  • Nice compact Electric Gramophone player from the H.M.V Company in Hayes. Featuring their outstanding "Hyper-sensitive" Electro-magnetic pickup that requires a step-up-transformer which on this machine was fitted underneath the motor board. A quiet running Idler turntable of good quality that has it's speed governed by 2 x Capacitors rated at 1uF & 1.3uF. The pickup has a very nice tonal output, here being played with an H.M.V Miniature thorn needle of which I was lucky to recently find a packet of 10 in un-used condition. The H.M.V mini thorns are a little smaller at the fixing end than the Columbia & Im branded types & fit this pickup well. The tone is a little mellower than when played with a mini steel needle & gives a different character to the recording being played. This amazing piece by Earl Bostic seemed an obvious choice to test this machine with.
