    Civivi's new folding fillet knife is doing something that should be impossible: fitting a really long blade into a normal sized handle. But it turns out that people have been trying to make folding knives with longer blades for a *really* long time, and having to invent weird and brilliant ways of pulling it off. Along the way we'll check out knives by Benchmade, CRKT, and many others!
    You can find the Shawka at:

      United States Army Air Force contacted for the folding machetes for B-2/B-4 bailout kits . Never issued individually.

      I have a great interest in knives, having collected them for decades. Nevertheless, this video was a lot more interesting than I expected it was going to be. That is really saying something when I was already expecting something good.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 months ago +2

      @wendyanderson3887 Hey! Thanks for the comment. Do you know where I can find documentation of that contract?
      I'm not saying you're wrong -- I've heard that many times, and indeed seen photographs of B-2 bailout kits that include them. But I've never been able to find any documentation that the US Air Force actually contracted to have the machetes produced or included them in the kits as part of a standard issue. I cannot find the commission, spec, or blueprint you can typically find on contract pieces like that.
      Instead, I've found multiple sources claiming that the B-2/B-4 jungle survival kits were instead issued with the No. 18 style bowie knife, and that some pilots swapped out the bowie for the machete based on the local conditions they were going to be in.
      Again, if you have seen documentation of the claim these were part of the standard configuration of those kits, I would genuinely really love to see it!

      @Nvr4getGachi 2 months ago +12

      honestly having used liner lock (regular blade size) folding knives for cooking and sometimes butchering and seeing this design, im pretty sure it wouldnt be that bad! the only parts i'd be concerned about when its gunky slippery and dirty are the liner lock itself, the frame lock toggle on the spine of the handle and the handle extension itself since you need to open it up to refold the knife, but you could probably manage just fine if you clean the knife first when its open, then slide out the handle, clean anything left inside and then fold the blade. is it more cumbersome, time consuming and overall annoying? probably yeah, but the upside is the folding compact package the whole thing offers

      Facts

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 months ago +30

      Yeah, folding filet knives -- or folding knives in general for processing food -- adds a new layer of cleaning. That's the trade off you're making for portability. Luckily, all of the materials here are pretty rust proof -- the handles are aluminum, the hardware stainless steel, the bearings ceramic with a brass cage -- so you could pretty safely rinse it all out in a stream or under running water. But you're still absolutely right, there's more opportunity to get gunk into little nooks and crannies on anything that folds!

    Speaking of folding chef knives as you mentioned near the end, Civivi actually have that, too. Check out the Civivi Hid. It's not quite a full sized chef knife, but is infinitely better for food prep than using a standard tiny pocket knife. I'd like to hear what you think of it.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 months ago +8

      Ooo, yeah, good recommendation! While that one still falls into the "bigger blade means a bigger handle" category, they balanced it well so that you get quite a lot of useful blade and a handle that's bigger but not yet unwieldy. And the way the handle angles upward from the blade edge to give your fingers room is a huge part of why that'd be a great food prep knife! I've never handled those, but just looking at its design, I can definitely see how it's aligned well with food prep!

    3:25 they probably use it to navigate dense brush after landing in the middle of nowhere.. you know.. what machetes were designed to do.

      Reasonable assumption, yes. There's a *lot* of lore around these with people making all sorts of wild claims, but I do appreciate the rational, grounded approach. 😝

      @KnifeNerdery The cutting shroud lines thing sounds like an urban legend to me. Get some 550 cord and cut it. A machete's edge, and the way you'd employ one is all wrong for cutting parachute cord, even the stuff from WWII.

    those folding machetes where 100% being used by the army , thy were standard issued in the survival kit .
    there is a well know youtube channel about emr and old survival kits who has a video about the kit whit the machete in it .

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  Month ago

      I don't doubt at all that they were used by people in the military. I've heard that many times, and indeed seen photographs of B-2 bailout kits that contained them. But l've never been able to find any documentation that the US Air Force actually contracted to have the machetes produced or included them in the kits as part of a standard issue. I cannot find the commission, spec, or blueprint you can typically easily find on contract pieces like that. Instead, I've found multiple sources claiming that the B-2/B-4 jungle survival kits were instead issued with the No. 18 style bowie knife, and that some pilots swapped out the bowie for the machete based on the local conditions they were going to be in. There's also plenty of stories of pilots swapping out the bowie with a locally made khukri for the same reason.
      Again, if you have seen documentation of the claim these were part of the standard configuration of those kits, I would genuinely really love to see it!
