This is a disability and there should be no mincing words around this. We are not “differently abled”, we are disabled. E.g. bright lights - ekdomi takate paari na, khubi koshto hoi. Seta kauke bolley lok-e bhaabe barabari nyakamo korchhi. Tar maane ei noy je andhokar e darun bhalo laage. So the ability is not “different.”. I’m simply disabled when it comes to dealing with bright lights, and many other things that come with autism, such as loud sound/noise, smells, eye-contact etc. Why? Because the neurons in our brains are firing extra so that we have more of sensory stimulation. We are able to smell more than the average neurotypical. Se karone eta seta gondho niye “pitpitani” kortei hoi. We are able to hear more - lower audible sounds. Tai puropuro sob kichhu shanto nahole ghumono combo hoi na. We stim (pa nachano, nokh khaoa, flapping hands, etc) to deal with the sensory overwhelm as well as to express our content.

It is a fantastic initiative. I am surprised how despite widespread prevalence, awareness is still so less in India, especially in Kolkata! We need lot more awareness. DSM5 redefined criteria. Now 1 in 60 kids can roughly be assessed to be somewhat on the spectrum. This was an excellent initiative!! I applaud Indrajit's effort!! You need to do a more detailed presentation Antara! Breakdown the process stepwise, not for the kid, but for the family how to first acknowledge and then provide for the child.
We have to remember that NEURODIVERSE PEOPLE ARE PERFECTLY NORMAL, THEY JUST DON'T CONFORM EASILY TO A SOCIETAL SYSTEM WE HAVE SET UP!
As for cinema, which got cited a lot, Rain Man in 1980s in Hollywood did a fantastic job. The awareness came much later in Indian cinema.

I accidentally ended up watching this podcast. This is one of the best session I have heard on this sensitive issue. The way parents explained, with so much composure , balance and simplicity was brilliant. I have seen some of his food blogs and was extremely critical of the content as I don't like that kind of eating. But this podcast and their response was so good. As a father my best wishes r with u and your kid. Surely something great is in store for your son in future. Keep up your spirit and good work my friend. Though I may still criticize your food content occasionally. Cheers Buddy!

I am a father to a 8 Yr old autistic child(with speech delay).I know how much it pains us to see our child in this condition.And no one other than parents of an autistic child can understand how stressful and painful it's for us.Social acceptance is negative for these kids.People see them as retarted and take away their normal kids from them.Its utterly painful.Their future is highly uncertain.Moreover 90% of the therapists see us as money milking machines.They are least bothered to cure the child . Pathetic!!!!

@ebong.Indrajit #ebongIndrajit. আমেরিকা থেকে দেখছি। আমার wife এখানে এদের টিচার। এদেশে autistic বলে না, কারণ শব্দটা rude লাগে। এদেশে বলা হয় special child .আমার wife যখন ক্লাসে যায় ওর সাথে ২ জন বডিগার্ড থাকে। কারণ এই বাচ্ছারা এতই স্পেশাল হয় যে মাঝে মাঝে মারধর ও করে।
আমেরিকা তে কিন্তু জন্মের আগে বলে দেবার ক্ষমতা আছে যে সে বাচ্ছা special হবে কিনা। মানে আমার মেয়ের জন্মের আগে আজ থেকে ২১ বছর আগেই সে রকম ছিল ব্যবস্থা। তবে মা বাবা কে বন্ডে সই করতে হয়। আমরা করিনি।
শুভ্রর সাথে শেষ বার কলকাতা গিয়ে কথা হয়েছিল , কিন্তু ওই টুকুই এর পরে আর হয়নি। আমি ২-৩ সপ্তহের ভেতরে সব কিছু করা সম্ভব নয় , আর শুভ্র ও বেশ কনফিডেন্ট মনে হয়েছিল। ভালো ছেলে @GypsyBong
