Beniamino Gigli : Ingemisco (Verdi) : 1939 : New restoration

- This is the Ingemisco from the Requiem Mass composed by Giuseppe Verdi (1813 to 1901) and is a musical setting of the Catholic funeral mass. It was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni and the first performance, at the San Marco church in Milan on 22 May 1874, marked the first anniversary of Manzoni's death.
This recording was made by Beniamino Gigli in 1939 and a translation to English is as follows:-
Guilty now I pour my moaning,
All my shame with anguish owning;
Spare, o God, Thy suppliant groaning.
Through the sinful woman shriven,
Through the dying thief forgiven
thou to me a hope hast given.
Worthless are my prayers and sighing,
Yet, good Lord, in grace complying,
Rescue me from fires undying.
With Thy favoured sheep o place me,
Not among the goats abase me,
But to Thy right hand upraise me.

I devised my restoration system about five years ago and I'm trying to improve it all the time. Amongst other things I split the mono recordings into two separate left and right tracks and then give each track slightly different bass and treble properties which separates the instruments of the orchestra a little and gives a more spacious sound. It works a bit better on electric recordings like this because there is more bass and treble recorded and less noise.
I won't bore you with too much detail but you've mentioned the orchestra before and actually with the old pre 1925 acoustic recordings that's where I start. Nobody alive today knows what Caruso's voice would have sounded like recorded properly, but, we do know what the orchestra would have sounded like and, as the orchestra and voice (and noise unfortunately) are all mixed together if you can give a more natural, true to life sound to the orchestra it must do the same to the singers voice. So that's what I try to do and I know from some of your messages that you have noticed an improvement. To be honest,I spend several hours, sometimes days, on each recording so It's very satisfying and encouraging to know that a few listeners, like yourself do appreciate the difference. I hoped that if I could give the old recordings a more up-to-date sound it might appeal more to younger listeners and help to preserve the names of the great singers of the past like McCormack and Caruso.
By the way, I might have known that a man with a good old Irish name like Deery would appreciate good music. The McGrail family roots are in County Mayo, although I was born in Yorkshire.

Hi Michael thank you very very much for the explanation really fascinating!!! I am in to sound and how recordings are recorded and restored I'm the type of guy who notices when people are to far from the mike or there mike is panned just a little!!!! Etc. I am from Donegal and a singer. Not sure if you restored MCCORMAC'S il mio tesoro I have attempted to sing this but it is nothing to mcCormac's!!!!!! Yes as I said love hearing the space and yes the orchestra and singer sound alive warm not like the faint recordings which give no idea what they where really like. The experience of listening to these great singers using head voice which would never ever usually be heard was one I for one shall never forget!!!! Like being in the studio on that day absolutely magical thank you Michael!!! By the way if you are ever making an album of some of these recordings could you let us know!!!!! I am sure they would be prized!!! Joe
@@josephdeery4931 Thanks for your message Joe. We used to go to Ireland on holiday in the 1980s in the old VW camper van but didn't quite get up to Donegal unfortunately.

Thank you for uploading. However, it would be good to know some additional details about this recording: orchestra, chorus, conductor, venue etc. I know one recording featuring Gigli, with Serafin, Caniglia, Stignani and Pinza, but its date is 1937.

The recording was made in August 1939 at the Royal Opera House in Rome with the Teatro Reale Orchestra conducted by Tullio Serafin I'm fairly sure that the 1939 date is correct.
