than ever.
Limbus company is curing depressions now
I particularly related with how his favorite part was not having a choice and not wanting to remember nor forget memories.

Just finished this canto today and I have to say this was both heartbreaking and wholesome, hung lu’s past was pretty traumatic and honestly didn’t think he went through all that but goes to show how much a smile can hide what someone truly feels. But glad that hung Lu finally found his OWN path in the end! Love the music too great work mili

While a famous Confuscian saying, I think this is yet another denouncement to Immortality, and affirmation to the value of one's experiences in life.
All people are born the same; it is the life we live, the experiences we feel, the moment we go through, that makes us who we are. Not merely "existing", but cherishing every fleeting moment. Hong Lu understands this through his fellow Sinners: each of them has a different story, it is their story that shape their egos. Fragile and fleeting as they may be, they are willing to undertake it, because each has their own reason to go on, because "such is life".
The Xianren is content in stagnating, dragging out their existence. They are free from aging and death, yet are prisoners of their immortality, unable to experience life. Therefore they have to grind down a young boy into a husk, a gem, to leech off of his life and experiences.
Hong Lu has had enough. Thanks to Kong Jiu and his fellows, he had realised the "want" and kindness in his heart has not dissappeared, like the kite that had never left HongYuan. It is this virtue that drives him to wish to protect Xichun. He rejects the nihility planted in his heart, and opening the dam for his emotions, his tears to burst forth. Only by not repressing one's heart can one truly live out his fleeting moments.
It's extremely powerful and moving, despite being an old concept.
It's a very Confucian statement. Confucius believed that all human beings are born inherently good. The example given is that upon hearing a child cry for help at the bottom of a well, most people would feel alarmed or distressed. Whether or not they help is one thing, and their motives are another, but it's in our nature to feel that distress when another human being is in danger. Our natures are similar; our habits differ.
There’s also the fact that it’s implied that Jia Mu was actually a lot like Xichun earlier in life before the Worm made her obsessed with both immortality and recognition from the Xianren.
Just like what would’ve happened to Xichun, she went from a fragile, meek girl to a vile woman obsessed with immortality and vindication.
It may also be why she distorted so quickly, all it took was Carmen giving her just a bit of the recognition that she was starved of for Jia Mu to finally lose what little sanity she had left.

More the effect of the bollus she ate, do remember she was trying to make a 13 branch of the Heishou, with her attacks mimicking the branches we havent seen yet, with the bough giving it just enough of a boost to it to make her transform into a beast... Or rather, another one of the Xianren, another immortal elder trapped eternally.

This canto subverted many expectations the community and including myself had. Nobody (at least nobody on our side) died, nor did Hong Lu break down and let his emotions out in anger. Instead, we got a canto where who we thought would be out biggest enemy turned out to be our biggest ally and no ally deaths despite how many red flags there were. Personally, I'd say this is all because of Hong Lu deciding to make a choice and have agency over his life once again. To stop his nihilistic believes that nothing matters and all will fade away anyways and finally take action once more, realizing that he DOES have a choice, that he CAN change things and that him and his choices MATTERED. This canto, specifically part 3, was a slow burn imo. Hong Lu didn't have a sudden epiphany but rather slowly began to accept his past values back into his life upon the realization that even if his choices end up in vain, they still hold meaning. That's my answer to what TIAN TIAN means. To enjoy the sweetness of the journey no matter how short it may be, to stand up against injustice instead of pretending not to care, to take in every waking moment and the weight it bears, and to love and care one another alongside the bonds we hold for eachother.
Such is life.

i saw a lot of people saying this canto was lacking in "emotional climaxes" or whatever, but honestly... this is what made me love this canto. hong lu's story isnt some grandiose and quixotic adventure intertwining several bloodfiends and what it means to dream and refuse ones nature. nor is it a multidimensional drama about how moving past your own fears and prejudices is the only way to truly speak to your loved ones from the heart, and break free from the same cycles that might've confined you two to despair. its simply about learning how to live. about how even if you feel like the world failed you and you failed the world, that it is okay to try and be vulnerable again, because ultimately, everyone around is just as scared of living in this world as you are.
also if you couldnt consider that scene of hong lu finally letting go and accepting what he feels as an "emotional climax" thats a completely you problem lol

i like how almost every limbus company final canto boss song are not too intense but tells their backstory more
The line "We're invited to a lifelong party/It's rude to overstay" hit me really hard as someone who is 30 or 40 years old. I can feel the realization of my own imminent mortality really properly gripping me with a kind of raw fear as it tempts me to blaze forward, working on the stuff I want to be done while ignoring anything else in hopes that I can grasp some kind of immortality for myself through what writings I can make. So the message of this song hits something that I feel very, very deeply... that you really can't do that if you want to live a meaningful life. If I spend all my time burning myself out without considering what's around, there'll be nothing left. To make anything meaningful, I have to accept the limitations of my existence. To handle that, I have to like. Live life, too.

Anyways I think this is my favorite mili song of the moment, having overthrown Iron Lotus. I'm just a fan of this style of instrumentation in general, and while Children of the City didn't QUITE hit my sensibilities properly for me to like it, this one's nailed it.

It is quite funny to see how Gubo was the whole time present, and not only was humbled on multiple times, not only was brushed aside. Dante had to specifically remark how he was frantically searching in the water to make him look even more like someone who awkwardly is trying his best.
