I’d love to have the castle but $400 is too rich for my blood. I splurged on this one. And then someone bought me Snow White’s Cottage. ❤
I looove the tax collector (A nice deviation from real life). Anyhow, he reminds me very much of the Sheriff of Nottingham, from Robin Hood, especially since they both feature purple clothing and both are meant to represent people in a position of power. The beard and long hair on the mini figure and the choice of Wolf as animal for the Sheriff of Nottingham supports this.
I think that is more coincidence then anything. Or just a subtle nod from the designers. Or a lego designer originally designed the look for the Disney cmf line and like the look so much that he kept it for this set.
Was about to order it because I loved my medieval castle, but saw it in person at the Lego store and it was super underwhelming especially closed up, I think the colors were also way too muted.
I think it would’ve been much better as a sort of city theme, with the buildings being standalone and not mixed together like that…
so, this video was magnificent. i am so happy that lego medieval is making a comeback.
The one thing i wish was some sheep pigs or chicken. Also a horse for the tax collector, i am exsitedt to see what people do with him

I am still holding out hope for a "city" village line next year if the space theme does well enough (which it should, I've never seen lego city sets out of stock on their first month after christmas before). Hope they bring a few small decent sets with animals so you can build some "herds".
Stickers should bother you in a set this price. I get that you're an aggressively positive individual in the bulk of your reviews (and in fact I haven't seen a negative one yet) but I can't see how a set costing more than $100 usd having stickers is at all okay.
Watch my review about the scary island gwp I ripped into that one😂. But yes stickers do bother me. But when I looked into it I understand why Lego doesn’t make all these parts printed. Trust me I wish they were printed. But Lego isn’t going to change that. So there is not point in condemning the whole set because of the stickers
I've not seen anyone comment on it, but I'm pretty sure the face from the goat herder cmf is an update of the classic moustache and stubble face used on many old castle and pirate figures, not least the old wolfpack bandit!
It definitely is a similar vibe!
It feels nice that I now own a genuine Lego goat through the Lego CMF series, but I also have 20 or so Chinese fake lego goats that I bought for like 50 cents per piece so I can have a whole herd of goats.
I see they added the scape goat. Usually is the black sheep in the family. ;)

I love this review so much because it perfectly showcases both sides of this set. Yeah, many of us would’ve loved some minor changes like more animals, or maybe a different color pallet but for what we get the set is amazing. I feel that this has been scratching an itch that many castle fans have had for a long time with the presence of normal peasant life that’s usually absent from the more army focused sets, meaning now all we need is cheaper sets too😂
Also, I love the production here, especially the music, so pls credit some of the songs in the description, they’re great and I’m not able to content ID them😢

really good set. I agree on all topics, except the stickers. The letters and building signs should have been prints. the rest make sense as stickers.

@@BrickingUpBrad just imagine the many uses they could have had for the dragon, lion, and nondescript bird letters - for harry potter alone it could have been huge, or any disney princess set. Same for the shop signs, every set from friends, to modular buildings to dreams could have used those (and ideas too ) .

Thank you! I defiantly do consider them animals. My brain just glossed over them because they are so small and I was trying to focus on so many details in this set. But yes if you count those there are a total of 6 animals in the set!
@BrickingUpBrad gotta count all we can. I for one would have loved more animals like cows, horses etc. but when you only focus on stuff like that you forget about the smaller animals that tend to give sets a lot more life besides just plopping in a cow or pig

Technically there are no less than 7 animals in this set: goat, cat, frog, squirrel, bird, bat and bees.

@@BrickingUpBrad I have played dnd once and enjoyed it. I am a castle and lord of the rings fan and this dnd set is a good mix of both but I do want to add a village next to my castle.

I’ve been collecting Lego sets since the late 80s, early 90s. Love everything about this set except for the stickers. Black falcon, crusader, forestmen, black knights, and wolf pack sets didn’t have a single sticker. Even Lion knights castle and remade Galaxy explorer didn’t have any. Great sets shouldn’t have stickers.
Yeah but lion knights castle had very few new parts. I agree stickers arnt great but what are we going to do.
But also think about how many new printed parts they came out with back then and how much they reused those printed parts. Like they didn’t need to make 50 new printed parts every time a set came out.
Brad got it from day one, so far built book one. Enjoy the build so far. Already have more animals to add including cmf goathearder x3 and of course the warning about about Basil, I have him on horse with old barding, brilliant!!

In my opinion, this set was made to
complement of the castle of the lion knights, it looks great next to it, even the animals are quite enough if you add those from the big castle. I have a large display case and have them displayed together, they look perfect together and complement each other. as for the price, it is fully justified as a ratio of the number of parts and minifigures. However, I do agree that you should have the Lion Knight Castle first

They should of done dark brown for the tree which is the sweet spot between brown and black

I feel like a small portion of Lego fans that get this care about the box mostly folks who won't even build it rather resell . I don't know anyway it has good parts that's what I carea about anyway
I’m not planning on reselling, box art is just part of the experience. It’s basically advertising for the set. And this box art is awful advertising in my opinion. I’m reviewing this set and talking about what I like and don’t like about it, and I’m going to talk about all aspects of it so of course I’m going to mention the box art.
@@BrickingUpBrad I distinctly and fondly remember the imaginative boxes, books, and manuals of the 90s. Yes its nostalgia, but it's nostalgic precisely because of those inaginative images.

Well, i have made the the set... The build was ok, the one i liked the most is the goat house... Perfect buil. The woodshop i dont like... But the small white house is wow... Im going to copy it to make it as one house. The inn is ok... I like the wood and how it looks. But i dont need the tower and red house... I rather would have one inn with closed back... Thats what im gonna do. The figs are ok, but i changed them...

Why is everyone complaining about the box? Are people framing them and hanging them up or something. I either toss or put in storage out of sight.
best way I can explain it is boxes are sort of away the set is advertised so if a person who didnt know much about this set walked into a lego store that is there first experience seeing it. in my opinion if that case happened this box would deter many from buying it because of how bad it show cases the set, if that makes sense?
I also dont like black boxes in general and also remember when boxes and instruction were fun and inviting. and I feel like thats not the case any more.

yes they are but lego castle has a long history of making them black. I even said I am fine with it but it would have been cool if lego had made it black to match the castle

I see nothing wrong with the box, most people likely get rid of them anyway. The sets that I do like I flatten the box for storage.
To each there own. True most boxes are thrown out but black boxes just don't look good to me. I can't fully explain it better right now but for this set it made medieval town square look really empty. It just felt like the opposite of good advertising for this set.
I think Lego tries to lean into a more modern look with the black but it just drains out the liveliness of the scene and doesn’t fit the time period this would be set in.

Of all the (many) reviews of this set I’ve seen, this is definitely my favorite. It does happen to precisely fit my evaluation, but it is overall just technically excellent.
As a side note, the positivity in tone is super appreciated. As a 40-year castle fan, I’ve seen the amazing ups and the tragic downs of Castle sets. In that time, I feel like I’ve found the sweet spot between doormat fan and hyper-critical and you absolutely nailed it. Recognize the shortcomings and allow yourself to love the good parts, of which there are a ton.
This is peak Lego Castle fan content. Ah heartfelt thanks from the absolute bullseye of your target market. :)
Aww thanks so much! I feel like I have also found the sweet spot of those two too! My goal with all my reviews is to just give the details and point out what I can from a castle fans perspective! No offense to many of the other reviewers but many of them are not castle fans. So really glad to hear that I did the perfect balance! I also just don’t like being negative all the time and feel like people are over critical. I nit pick but I always back it up with reasons and how I would fix it.

you know when this first was revealed i didn’t really like it much so ive been sitting on whether of not to buy it. this review really convinced me that i do want this set and the figures are awesome. can’t wait for the peasant torsos to go on PIAB so i can buy up a ton and fill up my village with them

I really enjoy the videos on this channel. So thematic and really enjoyable for a Castle fan.
I personally love this village so much. I never got the old one they released so getting this feels like I finally have a set my townsfolk always needed.

An interesting feature of this set is that the villagers are not helpless against any robbers, vikings etc. Scattered along the houses are quite a few weapons including swords, axes, hammers, a spear, knives, shields and bow and arrow.

I love the set. Though it could have been a little more colorful and for the price, they could have used PRINTS. 🙄
Nothing we can really do when it comes to prints. At this point we just got to accept what we got🤷♂️
How do people know when PAB updates their stock? Like what is an estimated time we could expect to see the torsos?

1:41 I've never in my life seen that hood peice in a Lego Ninjago set I think you're getting confused with Lloyds similar hood be his has hair
That might be true I had thought I had seen it used for a few ninjas such as Lloyd but also I don't follow Ninjago at all so I could defiantly be wrong
This set was a lot of fun. I did have some issues with it as a build and as a whole but I do like it.

For me, it’s the laziness on the legs for the Wolfpack fig but doesn’t bother too much. I get the complaints for the box art but it’s not that crazy of a con. Sure, it would be cool as a classic inspired box but this set more so a mixed than the Lion Knights castle. Overall it’s my favorite set from the Icons line this year and my lion knights area of my kingdom is coming together. Just can’t wait for the D&D set cause I’ll be using that as part of the Black Falcons castle (mainly cause idc to over pay for the Brick link one and the creator one is eh plus idc for D&D and the figs are good for canon fodder to make more citizens)
I will tell you. Dnd set isn’t as great as it looks online. I got to see it in person recently and there are some really cool stuff but it’s also VERY delicate in many areas. I wouldn’t buy it day 1 because people are going to be complaining a lot about how easily the dragon in it falls apart.
@@BrickingUpBrad Ik this, I work at a lego store a pretty big one in fact and most of us really dislike the dragon. However I still like the castle build of it and I like the prints for the figs

The oval shield could be used for the queensguard which is considered the most honorable position for a knight. The white boarder doesn't fit for combat to the generic soldier.

I feel like the black boxes are designed to make their primary clientele (afols) not feel bad or judged when buying the set. Like it's saying This is definitely not a kids set, this is for adults. Which is still silly. Lego should be for everyone and so what if an adult buys a set with a cute background?

Hey, enjoyed the video, just wanted to ask, did you intend to put the Inn sign like that? As the 'hand cuffs' that are like the chain holding the sign should be over directly above the flag, a minor thing that I just happened to notice.

I just wish the other oval shield was printed as well. Blank shields are a waste in my opinion.
It makes sense because it is the shield painters shop. So there would be blank shields she is working on but it definitely would have been nice towards get two of that new shield
I wanted to point something out to you in this set and the 90th anniversary castle too. In the instructions for the 90th anniversary castle instructions when it shows previous castle sets it uses the updated logos for the factions, including the Black Knights. This set also uses this updated logo on a letter, with the Black Knights seal on it. I really hope this is hinting to the return of the Black Knights in a future set, especially since they're the only classic faction we haven't gotten remade yet.
I plan on diving into that a bit more in my next video about this set which will talk about the lore! But you’re right that’s a great point!
They are still missing quite a few, not only the black knights. They are missing dark forest, royal knights (although I personally hope they will just subsume it to the lion knights and make some extra fancy torso for them that would fit in with the new lion knight logo / shields), fright knights is missing a lot of their knights - I think they will not remake the Fleur'de'Lis guy though- and depending on what you think about this, the bull knights. Also alternate variations on forest men (I don't understand why they are not just using the same print, but recolor it to blue and black and add blue / black arms to make an awesome torso variance). Oh, and there are the lion knights that came with the bulls, but I do hope they just make a fancy blue lion knight with the same lion knight sigil as the current lion knights. I think we all hope they will remake the Dungeon Master's Castle ... 5K + Euro for that sealed is just soo bad xD.
@@octav1600 Those aren't really "classic castle" factions though as in the way the original Forestmen, Lion Knights/Crusaders and Black Falcons are. The castle factions before these are usually referred to as "vintage castle" with the "classic castle" era being the late 80's to early 90's. While I agree it would be really cool to get a lot more factions remade, I'm not sure how many or when they will be done. I was simply pointing out that they went through the trouble of updating the Black Knights logo, it would be odd to not use it, especially since it's now the only faction from that era not remade yet.

i think the set itself is amazing and is a definate pickup for any lego castle fan but the main issue i have is the marketing. its not in a yellow lego castle box but instead a lego ideas box and it seems like its being marketed twords the lego ideas community and not the castle community but the build itself is an addon to the lion knights castle so i have no idea why its in black box. other than that its an amazing set.
