I honestly think this is fine, do what you want with Gould's music, but putting it on his official channel was a mistake I think. It's not his music, and we don't know if he would have liked it or wanted it associated with his name. Just seems disrespectful imo

This channel is run by GG's estate so in order to have these remixes put on this channel, his estate would have given permission to the artists. If you don't like this work, tell it to his estate

I usually don't listen to this type of music, but I'll save my judgements until the album comes out. If I like it then I'll love it, if I hate it then I'll want to burn it to hell. We'll see what happens.

Shameful. Glenn would likely have appreciated the technological advancements. However, the meaningless, random, uninformed manner in which samples of Gould's interpretations seem to be hijacked run counter to Gould's ideals of intelligent listeners/interpreters. The coarse language used is also very disappointing. I thought the official channel was above this kind of content. Please just provide us archived, difficult to access content. Please!

    • @jimmyissah

This channel isn’t above or below anything. It’s about keeping Gould’s interpretations alive . This is only one way to do it. And it’s also a way for many different people to appreciate the timeless beauty and power of classical music.

If you consider the word “ass” an example of coarse language, your experience surveying the internet, I’d imagine, is a pitiful one. Words are words. It would do you better if you didn’t add true meaning to them; letting them offend you.

@@dondondon786 This is certainly true! However, things had been improving via the official channel. Stunts, such as this current endeavour, are alienating their base - those of us who still subscribe for the occasional nugget of GG gold.

@@adrianoseresi3525 I am not easily offended. However, a channel that officially adopts the name of Glenn Gould would be well-advised to use language and content befitting the decorum of their channel's namesake.

Glenn Gould was a perfectionist! He spent many years too perfect the recordings he did. If it ain't broken don't fix it some folks say. Well these guys broke it really bad. This is really bad and a shame. These persons that are doing this are very disrespectful against Glenn Gould's legacy and his recordings he spent so long time too perfect. Do you realise how much work he put in those recordings? Only the two books of the Well Tempered Klavier is about four hours. This is cruelly, disturbing and disrespectful against Glenn Gould.

Anyone else wondering if this project has something to do with the insane viral success of Hamilton?
Using hip hop as a way of bridging old traditions and characters with the ‘new’ sound?
If so, I feel confident in saying that this project will not go ‘viral’ the way GG’s first recoding of The Goldberg Variations did way back in 1955. And that sensational debut was without social media of any kind other than word of mouth and radio!

As a person who samples music the approach these guys are taking is pretty interesting. Usually you don't really credit the artist your sampling in the song, they are giving him all the credit.

Sexy Bach - These young artists are giving GG all the credit because they are doing this under the auspices of the GG Foundation, apparently. That’s the trade off; they get this exposure for their project, but they have to frame it by deferring to Gould’s legacy.
The fact that they appear to know very little about GG, or JS Bach for that matter, doesn’t make me feel confident about the final product.

    • @division8871

@@jjmckenna That seems to be the point. They are learning about GG and Bach through a scope they could understand. Usually I become a fan of the artist I'm sampling and through sampling they teach me something about music I didn't know before.

I think your approach to Bach from a Gould perspective is somewaht weak. I feel he liked more the contrapunctual nature of his compositions than merely the harmonic one, hence, using just the bass is weird. If you want to use only the bass, i´d recommend you to use cantatas or chorales that he played with organs. Anyways, it´s looking nice

In creating this album, this team/the Gould Estate are trying to do something good here. Everyone in the comments seem to think they are gatekeepers of Gould's music. Let them create---this is in every essence something Gould would probably find fascinating--As confirmed by an actual friend of Gould. Do not confuse a couple of jokes with dishonour. Maybe laugh a little perhaps. This has been a project that spanned many years. The respect for Gould is there or else they wouldn't be doing this. They are making light of the fact that from the day they were given the opportunity to create, Gould's "fans" went on attack mode. They know they are UNINVITED GUESTS in the classical community but guess what? A generation of people who would have never known about Glenn Gould may actually take notice. Not a bad thing...unless you all want to keep Gould's talent your little secret. I pre-saved AND i watched a lot of content on this channel as a result.

Take that purists! I love the samples I heard here, but there’s a risk of “Hooked On Classics” if not conceived with original artistry & intellect, not just “cool”. Ideally, the result will be worthy of Glenn’s gifts, right? That’s what we’re listening for, something aspirational and inspirational, like Glenn himself. Good Luck folks.

For all of the civility and sophistication the Western World has chosen to associate with “classical” music, fans of it do appear to wax rabid at any hint of controversy. Do they know that Bach didn’t have a radio in his living room? And that what today we call “classical” music was effectively pop music at the time when it was composed. They didn’t have hit singles but there was a brisk trade in sheet music. Write a good piece and as soon as word of it got ‘round, everyone with the means wanted their own copy. It has always paid to be popular.…

I believe only around 7% of the population (mostly the aristocracy) in Vienna supported Mozart's career during his life...
The conception that classical music was the pop music of its day is not very accurate since that kind of music wasn't easily afforded by most of the population until the 20th century.

  • @foxjacket

"Take that purists" - yup my thoughts exactly. All the naysayers here just don't like the thought of touching GG's original recordings at all. That's cool, then unsubscribe. No one will miss you. I'm all for remixing classical music if it's done well, and the track near the end was sounding good. Just came here from listening to Van Halen's guitar solo on Eruption (RIP). Electric guitar is not my thing at all, but you can definitely hear the classical elements in there. And LOL at "this Bach guy" - he's only like the Shakespeare of Baroque music and set the foundation for all of classical music (as recognized now - after he died he was forgotten and Mendelssohn resurrected his music). Glad you guys are learning 😂
