I love this song for a special reason: Director Imtiaz Ali has masterfully used this joyful song as a backdrop while the visual narrative shows that the heroine's dreams are shattered, she loses all her loved ones in one stroke, and once a bubbly girl loses all interest in life.
IMHO the song was deliberately composed as thumri to convey the poignancy of the scene. When I close my eyes and listen to this song, I feel profound sadness in the voice that matches the story in the movie, despite the happy words.
All in all, this song is a treat, as it is crafted by masters. Even the cinematography is sublime: As the last strains of the song fade away, a smooth long shot brings the characters from the traumatizing past to the present smoothly.

Rashed Khan, Bhimsen Joshi, Salamat Ali & Bade Ghulam Ali are few famous names in Indian Classical Music , I listen to . My personal choice is Salamat Ali, as the best. Yet I listen to you quite often and marvel at your performance and analysis. I heard your encounter with Mahesh Kale in outside concert . I did not need to count the claps of the audience to figure out whom did they like more. But I liked both.
