I think there are actually 4 dimensions in play. You mention X, Y, and Z. But isn't there also a time dimension that combines with Z to create velocity information? It seems there is potential for even more expressive opportunities if time is combined with X and/or Y as well. For example, the rate at which the Y (timbre) changes could further influence the timbre.
You're completely right, that's where the functions come in. I used pressure (Z) to alter the speed of the cycle and not just volume. There's also a W and I think it's for all kinds of events. But the X, Y and Z variables are closely connected to the keyboard. We'd need to repurpose those in modular. These variables make it easier to imagine how an organic sound would respond to how we'd play it.

Ever since I saw Amon Tobin using this for his Isam album I’ve been wishing I could afford a continuum and trying to replicate the effects with modular. Maybe spending the same amount of money on the process. I forget how much the continuum is. Anyways this was a great exploration and I’m going to be watching this video over and over bunch to see if I can pick up some techniques!
I f*cked up in this video a bit. I didn't explain how I set up rings. The erbe-verb gets the DPO sine with FM applied and the infinite reverb trail goes to Rings IN. You can also try a bit of white noise going to IN. Use a regular pitch on Rings. Activate a maths cycle with gate on/off and change the cycle speed with (attenuated) pressure, which can also be an LFO. Pitch is X, timbre is Y, and pressure is Z. Patch those three variables to where they would make sense.

I've been clocking a single "green" channel off of Stages, .. and then have at various inputs, (in my case, MI modules). To this day .. I, out of disbelief, I suppose .. am not open to all the features, of those inputs, and combining them, simultaneously.

Amon was mostly using the Continuum and Symbolic Sound Kyma together to achieve those sounds. The Continuum being used as a controller for Kyma.
