  • Hey fellow surf addicts, so today I'm giving my first impressions on the Pyzel Phantom, made by master shaper Jon Pyzel. Most Pyzel boards, I have no real issues with, and the Phantom, is no exception. Another great small wave performance board. Obviously a go to choice for many Joes and pros, this one is a must for the quiver and easily my new favourite all rounder, especially with summer on its way. I can't wait to fully review this one.

    Surfed a phantom as my daily board for 3yrs. You’re spot on that it’s more of a front-footed board. Most important thing I can say is ride this board as a quad! It absolutely lights up speed and flow, practically a different board and imo how the board is meant to be ridden

      Amazing brother, thanks for the tip, I will definitely have to try it as a quad in the future. What quad setup did you run in it?

    Hey Jake, thank you very much for the amazing content. Definitely, you are delivering great value.
    I would like to ask for advice. I live in southwest Portugal, and I surf all year around (winter 4/3, summer 3/2 wetsuit), beach breaks, and reefs from 2 to 8 feet most of the time with a bit of texture. 3 to 5 times per week. I am 44 years old, fit, 5.9" and something between 160 and 170 pounds depending on the time of the year, and more of a front-footed surfer. I have been surfing the Lost Killer Quiver 5'10 - 30,5L PU for the last 6 years, but I have not entirely enjoyed it. I am Intermediate/advanced.
    I have 3 questions. I am between the Phantom 5'10 30,10L and the P2 XL 5,10 - 30,8L, it would be a one-board quiver, with one would you recommend? Pyzel is built here by Polen and their boards get pressure dents really easy, do you have any recommendations about what PU glassing should I go for? Should I use more volume because of a thicker glassing? Thanks very much for your answer.

      Hey mate, first off Portugal is one of my favourite countries on planet earth, Ola Tudo Bem. As a one board quiver, I would recommend you lean towards the Pyzalien 2, as It goes better in bigger surf due to it's tail outline & overall rocker. I would not go any thicker with The Pyzalien 2 in glassing. I would just stick to the standard 4x4. Polen surfboards make some good equipment brother. The Phantom is better for people in The Gold Coast, Sydney, Israel and Spain, for example, as they are smaller wave locations generally on a day to day basis. Both are good options, but for Portugal's Atlantic power, I would go The Pyzalien 2.

      @@jakesboardreviews Thanks for the really helpful answer.
      I like the tail of the Phantom, but to be honest, I don't have experience with swallowtails, maybe it is time to go all in and get a Pyzalien.
      You are welcome anytime over here.

    Hey Jake. What board do u think is easier to ride for a lower intermediate surfer. Pyzel phantom or Js xero gravity. What are your suggestions

    • @jakesboardreviews
      @jakesboardreviews  Год назад +2

      I would say they do have similarities with the feel in the rail, but for me, I’d say the Phantom is much easier to paddle into waves. I felt the Xero gravity was a little more difficult to ride if that helps 👍

    Did you find the phantom had too much foam under chest and needed more front foot pressure? Anyway didn’t like it. Saw your review on fever and that board sounds much better.

    • @jakesboardreviews
      @jakesboardreviews  11 месяцев назад +2

      The Phantom definitely is a more front footed board. I 100% prefer it over the Fever personally, even though they are two different boards from two different shapers. I’m still doing further testing on it, and I’ve enjoyed it so far 👍

      It’s better than the JS Xero. The JS Xero isn’t even in the same league for me personally. The Pyzel Phantom is a very good daily driver.

    How would you compare this to the mini ghost? More user friendly? Paddling power? Etc also curious how this board compares to the volume 2

    • @jakesboardreviews
      @jakesboardreviews  10 месяцев назад +2

      Hey mate, I would say I like the phantom a lot better than the mini ghost. I would also say it paddles better for me than the mini ghost did and feels less loose. The Volume 2 from Chilli I haven't ridden, as my mate here in Australia rode it and he is still riding it if that helps.

    Jake, Killer review bud. I need a step up for this winter in the OBXs and have been trying to decide whether this or the 74. Thanks for helping me make a decision. 🤙

    • @jakesboardreviews

      Thanks for the support mate, glad you enjoyed it. They have a series of boards they made as a 3 board quiver in Pyzel's series.
      1. Phantom: For Small to slightly overhead waves.
      2. Shadow: A stretched shortboard version of the Phantom, for 2-6 ft waves.
      3. The Ghost: A step up for anything 3-10 ft for punchy or big open canvases/ hollow sections.
      The 74 is a good board as well, I'll need more time to make a verdict, but the phantom is more user friendly. Maybe the ghost could be good if you live in the outer banks, hope that helps mate. I've never ridden the ghost, but I've only heard good things.

      OBX pumps in the winter and I have ridden my ghost there and its absolutely sick. If you're looking at surfing when its really pumping there the best board for head high and up is definitely the ghost

      @jakesboardreviews  11 месяцев назад

      Hey mate, funny you mention it, I feel a few similarities in the way they both surf, especially due to the fuller rails. I would say the phantom is a much better paddler, with more foam forward. The Xero Gravity is slightly better in bigger surf, but the Phantom can handle overhead waves no problem if that helps 👍
