Daaamn that's a tough loss! Tough to know what to do in the split sec, been there before! Look into using aussie reels. They're super simple and I've never had one lock up on me. Have em on all my guns and belt! 🤙🤙
Most very experienced people have had the most unlikely failures of gear, or unique conditions that cause a failure situation. Especially when in extreme conditions or situations where there’s not much room for error. You can explain it to less experienced people, but it takes years to gain that knowledge. It’s just really weird how the smallest component failure can cause catastrophic problems. I can relate ,, with failures of gear in extreme cold conditions . Especially a lot of modern novelty materials or “ Aerospace”, BS …there’s a solid reason professionals keep gear as simple and proven as possible. Excellent video! Much to be learned.
Great stuff, I Iove watching your vid's it makes my old heart sing as I cannot venture into the deep anymore. I know it hurts to lose your gear, but hey, you live to do it all again. Cheers
Have you considered using mono for the leader? Its very common here in Southern Cal. Stiffer and less likely to muzzle wrap, though it can still happen.
Mono cuts very easily on the rig legs. The dyneema has been great but occasionally if the shooting line is too slack air it’s not wrapped super clean it can tangle.. Totally hear on the moon and stiffness- I love that about it but just doesn’t work around the rigs in our experience.
Also you should definitely look into the European reels for guns like the free spool reels i have one and ive never had that happen since i switched over to it from regular reels
I have one on my pathos 120, & love it! It’s an MVD I believe - as soon as it gets tugged it releases. Worked great on a permit I speared on a deeper dive last year.. I agree, if I find myself with a fish pulling hard, I just want it to let it since usually I’m trying to swim up and breathe
@@BradenSherron yea for sure I have one of the mvd ones there awsome reels u should definitely go down with a tank what type of barrel did u have on that gun I've been looking for that barrel to build a gun with it
#1... Great video, as always. #2... Just like on a roof... Never chase something running away from you. It isn't worth your body or your life. Thoughts on going back with scuba and searching for it? Maybe it got wrapped like you feared the big Cabrera would do, fish pulls the spear and your gun is left there waiting on you?
Really appreciate it! As far as I could see it wasn’t caight anywhere shallower than 150 feet.. going that deep and likely into the murk just wouldn’t be worth it I’d say.. also without scuba on board it would’ve had to be a different day to search, and unfortunately we had a string of rough weather shortly after.
What a roller coaster. Big fish, it's gone and it took the gun, it's back, it's gone again...I think you made the right decision on dropping it. The only way to know the decision wasn't right is if you don't come back.
I use a 3 foot bungee between my gun and belt reel, works well. Wouldn't have helped in that situ though. Surprised your slip tip wire doesn't damage your roller/rubber , don't need it all tucked through like that. Great footage as always.
The way the roller muzzles are the only way I can keep the sliptip to stay on is to tightly tuck it through the bands like I do! I notice the tips stay on much easier with standard muzzles.
i call this this biggest W of the year... you did everything to a textbook finish. The outcome could have been deadly. you can replace a gun but not a life.
Yo should do a video with scuba gear trying to find the “2000$ mistake”! Maybe you will be lucky and find it nearby, don’t thing that snapper could’ve gotten that far! It’s probably hanging nearby!
I wish, thatd be cool. Unfortunately we weren't able to make it out soon after and I bet it's long gone by now.. Something definitely ate the fish and with all the current I imagine its been swept around. Even if it didn't it's down 170 plus in the murk somewhere lol
@@BradenSherron damn!!! That’s unfortunate. But be positive, it was better losing the speargun than your life! You will get another one soon, it sucks but when it’s meant to be it’s meant to be! I’m going to try and take an apnea course so I can be safer and have more knowledge while diving, I’m only 17 lasting probably 1:25 like max I’ve mostly taught everything myself. Wish I can be an awesome diver like you! Cheers, nice dives.
Hey Braden, greetings from South Africa. Losing your gun and belt reel in one shot blows 😭. If you have some time look up the Rob Allen spearfishing channel here on youtube and search for the Muzzle Wraps and Reels - 2023 video. He's got some useful tips on what to do in case of a muzzle wrap scenario as well as a lot of other useful info. Hope it helps man and may you never end up losing gear again. Stay cool and keep up the good work with your channel.
I’ve never had a muzzle wrap in my life. Not sure what I’m doing right but I’m not changing. The muzzle on rollers seems very complex. Idk I like traditional guns myself. I think banded right they are almost as good and they are heaps cheaper. I shoot large fish with my 105 and 2 14mm bands and I string fish that I have no business stringing. That’s why I think the setup at least rivals a roller. I agree with the Greek reels, I use a meandros reel and it’s bullet proof as far as I’m concerned. You do need to always wind the line in good and taught though.
Sucks you lost your gun. I love my Koah Fatback (hiploader) and I really really love my Daryl Wong hybrid (chestloader). They’re both simpler than the double roller setup and kill everything we shoot in Alabama waters that are almost identical to the rigs and fish you shoot in Texas. They’re both awesome to deal with. John at Koah and Daryl Wong will work with you to get the exact gun you need. And Daryl let’s you pick your colors if you want it painted. Good luck and keep the videos coming.
Do you all ever do any barnacle scraping? We would not only scrape barnacles off the rig, we would also gather a giant bag of barnacles, smash them up with a hammer or a wrench, mix in some cheap tuna and pour that down to the next level. Woukd work great sometimes, sometimes it attracted too many fish and you couldn't see anything.
Question: Why not shoot with a float instead of the reel? It would give fish a harder time getting to those in-accessible spots, and help avoid that kind of sticky situation as well.
Biggest reason has been because it also prevents us divers from accessing areas in the rig as well. With decent current most days the line gets hung up all over the place, preventing swimming around or diving to depth. Your'e right on though about a float being ideal though for preventing the fish from doing that, theres the no doubt. Just a matter of getting around and diving with the line. . Diving outside the rig on the down current side is the best option, put it does prevent swimming through and around to where fish could be. with all that said I do have some ideas though I will try...
You made the right decision not shooting that cub. If it had given you another two seconds of broad side and you could've gotten closer, I'm sure you would've taken the shot. But you didn't have a clear stone shot, so it was wise and good not to risk it. Now you can go back another day and maybe get it when it's bigger. PS sorry about your gun :(
I wouldn't say a mistake but unfortunate malfunction. I've had a few friends lose their gun w similar entanglement. Better to drop the gun. Better for your buddy to make sure you don't blackout.
@@BradenSherron love the content. Stay alive. Tampa area we lose a diver every other year or so. I've dropped my gun multiple times but recovered(50ft) range. Great videos Stay safe!

Sorry about your gun. I know so many people that habe had something similar happen to them. Although for a lot of them, they forgot they weren't using their gun that had a connection point like a lanyard and think they have the fish on a reel, but they don't have their reel gun. They let their gun go and forget that the gun isn't connected to anything. So the fish takes off and they let the gun go and realize too late...that fish isn't connected to anything,
You poor bastard to have both line jam on your gun then your belt reel jam up mate my heart goes out to you go back with a tank and try to retrieve your gun its worth a try never know you luck in the big city it could be tied up again you have both your reel and your gun the reel could be tied up high and your gun floats id give it a go shoot straight and again sorry for your loss of a top roller gun Grumpy
Unfortunately we had a rough spell shortly after the trip and couldn’t make it out in time to even consider it. With water that deep as well I could see it wasn’t hung up any shallower than 150…
what only 150 deep with your murman breath holding whats 150 ft to you LOL one day will be a lucky score for someone either on a water front or floating somewhere shoot straight Grumpy@@BradenSherron
The best thing is, to ensure safety and result achieved, you ought to have oxygen tank on standby. It's always the best necessity for any underwater hobby.
After this trip and a video yet to come out I decided I’m gonna try it, however using a floatline in and around the rig is a huge hinderance. With the current it’s really limiting on where and how you can dive. Really have to sit in the down current side and just stay in the outside. But I’ve got some plans..
Well once I clipped on the belt reel cutting the line would’ve had the same result to losing the gun.. hindsight is 2020. It would have been nice if my dive buddy could get to the gun in time, however he was most concerned on making sure I made it to the surface without blacking out. The gun and gear was far beneath him to try to even attempt at the rate it was sinking, and if he did go after it I’d be unwatched at the surface for a good period.
