I don't know enough about Houston to know if there is a place like this.
There's The Woodlands, a suburb of Houston. Ranked #1 or #2 in every metric that makes a place a good place to live. It has a similar downtown area that includes a waterway.
I've not been since the last hurricane, but I hear they've rebuilt Kemah. It's a bit more touristy, but a great place to visit. It's right on the bay.
Galveston Island has The Strand.
Houston is significantly larger than Austin, with stuff to do everywhere. It's not as laid back as Austin, though.

The Domain is the grossest version of bland, corporate, no personality, artificial urban planning I’ve ever seen. If you want Truman Show + Stepford wives, you’ve come to the right place.
The domain is a place where people can have a nice meal or a few drinks without the hustle and bustle of downtown. It’s meant to be the polar opposite of dirty 6, so I think the blandness was intended
Do you know many places in Austin where you can comfortably walk, go to a cafe, shop, bar on the way?

The domain doesn’t even have real grass. They have to put astroturf down because they’re that lazy. They really hone in on the famous eulogy “ it looks like plastic.” The domain won’t age well. That’s all I’m saying.

These sort of mixed use deals are getting more and more popular. The idea is you live and work in and around the area and can walk almost everywhere. Healthier lifestyle.
The good ones have concierge services and regularly planned events, to create a true community feel.
Avalon in Georgia (there are many videos on RUclips) is roughly a 100 acres and is mostly a shopping experience, but has hotels, apartments, condos, and townhomes. It looks very appealing.
The Village of Providence in Huntsville, Alabama is more like a town within a city. It has a "downtown" that's mostly restaurants and small shops. There are hotels and apartments. The village has single family homes all with rear entry garages, and front porches. Not much land comes with the houses, but there are multiple parks and trails. The whole thing sits on about 500 acres. There's a school and public swimming pool as well as ball fields. It is just off a major highway.
