When it comes to customization everyone always says “ dont give up”! This is actually really good advice. When we watch customization videos it’s important to remember that it is a slow, tedious process that is usually takes a week or two to complete but sped up into 15 minutes so it looks like it doesn’t take that long.In reality the process involves lots of layers to build pigment. There honestly isn’t a right or wrong way to. It’s all what you want it to look like. I know Elvira from the Doll Circle customized a Ken doll with magic markers as well and it turned out really good. Some viewers kinda freaked she used markers because of staining and bleeding, but the point is she did it the way she wanted to. I’ve tried repainting and a fun doll to practice on is the barbie clones from the 60’s -70’s since they all have kind of basic faces and you get a great result in a short amount of time, since there wasn’t a huge amount of detail in the eyes and lips. Eyebrows are hard a.f to paint at least for me lol. For me, I just do small thin strokes until I get the size and shape I want. I think it would be fun to paint google eyes 👀.
Thank you for letting us live vicariously through you as you navigate doll customization ❤ I think you did a great job, and it was an informative fun video to watch ❤
Hi Enzo, just a little help here, when applying MSC, you need to put 3 light coates, about a 1/2 hour of drying time in between, also not colored pencils, but watercolor pencils, not sure that is what you were using, also a spraying of MSC between to preserve your progress and not scratch or wipe it off. Please don't take what I am saying as "I know better than you", not what I'm trying to do. I enjoy watching your videos, just thought that I would help you out with some mistakes. you did a great job for your first time.
Great first try! I’ve always thought it would be fun to take a class on repainting fashion dolls. Years ago I was at a doll show and there was a guy who repainted Fashion Royalty dolls. I asked him what he would charge to repaint a dolls eyes and he says $150! Yikes! I took his card but never took it any further. I would love to learn how to do this properly, including recommended paints, finishes ect. Thanks for letting us watch your first attempt! 💗
I love doll customization videos! I would love to see more content like this from your channel. 😁 It was a good go at it, and I appreciate you being vulnerable with sharing your art. That can be a stressful thing to do, especially when it’s something new. As a doll collector and customizer myself, I have a few tips for you. This is of course just my opinion and is based on what works for me. Take what works and throw the rest out lol 1 It’s important with Mr Super Clear to have a really solid coat before proceeding further. That may require a couple sprays with dry time between, before painting or drawing. Just go thin and build up slowly. 2 That leads into my second tip. Whether we are talking about MSC, paint, pencils, gloss etc. the key with doll customization is very thin layers that you build up slowly. Not all doll customization videos emphasize this enough because it’s actually super duper important for a smooth result. 3 Seal your work as you go. If you mess up you can quickly wipe it off without losing your progress. This is even more so important with using the watercolor pencils, before you add the next layer of pigment, you want to seal it with MSC every time. The color can only build up a little bit before it’s time for more MSC. Also, don’t press hard. You will likely damage your previous layers or even the doll’s vinyl. Personally I prefer acrylics because pencils are too much trouble for my patience level. 😂 4 Dilute your acrylics with water. Don’t make it overly runny, but it is important to build up slowly in order to have a nice smooth texture at the end. What I do is I start by planning the exact shape of the eyes (including lids) and then paint white as the base like you did in this video. Dilute the white down so that it takes 2 to 3 thin coats. Trust me. After that you are ready to move onto your eye colors, lids and lashes. Also dilute those paints. Because of the white base, everything else will only take 1-2 coats. 5 Tips for eyeliner/retinas/eyelashes etc. You will want to have the smallest possible detail brushes. I’m talking like the width of a nose hair lol You should be able to get a pack for super cheap online. If you want to have dimension in your eyes such as dark outer rings or sunbursts in the middle, use your darkest planned eye shade first and create the solid circle. Then towards the middle of the eye, make small brush strokes going outwards using a lighter shade. Then add the pupils on top and lastly the shines. You can also redefine that outer rim of the retina before moving onto the shines, if you’d like. It’s usually just the darkest shade of your intended eye color, rather than black. 😉 Lastly, depending on the level of realism and dimension you want to add, a shadow across the upper portion of the eye, under the eyelid. On the whites use a light grayish color. On the upper edge of the retinas, fade the same color you used on the outer ring. Technically, do this before the shines. I forgot to mention this step previously. Adding a gentle thin line above your eyes can give the impression of that important upper lid so that your doll doesn’t look like 😳 Finish with a high gloss finish on the eyes and even the lips for extra pizazz. Several coats, probably 3-4. Hopefully some of this will help you out! I’m self taught/youtube taught and have been practicing for a couple years now. I look forward to seeing your progress! Doll face ups take a lot of layers, time and patience. Keep it up ❤
Side note! Use pastels (the little brick like ones that you scrape for powder) to gently brush shading and blushing on the face for definition and reshaping.
Good video! I'm also trying customizing for the 1st time. Made same mistakes you did with lining the eyes in black. I have the next 5 days off work & plan to do some more customizing. The pencils have to be pastel ( type, not color ) kind. Not just regular. They will apply the pigment better, instead of not working, like yours did before you added water. Super Mr Clear, I think needs to be applied between coats, so it doesn't scratch off like your 1st pencil attempt with the whites on the eyes. I also have some acrylic paint pens with fine tips, but I'm going to try the pastel pencil method 1st.
Eyes are the WORST, lol. I love customizing but doing the eyes and getting them even is such a pain. As for your issue with the coloured pencils, something was off with your sealant. I knew before you even started it wasn't going to work because his face looked waaaaay too glossy. The pencils need a papery texture in order to lay down any pigment. So I'm thinking conditions may have been off when you sprayed the MSC and caused it to dry strange. It's fickle stuff sometimes. This was really cool, though! You never get to see the process and trial and error with newer customizers when it comes to repaints. I'd love to see you continue with this series. 👍🏻
From the look of it, it seems the msc was sprayed too close and the head was drenched or is this the non matte msc? This is based on my experience, coz the face looks shiny. And allow some time for every coat to dry before spraying again.
Um, that's an attempt. You have issues in trying to realize how the iris sits under the eyelid. I think you are on a path, but you are relying on the round of the iris living in the space. Nice 1, 2, 3 attempt?
The blue one turned out great!
Love that idea of video series♡

Thanks for the encouragement! 😍
Don't give up, if it would be easy, everyone would be doing it, I guess! Great video!!!
🙌🏻
He looks like a cutie reveal Ken... kind of scary nyo!
Good for you for trying, your second time looks very good!! They look like anime male eyes I love that style so you nailed it!!
🙏

I've attempted to do this as well and it's very challenging 😂 thanx for sharing!

Wow! Thank you so much for all the tips! I might have to go back and try them out! 🥰
Thanks for sharing your inaugural eye painting experience Enzo. I’ve not tried it yet, but plan to.
You can do it!
This is sooo good and funny at the same time, i really like you took time to try different technics !
Glad you liked it!!

Remember... use watercolor pencils and very sharp nyo!

I need to try again with the colored pencils. Maybe spray a few more coats of MSC. 🤪
I suggest you to try first in paper using the same materials to practice nyo!

Enzo... are you using watercolor pencils? Because with normal color pencils it doesn’t work nyo!
Yep! Those are watercolor pencils. I think the issue was probably not having enough of a base of MSC
I'm rooting for you and wishing you best luck on your art journey (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*.✧
Thank you so much!! 😊
🤗♥️🎈😍♥️🔥🎈♥️
You should practice the shape in paper first nyo!
Um, that's an attempt. You have issues in trying to realize how the iris sits under the eyelid. I think you are on a path, but you are relying on the round of the iris living in the space. Nice 1, 2, 3 attempt?
