I had a friend in college who created a tent by throwing sheets over his kitchen table and sleeping on the hard floor underneath. He said it was amazing and that he slept so well…he talked about it every day and tried so hard to convince our classmates to do the same lol. After long days and nights of study, I couldn’t force myself to give up my cozy bed though. ❤️
Ha no way, that is a creative way to go about it, making a little tent! Glad he loved the experience :) And of course, if the cozy bed was important to you during those long days and nights of studying, then I am glad you had that! It's lovely to know how other people try and test out things, what personal experiments people do, and then one day if one really interests you, you can try it out too, but only when it feels right for you to try :) ! Hope you have a lovely week, Crystal! xx
I love sleep! This video made me nostalgic for pre-baby days when I could prioritize my sleep hygiene and have some control over having a good night sleep. First time mom here of a wakeful toddler, it's been 15 months of fragmented sleep and mama is t i r e d. I wish I could help prepare you, fellow sleep lovers, for the shock of sleep with a newborn, but since I can't I will cross my fingers and toes for you that you have a "unicorn" baby as they call them who magically sleeps well from the beginning!!
When I was pregnant with my son, a wise woman suggested I get a little more sleep than usual as the birthday approached, to be as well rested as possible, as it's tempting to tire yourself out getting everything ready etc. It was great advice because my little one wasn't a great sleeper! I was gratefuI I didn't go into new motherhood already sleep deprived and tired. 🌴💚
I'm busy watching this with my newborn who is 3 weeks old and is not a good sleeper, our 2.5 year old still doesn't sleep through so needless to say it's been a while since either me or my husband got any quality sleep. Very very sleep deprived. Hoping your baby is a better sleeper or that you work out a plan to get some good sleep
I love this. My husband and I have been sleeping on a futon on a carpeted floor for 5 years and love it. We have a threshold of needing a certain amount of padding under us as we sleep but it’s made me so much more open to sleeping on the floor, which has sometimes been a necessity. I used to suffer with a bad back but I think the firm surface and fact we have to actually go from laying on the floor to standing up every morning is good for our bodies. I love your current bed set up and think we would do something similar if we need to be slightly raised off the floor in the future. Thanks for documenting your experience Lou. :)
That is really so wonderful to hear that your bad back has gotten better since making the change to the futon. There is something really special about taking the leap to switch up something as big as where you sleep and seeing if there may be a way that suits your needs better than your current routine--really glad to hear that this is working for you! Wishing you and your husband many more nights of great sleep on your futon! Big hugs from us xx
Congrats! Glad you liked it. I did the same many years back against my gut feeling. I’m a belly and side sleeper and hoping to force myself into this better, healthier back sleeping thing I was told. I felt horrible from day one, the agony accumulated with each night and I started to wake up from my own snoring. It changed my life completely because I loath sleeping on my back, I keep snoring ever since. At least I keep predators away when I’m sleeping outside.
I just bought a Japanese mat to place on my plywood platform bad. I slept on it for the 1st time about a week ago and I slept so soundly. People have been asking me where I got this idea and I told them I wasn't quite sure and that it just came to me. But now I'm wondering if watching your back injuey video in Spain about a year ago (actually the first video I watched of tours) planted the idea in my head. And, I've always heard it's very healthy for the body to sleep on the floor. It's like giving yourself acupressure all night long as you switch positions.
Wow, so glad to hear that you slept well so far! And how cool that our video maybe planted the idea in your head :) that's always inspiring to hear!! We hope you continue to have great sleep and find what works best for you :) big hugs from us xx
My expensive mattress is one of my favorite creature comforts, whenever I go backpacking it’s the one thing that is too heavy that I wish I could carry with me but I think it’s healthy to be put into uncomfortable situations and makes us stronger people 😁
That makes sense, it is interesting to be in new situations which help you realize and appreciate how much you like what you have at home! Hope you have a lovely Sunday and a great night's sleep on your awesome-sounding mattress later!! Big hugs from us xx
😂 I remember that mattress roll. Our bed for many years was two thick pieces of plywood under a foam mattress on the floor. It really is a good solution for a firm bed!
Lou I'm curious as to how you even sit on the floor and are able to get back up, with RA. As an RA sufferer myself, there's no way I can get back up if I manage to sit on the floor, which is a huge bummer, as I love camping and haven't been able to go since being diagnosed in 2018.
I think it’d be cool to do another video a year ish from now and talk about how you’ve adapted your sleep as parents. Like, yeah duh, a baby’s gonna crash yr good sleep data, but then what happened?!

Now you need to do a test to see how he sleeps in the bed without you. I’m not suggesting you sleep on the floor, especially while pregnant. Maybe next time you go to a hotel get two separate beds. I’m curious if sleeping with another person in the bed actually worsens sleep. Although, he gets such good sleep while co-sleeping that it doesn’t matter- I’m just curious now. Thanks guys!!!

Also, the editing skills you have are out of this world! I always enjoy watching your videos, every single one. And the fact that you’re both such beautiful, warm human beings is the cherry on top!
For some reason, I thought this was going to be like Dana's cold shower challenge, something for Lou to do in preparation for some post-baby reason. I randomly watched a video yesterday by a monk talking about sleep. Much of what he said Lou said as well. When new monks are first in training, they're given a tent and a little thin mat for sleeping. Nothing luxurious. The idea is if the sleeping arrangement is not luxurious, it will make one not want to linger in bed and become lazy.
Every time I go on holiday I can't wait to be back home and sleep in my bed. The problem is that I bought the best mattress from the whole world and to sleep somewhere else is just always bad experience. Very interesting video to see that you can sleep even on the floor and to get good sleep! Thank you for all videos you make!
Thank you, Suz, so glad you found it interesting!! We are grateful to be able to test things out and share our experiences of what works or didn't work for us along the way :) Your mattress sounds like heaven for you, really happy for you that you found one that works great! Sending you big hugs xx
I have a secondhand double sized klymit sleeping bag pad (meant for camping) that i use during travelling. It works well even on very cold flooring like concrete. Because it collapses to the same size as a towel roll, it fits in my carry on luggage. Friends think I’m bonkers but it’s either that or I’m cranky from lack of sleep and sore from the ‘mattress dip’.
Loved this video, feel like having slept on the floor in your back pocket is great! I have been surprised how tracking my sleep has changed my habits for the better. Compulsive data hound, like the numbers to improve.. makes me want to track more things. Loved the video
What does Lou use to track his sleep? A watch connected to an app on his phone? I slept on my friends bedroom floor once for 4 days and the first morning I woke up actually feeling well rested and for the first time in years, my lower back didn't hurt!! When I move out and live on my own one day, I definitely want to get a Japanese floor mat and sleep on it forever. The firmness of a yoga mat on a floor is perfect for my back.
Cool experiment, thanks for sharing. As for the sleep quality data I wonder if that is an accurate comparison. I think the data has to do with the movement the phone notices, and that would be much more on a mattress than a hard floor, right? Not an expert at all, just a thought...

I was watching the video I just thought how do these guys make money I'm very interested in how people make money I buy and sell and I'm heating engineer for the record
I don’t know if it’s my phone or the video but I see only a black screen with voices
It’s my phone! Pls ignore the comment 😬
Haha no worries! Glad it worked out in the end :)
I wish you would feature Freja more in these videos. I myself have a german shepard pup, who is 13 weeks old now, and I love to see how much bigger Freja gets. :) Maybe in the outro or just some cutscenes?
Might also be fun for you guys to look back on. :)
