宋·释道原《景德传灯录》卷二十三:“问:‘牛头未见四祖时如何？’师曰:‘自由自在。’曰:‘见后如何？’师曰:‘自由自在。’” Volume 23 of Jingde Chuandeng Lu by Daoyuan of Song Dynasty: "Ask: 'What was Niutou like before he met the Fourth Patriarch?' The master said: 'He was free and at ease.' Ask: 'What was like after he met him?' The master said: 'He was free and at ease.'"
自由自在 Describes a feeling of being free from restraints and restrictions, and being very relaxed and comfortable; be one's own man
