Spinners would have been great for me yesterday.. hiked up to an alpine lake that is known for good cutthroat, only to get 15-20mph winds right as I got the fly gear out.
Dude! Thanks for clipping your barbs! We have had a serious influx of fishermen this year in Colorado. Mostly due to people not having work during this pandemic. I wish more people would clip their barbs out here. Excited to see where else you went in my home state!
Yeah it was kind of crazy while I was there to be honest. I guess its a good thing that so many people are fishing.. but it can also be annoying. Either way we had an absolutely amazing time! And have some amazing footage.
If you haven't hit up Pueblo, we have some great winter fishing. Come fish, grab some food and beer downtown. Walter's Brewery, Shamrock Brewery, Reservior Brewing, and Brues Alehouse to name a few.
Hardman Fishing Adventures Didn’t do great but I caught 5 trout, 3 fall fish and a chub. Biggest trout was around 11 inches and biggest fall fish was 15.5 inches
Watching you explain upstream v. downstream spin fishing, with bugs popping behind you is difficult as a fly fisherman lol. I will say though, I learned something of value. Fish the excess water on side of the road b/c according to your expert spin fisherman friend, that's where they are. Cool video, excited for the series in CO. Good job man, tight lines!
Yeah I 100% caught some trout on dry flies just after that little interview. I (of course) had my fly rod with me. Colorado is a different beast and I can't wait to show everyone the videos! I don't care if they do well or not it was some of the most fun I've ever had.
Best spinners on the market, hands down are Joe's Flies. Get a variety if sizes. Always fish gold blades. Best patterns are Brown Hackle, Joe's Favorite and Black Wooly Worm. I catch 1000 plus Trout a year ( yes, I guide on the side). At least 1/3 of them are on spinners. Lighter sizes you'll need a small split shot about 12 inches above the lure. They come of course with a treble trailer hook which is,easily clipped off leaving single fly hook. Give these a try, fish them properly and they will consistently outfish any other spinner. Figure these and Trout Magnets out and you will forget about the fly rod. Trust me, I hit all methods and spinning is by far more productive. Thru the years I've had to prove that to 100 or more fly rodders . Luv your channel and good fishing
I agree joe's flies are very good spinners. I tend to go with black gnat or white a lot personally, although I don't think colors matter too much. I disagree that spinner fishing is always more productive though. I think it depends on where you're fishing and what the trout are keying in on. I'd say its about 50/50 assuming you have a good fly angler. A great example is my brother was fly fishing during this video and he caught bigger fish than we did on the day (and bout the same number) because he was specifically keying in on what hatches were going off. A lot of times higher pressured areas the fish are wise to most spinner techniques.
@@hardmanfishing Both will work I agree and I do both consistently. I'm the opposite side of you on pressured fish. I guide in VA and NC. On pressured fish you have greater ability for reaction strikes with lures and the like. I've caught thousands both ways and enjoy both. Life depending on it and money on the line, I'll win with my spinning rod 8 times out of 10. Either way it's fun. Keep up the good work and right lines.
@@bjnelson9490 Reaction strikes do work a lot of the time. I guess I'd say reaction strikes and hatches going off even themselves out in my mind. But I've never fished NC! Thanks for watching and for having a convo without an argument.. seems rare on the internet these days. Tight lines!
@@hardmanfishing No need for argument. We're on the same Trout Team. We have excellent fishing in Western NC. Especially our delayed harvest program. They stock this 5 times a year from Oct. Thru May. Single hook artificial only. I am very fortunate to have 5 of those streams within 30 minutes of my house. Any day I want to go for 9 months it is a party so to speak. 15 to 20 each day is really no challenge. On stocking days if i have time 100 is not out of the question. Did that twice this past year. I go quite a bit after work, 2 to 3 good hours of fun. I've been all over Southeast, Canada and some of the West. Fished Northern Arkansas multiple times as well. Actually like the Little Red better out there. Enjoyed talking with you and keep videos coming . If u ever need a contact for NC my email is troutdrbj@gmail.com Take care
Yessir it does! A little hatch was going off and the fish started going crazy. I caught a few fish on some little dry flies off camera. Always a fun time! Thanks for watching
On all of my spinners and spoons for trout I clip off two of the three hooks on the treble plus I close the barb on the remaining hook Those treble hooks can do some serious damage I love to spin cast Predator strike on light tackle is hard to beat It’s just too much fun
I tried cutting the hooks on a Panther Martin to make it a single hook spinner and it threw the balance off.Going barbless is a good idea, thanks. For some reason l never thought of that.Great Video.
Do you prefer 2 piece rods or one piece cause I just bought a St croix premier 56 two piece was gonna return it cause people say 2 piece rods don't have as good action
I don't think it ultimately matters. I've used both and like the fact that it is easy to pack a 2 piece. 1 piece rods tend to be annoying sometimes but the action is slightly better. Depends on what you value more.
@@hardmanfishing so you don't think the action on a 2 piece is much different from a one piece cause I have a one piece st croix and the 2 piece primier i got doesn't seem like a super big difference
I caught a HUGE brownie today above boulder and literally no one was in sight! When everyone’s going south and not catching anything besides paddle boarders, Im going west and tearing them fish up! Lol 😎
Hey man what river are you at? I'm in Fort Collins and I mostly do standard fishing but I've tried top water fishing in rivers can you tell me what weight line you're using? My setup isn't great for top water, basically casts out a whopping foot in front of me lol
Well this river was near Breckenridge. And it was technically a creek (Trib of Blue River). And I'm not sure what your issue is. If you're having trouble casting it may or may not be your line. Double check to make sure your line wt matches your rod and reel. Also make sure your fly line is made to cast dry flies (make sure its is floating line). I'd need more info to help you out anymore! But thanks for watching
Yes I was using 6 pound mono line.. I'm not sure what you mean but type of drag? I try to keep it loose enough so a big fish won't break me off but not so loose that the little guys can pull drag.
Perhaps replace the treble hook with a single? When I buy spinners I replace the trebles. Some companies are now selling single hooked lures to meet state req. Thanks.
Go try something slightly heavier! It allows you to make more accurate casts and control what your spinner is doing a little bit better. Although I do completely understand staying light (especially in really small streams)
No not really, once you use a particular spinner or set of spinners for a while you can kind of tell when you're close to the bottom and how fast to real to avoid that. It's part of what I was talking about with things I can't really teach you, you just have to get out there and learn it. Thanks for watching!
Hardman Fishing Adventures Yeah, sometimes I even pop it hard enough to make the blade stop for a split second. They can feel that vibration hesitate, sort of imitates something injured
Okay first of all what do u mean four like baseball?😂 also if u were paying attention he is fishing in Colorado witch along with Wyoming has one of the highest populations of cutties.
Technically yes, although cutthroat don't usually exist in places with the other species of trout do. Out east that was indeed a slam.. Thanks for watching!
Hartman is from W VA so slam should include a Golden. I've actually done that 6 times. Even caught 5 species one day. Threw in a Tiger Trout for good measure
I've never been all fly fishing my guy! I just do what I enjoy. I'm sorry to hear that you stopped watching, glad you came back to check out a video! Thanks for watching
I don't disagree, there are a lot more advanced forms of fishing. But it doesn't mean that fishing with spinners and spin fishing in general doesn't require some degree of knowledge to be good at it.
I have to disagree with you on your point about Colorado-bladed spinners spinning better. A French blade will outperform a Colorado blade in pretty much all types of water because it spins around much easier. It will also go deeper much easier. I also disagree with your kudos about Joe's Flies. Those things are junk. They are too light. Even in small streams I use 1/8-ounce spinners and they work great. I also don't think someone wearing a white hat should be giving tips on spinner fishing. Tip number one should be that you do your best to remain unseen by the trout. Wearing a white hat is borderline idiotic. Sorry to be a curmudgeon but one of my pet peeves is watching videos of nimrods who think they are experts.
Joe’s Fly’s BABY FTW!!! The trout slayer!
They never fail!!
I walked 7 miles of this creek from the gas station into town. Easily one of the best days fishing you’ll have in Colorado 👌🏽
Yeah we enjoyed this little creek! Lots of fish for sure. Thanks for watching!
Very cool and the trout were gorgeous.
Good tips, beautiful fish.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed

When fishing for trout with a spinner and Colorado blade- are you putting bait on the hook ? I am a beginner fisherman
Nope, all you need is the spinner
Hardman Fishing Adventures
Do you tie the spinner straight to the line or do you use a swivel?
Hey man what river are you at? I'm in Fort Collins and I mostly do standard fishing but I've tried top water fishing in rivers can you tell me what weight line you're using? My setup isn't great for top water, basically casts out a whopping foot in front of me lol

Yes I was using 6 pound mono line.. I'm not sure what you mean but type of drag? I try to keep it loose enough so a big fish won't break me off but not so loose that the little guys can pull drag.

That is always a good option, most regs where I fish do not say you can't use trebles, just that the hooks have to be barbless.
Where is this in colprado
Are you going to fish the eagle river ?
Yes! It will be Episode 3 of THE COLORADO SERIES, which begins this Friday!
Joes flys and panther martins are the only spinners I trust, also anything heavier than 1/8 tho is too heavy for streams
Go try something slightly heavier! It allows you to make more accurate casts and control what your spinner is doing a little bit better. Although I do completely understand staying light (especially in really small streams)
Hardman Fishing Adventures what’s your favourite joes flys color?
Dude you should go to Estes Park in Colorado
I actually wasn't too far from there! Thanks for watching the video!
Do you not get the spinner caught (hanked) on the rocks or bottom a lot? Enjoy your stuff guys 👌

It's part of what I was talking about with things I can't really teach you, you just have to get out there and learn it. Thanks for watching!
My best results come from reeling very slow and popping it here and there
Popping your spinner can work great! It adds something that could trigger a strike. Just make sure the blades keep spinning
Hardman Fishing Adventures Yeah, sometimes I even pop it hard enough to make the blade stop for a split second. They can feel that vibration hesitate, sort of imitates something injured
I'll never understand why people catch and release using treble hooks
Totally. I remove them from everything.
How about how to read moving water, knowing where to cast.
I'll be covering that at some point. It's not always something I think about although I definitely do need to do it. Thanks for watching!
Get better hookup ratio casting upstream than casting down stream especially if the fish are short striking
Step one only skill you need is knowing how to cast.. step two, cast and retrieve and that’s it.
That is a very simplified version... but yes technically that is how go fishing HAHAHA
Hardman Fishing Adventures sure is or you can do this, cast, retrieve, pause, retrieve, twitch, retrieve.
If you don’t catch anything casting up stream try down stream. Thats not a tip. Thats common sense.
How old is this your bundled up?🤣🤣🤣
Listen it was like 55 degrees and I'm used to 85 degrees! I also had shorts on so I get some points
