    Kevin Richards shows the three different vocal fold sounds to sing mixed or head voice notes. These 3 vocal cord configurations require different degrees of breath support and glottal compression. The demonstration combines the ideas of light cord closure from Speech Level Singing and chest voice , modal voice, chiaroscurro belt sounds from Bel Canto classical techniques.

    Thanks. been singing for 35 years, actively again for the past 3. Took some classical technique in my youth.I sing folk, hard rock,everything. The freedom comes while I'm actually singing, I get better & more relaxed as I go-singing makes my throat feel better. have issues with swollen lymph nodes; I feel closed off by the back of my tongue. when it doesn't work I'm trying to stay loud and pushing through with chest voice, when it's "free" the sound goes up into my 3rd eye cavity & it rings.

  • @TotalSinging
    @TotalSinging  11 лет назад

    my answer would depend on several things: when is this "freedom occurring - during songs or vocalizing?", "how long have you been singing or at least how long have you been trying to sing better?" and "what is different between when it's relaxed and open and when it shuts off - what changes physically and mentally?"

  • @TotalSinging
    @TotalSinging  11 лет назад

    Yes, as you ascend into the upper resonances you need to open your mouth so that the upper resonators can activate (mainly the hard palate and back end of the sinus cavity); this way the formants or upper partials of the frequencies (the things that make the sound "ring") can tune to their proper place in the vocal tract. I know that sounds complicated but it really isn't in practice.
    Too many singers try to access head resonance with a closed mouth and wonder why they get stuck or break.

    Tenelli's videos are great. That drink the sound idea worked like magic for me.
    I find I can never have it all clicking at the same time when it comes to having Steve Perry sound and a Bon Jovi sound. I can never say I've done my best at both on the same day. I know there are many athletic endeavors that say you should never train two particular qualities at once. Like never try to be endurance and strength simultaneously, and never practice pistol and rifle shooting at the same time.

  • @TotalSinging
    @TotalSinging  11 лет назад

    Yes, dropping the larynx and the back of the tongue adds "depth" to the sound. It lengthens the vocal tract in a vertical fashion. A good way to think about it is imagine drinking the sound back in as you exhale out; this opens the throat and allows some lower resonance to bleed onto your upper resonance creating a more balanced or rounder tone.

  • @TotalSinging
    @TotalSinging  11 лет назад

    its just one of the ways to produce a distorted noise (with or without pitch). There is false cord screams. glottal compression screams and soft palate trilling.

    I cover mix but beling in mix is an advanced technique. BTC is a very generalized vocal course for intermediate singers looking to expand their range and develop an overall better balanced sound.

    That would depend on how far you can sing in chest resonance now. If you can barely sing to a middle C than I would say yes you need to strengthen your chest register to at least and F above middle C before mixing.

  • @TotalSinging
    @TotalSinging  11 лет назад +1

    "Pulling chest" is not dangerous but it is VERY wrong and you will eventually hit a wall with it.
    Some singers however can be confused by their sound and may think they're "pulling chest" when they actually just mixing on the heavy side (fold configuration #3 in this video).

    Woah thank you so much, Kevin! I used to think the only way to reach those notes was to belt with the my chest too. Thank you for clarifying and demonstrating :) It really helps to know this and see it being done :)

    open throat - relaxed and balanced larynx (not rigid and unmoving)

  • @TotalSinging
    @TotalSinging  11 лет назад

    The CVT method is the same approach - they just use different ways to describe it - curbing, overdrive, metallic/non-metallic etc.
    The CVT method is actually far from "Complete" and gets some stuff wrong - specifically about registrations and placement.

    Not really, it is possible but typically it would be too heavy to sing a C5 in the 3rd stage. Normally you'd want to sing it with the 2nd stage of focus.

    "Masking" would not produce that bottom-heavy sound of the third example. "Masking" is a technique to achieve a neutral or well balanced tone of dark and light tonality.
    "Masking" is just generally allowing the sound to resonate more off the hard palate and sinus cavity. The 3rd example is more throaty.

    I am 6'0" myself.
    Two things
    1. Geoff Tate is tall not short.
    2. Shorter men do not necessarily have shorter vocal cords. I have known some very tall guys with small, high voices.
    The people you mention just happen to have high baritone or tenor voices. There is no correlation between height or stature and the highness or lowness or your voice.

    Ok, I'm thirteen and already have developed a very Baritone/bass type of voice. I want to be able to hit higher notes. First of all I can only have a strong head voice when I do a slide from chest to head, but I can not start strong on my head voice it sounds somewhat crackly and falsetto sounding. Secondly I can't figure out my mixed. Whenever I try to go into my "mixed voice" my voice sounds crackly and sounds like it goes in and out of head to chest. Please help! Thanks!

    I bought vocal fire a few weeks ago. I'm loving it. I didn't realize how effective warming up was until i did it. I have about a 45 minute drive to work everyday so I do the program in the morning on the way in and then again on the way home. is that too much? is there a "Too much" when warming up? When would you say is the best time of day to do the program? Any advice on what to eat/drink? I feel like i might be a little too anxious about improving my singing voice and range. when practicing everyday, 45 to 60 minutes each time, how long before i might be able to move onto something more advanced? Again...vocal fire is awesome.

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging  10 лет назад +3

      Hello, lots of questions. Warm ups are OK early in the morning as long as you don't try to do too much. The voice works better about 4 hours after you wake. Too much warm up? Not really unless you're warming up for an hour and then singing for 3 hours right afterward.
      Food/Drink - anything with caffeine or alcohol dehydrates so in only moderation. Be sure to balance it with plenty of room temp. water. Foods to avoid on heavy/moderate vocal days: dairy products and anything acidic. Your voice LOVES juice for hydration but stay away from orange/grapefruit juice - apple, grape are best. You can also eat watery fruit and veggies for hydration like apples, celery, mango, strawberries, any grape. I hope that helps.

    Helpful video, thank you sir. Does your larynx rise at all when singing that high? I know it's supposed to stay neutral for the most part, but does it move up a tiny bit? I notice mine rises a small amount but I just wanted to know if it's normal or it should just stay in the same exact place as C4 when going to say C5.

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging  9 лет назад

      ***** Yes, a little movement is perfectly naturally. Your larynx does that when you speak, so its OK when you sing. You just don't want huge movements up or down.

    I have an okay range for a 16 year old , Im a tenor and I can hit all notes that a tenor can . I think ive found my mixed voice but I found this weird voice that starts off as a bass note and I add some kind of weird falsetto into it and it sounds like a normal singing voice . I have no idea what im doing but thats what I use to hit high notes . I need to fix my mixing , i end chest and start this weird voice at around middle C , and sometimes those high notes sound a bit girly . Any help ?

    Hi Kevin.. I have not been singing or training for some months, and now I can't connect my chord when going up,, my voice just cracks and wants to go to falsetto, eventhough I try to move the resonance up and take the weight of.. I am a bass baritone and my talking pitch is similar to yours.. The muscle coordination or use of the muscles involved takes time to rediscover. I can understand why placidio domingo who is more a baritone voice had to train a lot to sing tenor

How will I sound chesty on my low notes up to my high notes?

    Thanks for the video. When you belt you said you lean more to the chest resonance instead of head on the third example. I like it better because it has more power. How does it feel different 'resonance' wise doing it this way? Can you feel resonance in the mask at all or is it all in the throat/hard palate/mouth. Thanks again I appreciate your videos.

    I can get up to G4 with that light voice in chest, but I can't get above Gb4 with the medium or high volume/fold. I have a theory (based on guys who are short in stature and have high voices like Steve Perry, John Bon Jovi, Bono, Peter Cetera, Geoff Tate) and the Foreigner guy), that maybe shorter guys have shorter vocal chords which can make higher notes in chest than I can being 6'1". When I sing Bon Jovi in chest it kills my voice, but I can do Journey in mix. May I ask what your height is?

    Hi Kevin. Your videos are very educative. I am somewhere between a baritone and tenor. I have a rich sound in the low register, But I find that I am scooping into my Ab and A, probably because I am trying to attain the same rich sound up there. Any Advice on how I can reach those notes without scooping?

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging  8 лет назад

      I was a "scooper" at one time myself. My first teacher used to say to me "scoops are for ice cream not for singing notes!". The way I got out of out was to practice just singing the notes by themselves starting a few notes below my "target" notes.
      Lets use your example of Ab and A. Start singing single notes around F. See if you can sing the note straight - head on - no scoop. Pay attention to the way you're attacking the note. Don't change what you're doing as you go to F#, G, Ab and A. See if you can attack the notes in the same way you did the lower notes. You may need to tweak a little as you go up but not much.

    I can sing "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi, and some Journey songs, but only after I've warmed up for a long time, otherwise I crack, and strain too much. Will my chest voice eventually get more comfortable doing really high notes, or will I forever have to keep warming up before I can hit all the notes? Thanks for all the help!

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging  9 лет назад

      +Ken Stevens - depends what you mean by "chest voice" because Journey is not really sung in the typical male "chest voice".

    • @kenstevens7343
      @kenstevens7343 9 лет назад

      I just meant my chest register, not a mix or head register. I never really knew what Steve Perry did. I always have to use a mix for songs like Seperate Ways, but when I am very warmed up, I can belt some of the high notes, but I get so tired. Sorry if I sound confused. I hear so many different terms from everyone all the time that contradict one another. I do have a good understanding of my voice though.
      Anyways, I was just asking if eventually I won't have to warm up so much just to be able to sing the notes that are really hard for me right now. I've been singing for about 2 years now. Would it be like weight lifting, where the weights, or notes, get easier to reach, or will I forever need to warm up to go my highest? Thanks for replying. ☺

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging  9 лет назад

      Ken Stevens
      Its a life time of warming up. The voice isn't like any other kind of conditioning because you're working muscles as well as acoustics, flow dynamics etc.
      You get tired because you're belting instead of singing in the proper resonance. Two years of singing is NOTHING. You're still considered a beginner until about 5 years of training.

    • @kenstevens7343
      @kenstevens7343 9 лет назад

      +Kevin Richards Rock the Stage NYC Thanks again for your insight. Although I have only be seriously training for 2 years, I am very happy with my progress so far, and I don't plan to ever stop singing. I do however want to take my experience to a higher level. I was considering a vocal coach, but it can be pricey. I understand you have a course available. I will check it out. Another teacher on here, Robert Lente, I gather a buddy of yours, has promising skills as well. My biggest issue was practicing everyday in my apartment, but now I'm in a house, so I'm ready to belt away, with the right course of action that is.

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging  10 лет назад

      Not chest resonance itself, but a chesty mix can be extended to B4-C5 - but it takes years.

    • @Firebolt773
      @Firebolt773 10 лет назад

      What about Ken tamplin? he claims his program is able to stretch chest voice

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging  10 лет назад

      You CANNOT and I repeat CANNOT stretch chest/throat resonance. The simple acoustical science of resonance and frequency vibration says so. What you can stretch is a chesty sounding mix.
      Ken claims a lot - be wary of such people. Not that he isn't an amazing singer but be wary of people who make outrageous claims like "If I can't teach it, it can't be done". Effective teachers also need humility and statements like that are not humble.

    • @Firebolt773
      @Firebolt773 10 лет назад

      Okay thanks! :) Can you get a chesty mix to sound exactly like chest voice? Is that how female singers can get up to like a G5 sounding chesty? Is it possible for them to get up to a G5 using chest?
      I think I have mixed voice but it is really short and not completely connected well to my head or chest voice. How do you stretch a mixed/chest voice?

    • @TotalSinging
      @TotalSinging  10 лет назад

      No, a G5 even for women is a mixed belt - a mix of chest & head resonances.
      How to stretch it ? Through a process of learning and strengthening the voice.
      There is no short answer to that question. It takes a lot of practice and probably a full year of training.
