I'd never seen a Wincher before this and was initially quite excited, only to share your disappointment by the end. That is a LOT of money for a couple of glorified jam pot seals. On seeing them, I thought someone had taken up the Setamar idea again. Our boat came fitted with a couple of old German Setamar cable driver/winches - imagine a proper revolving cleat, like the Wincher but made of solid rock, with no, now unnecessary, winch barrel below it. Banging less than half a turn of a sheet on it gives an instant, solid grip! Loved and hated in equal measure by reviewers over the years, I love mine. They can be challenging to loosen off on occasion, but I think but the trade-off is worth it. Sadly, they were bought out by Selden about twenty five years ago and quietly put to sleep. Really hard to find any gen on them any more and apparently a bit of a pig to service, but quite a weapon. I've seen shots of Bavarias and German-built folkboats with them fitted and still working beautifully. Having just bought a pair of used Barton G23s as backup, I thought I'd struck gold with your Winchers, but it turned out to be plastic. Thanks for another wonderful video and for being a constant source of inspiration and dry wit. We've ripped out half the innards of our boat and tried out a couple of hammocks based on your post-Jester Challenge recommendation - you were dead right about that. Refit coming up. Keep 'em coming (and stop going up masts when you're alone on the boat).
Yeah, we all make mistakes and that was one of mine. I can't believe the cost of self tailers. They must be made of unobtainium or something. What to do..
Great videos, my next boat will be a fulmar if there is a next boat! Re self tailing kit, obvious question, but is the slipping related to the fairy liquid you used to fit the rings in the first place?
No, I washed that off, the winches were dry. It 'feels' like the sheets are the wrong size to get just the right grip, to wedge in under the winchers properly. I think for the extortionate cost, they should just work. I'm not impressed with them. Self tailers are so so expensive
Shame the self tailing kit didn't work on your winches. It must suit some designs better than others. Curious your going to have to take the mast down to replace the rigging, why not measure it then?
nice to see you back

Thanks mate 👍 yeah I've gone right off the idea of going up the mast alone 🤣🤣 the hammock will need some dampening bungees
@@SVRoquetta Hebridean-style self-steering bungee system, check. Thanks AGAIN.
I don't think I could go up the mast. Thankfully my boat is small enough I can just take the mast down. Thanks for sharing!
Totally agree on the Barton stuff. Not self tailing - but an expensive alternative to a cleat.

Piracy 😂

Only way to get those unobtanium winches…. Take to the high seas and go after some Spanish gold! 🏴☠️
Jimmy Green supplied my new rigging, and I did it myself. No real problem for a man of your calibre!
They have been very, very good I must say. Great service and great gear 👍
Is the boat still a twister 28 . I guess not as I seen the westerly stamp on the boat. Ahhh just looked back a fullmer
Braver than me mate. I did that years ago and it still scares me

…sorry to state the obvious!
Incidentally I recently finished my hebridean wind vane - what a great bit of kit, I’m delighted with it.
@@junkrig-bootwo1049 not at all mate, all feedback is welcome 👍 yeah the Hebridean is a winner I think
Another absolutely enjoyable video. Your genoa looks like it’s setting better. How did you sort it out?
I consulted a friend, who is a talented sailmaker. then I cut 6 inches off the head and re sewed it 😂

I replaced the rigging with the mast up 👍 I've only got the forestay to do now
Wow that's a trick I'd like to learn
My experience with the Barton winchers is the same. They're useless. In any case they have nothing to do with "self-tailing".
Agreed
