This is one of my favourite tunes - it suits the feel of the series perfectly and makes you think of open spaces and far away lands :)
When I tried to record this the first time, I was very disappointed - it just didn't have that epic feel that strings seem to get, so I tried to do it in a way that would suit the flute and I added all the other flutes. Then I kept on changing things until it sounded ok..
I'm playing the percussive drum parts on the bass flute and contrabass flute and have panned it left and right to get closer to the epic feel of the original.
The contrabass flute's low basslines starts midway through just to add bottom end. I love the deep sound that one normally doesn't associate with flutes :)

I love this because he looks like a type of guy to play trombone or tuba but nope, flute, and that's so cool.

You are 100% correct. If I saw this guy milling around at a practice or something, without an instrument, I would immediately just decide "yep, he's a trombone player" and that'd be the end of it. That first lead flute(couldn't name it accurately if I tried) looks almost comically small in his hands.
That said, this is EXACTLY how this theme needed to be covered. A lot of people have done it(and are doing it) with strings and pianos, and they sound fine. But doing this with a series of flutes is exactly the kind of clean simplicity that I wanted to hear from this piece.
Hats off to you WouterKellerman. To my ear, you absolutely nailed this piece, and performed it in exactly the manner I think it needed to be performed.

It's 8 years on, I've found myself back here somehow. I think your cover captures the very early sentiments in the show - the wonder, the looming danger, the melancholy for something that was lost. It gets lost in the series as time goes on, and I think to some extent it gets lost in the covers that were produced later too, which tend to be more heroic/dramatic in style. This is like a time capsule in the best way.

Watched seconds ago, and thought good heavens, this is such talent!Just looked Wouter up on Facebook and realised he's from South Africa! What a pleasant surprise! Im absolutely inspired- I started with the flute about six months ago, but had to stop because classes were getting rather expensive. I was bored and I stumbled upon this video, but I CAN'T believe this. After 10 YEARS of wondering what instrument I have at home I FINALLY know... a FIFE! I still remember the first few days I had it when I realised how hard it was to even make a tone with it at all, and another five days 'til I realised that low C was not in fact the easiest to play but the hardest (at least for me)... But wow, hahahaha, I still can't believe this. (currently about to play GoT on my fife ^_^)
