It’s not really true that this was his tone throughout his career. He played a dumble for the Texas Flood album and he played Super Reverbs, Deluxes, Steal String Singer, dumbles and later on in his career a 200watt Marshall for his clean tone… It didn’t really matter what he played. He always sounded like SRV

He ran more than one amp at a time live with 2 tube screamers daisy chained in front just on the edge of break up. Sometimes he tapped one or both of the screamers off when he went into his quiet totally clean phrasings, the way he alternates back and forth in the Texas Flood Live at the El Macombo performance. With the screamers on, it accounts for his simultaneous clean/dirty tone. The screamers were set just on the edge of break up as I understand his set up.

I've watched videos of him playing onstage with two Twin reverbs, one on either side of the stage, mic'ed through the PA. I always assumed that this was how the "stereo- like" sound of the leads was created.

I have to same hot plate on my 65 drri. While it's nice to crank the tubes I feel like it squashed the depth and dynamics. Maybe I don't have it setup appropriately as I only really used the bright switch and not the bass switch. Instead now I'm using a volume pedal at the end of my board and a wampler plexi drive for od. Any opinions/advice?

I had a brilliant Vibroverb and it got all those great SRV tones that is more because of the “Blackface” circuit sound than because of The Vibroverb. The smaller Bandmaster type trannies in a stock BF Vibroverb are NOT what SRV used. Courtesy of Cesar Diaz, Stevie’s amps were retrofitted with BF Bassman trannies which improved headroom, tight bottom-end at hi volume among other mods that transformed the tone Stevie got. A Deluxe Reverb, a Vibrolux Reverb, a Pro Reverb, a Super Reverb, a Vibrasonic and many other Fender amps will ALL DELIVER that basic building block of killer Fender tone that Stevie built his basic tone from. ALL OF THEM.

He played live at elmacombo with his super reverbs, his vibroverb basically went to just powering his rotating vibratone speaker. You want the true SRV tone you’re gonna need a blackface super reverb. The vibroverbs he used in his very early days and then discovered the super reverbs. Also ALL his amps were modified and far from stock so there’s that hurdle as well. He even kept using his super reverbs when he discovered the dumble amps , both were his sound at the end of his career, the vibroverb is an AWSOME amp, but not his staple amp by any means,,, waaaaaay to much miss information on RUclips. If you’re buying a vibroverb to be like Stevie make sure you do your homework first, you will need a 64-65 blackface super reverb to achieve it.

When they do get down to the nitty gritty details some unexpected(to me)things were done by Mr.Dias(RIP)
-Orange Drops with .033's in tonestack
-A 2 ohm Output tranny feeding an 8 ohm EV
-Groove tubes SS pop in rectifier
-33k vs 1 meg BF values in the phase inverter
    220mf main filter's
Not a Stock BF at all!

Great tones & playing! Slightly off-topic: try doing your “hand blacking out the camera” transition with a guitar pick (loop gaffers tape on the back so you can hold it w/o it falling out of your hands). Had another thought: someone should develop a video filter/wipe transition that has an animated pick being strummed by an invisible hand and we see 6 vertical strings vibrating. And as they vibrate from being strummed, they break apart the current frame to dissolve into the new frame/shot. Just something I thought would look cool.

Back in the mid-90's, when I was DEEP in my SRV obsession, I bought a pair of Vibroverbs to tour with, a '63 2x10 & a '64 1x15. I loved those amps, but I ended up selling them during a purge of my vintage amps. It just seemed that every time I'd pull one out of storage, it would need $500-1000 worth of maintenance. The biggest issue with the Vibroverbs, especially the 1x15 is the VOLUME. They as so loud, even for a 40w amp. I wish I still had the brownface 2x10, it was sweet sounding, easy to dial in & was very reliable on tour. They were so overlooked by collectors until around 2005 when the prices exploded. I sold both of mine for the price of 1 at today's value. Still doubled my money, though.

since i am more of a hendrix guy i like the sound of a jtm45 or even a tweed deluxe a bit more. i modded a tweed deluxe to have negative feedback like a jtm45 and it gave it a bit tighter sound and made it much more touch sensivite. the old fairytale of a non negative feedback amp beeing more touch sensitive is completely bs.. now with negative feedback i get it clean and shimmery by playing soft and distorted when digging hard.. that is kind of off-topic but important still. not many try to mod a tweed deluxe to have negative feedback. you can have it switchable as well. this vibro verb may be the best srv tone.. but for a regular guy who plays many styles maybe not worth it. but i can imagine by plugging into the texas twang you can clean up the bass quite a bit and it is perfect.

The critics put so much praise on his performances once he cleaned up. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but in my honest opinion the El mocambo performance is much better. Remember too that you’re adding some compression with the light bulb mode turned on with the thd hot plate. Fun amps. Diaz would mod these; Fender made a custom shop run of these with his mods available at the flick of a switch.
One big mod is a solid state rectifier with diodes. However you need to work with a tech on this. Solid state rectification in amps designed for tubes can change the voltage loads in the amp, which can be harder on the tubes and the transformers if done incorrectly.
You’ll have less sag and compression with the rectifier mod at higher volume levels - less fart to the bass as well.
I would personally not mod your lovely vintage example, but it may be worth finding one of those reissues. They’re great amps for SRV hounds.

I picked up a pair of ampeg PA columns today, rare 60s era S-48, in which the early ones had 4 8" alnico drivers, set up to be full range and super-sensitive... gonna give that a try with my assorted amps... a 4x8" square cab would be an awesome tone if these are what i think they are. Even the tweeters are amazing, though won't be used. Was considering using them as studio monitors, since they really seem special... but probably guitar...

Robert Cray has used the 3X10 Vibroverb (actually the Vibro King; correction prompted below) between two Matchless 1/2 stacks as his live rig for years. Robert uses the vibrato in the Vibroverb (King) alot. He gets great tones too.

It sounds so awesome but what cracks me up is the fact of Stevie being presented with an attenuator and being like "WHAAAAAA???" LOL! As a guitar player that uses an AC30 pretty dang loud quite a bit I can honestly say that I also need to give an attenuator a chance because I know I have hearing loss already. My buddy told me the other day that it's not fair that my wife has to live with me while I'm making videos because she has to almost be deaf as well. I was like "well guitar is what attracted me to her in the first place so she kinda had it coming". LOL!

40 watts capability for the speaker is too little for the power of the amp. If the E130 has higher watt capability that may be why it clears up the flubbing or farting out on the low end. A 40 watt speaker doesn't sound right for this amp IMHO.
