You seemed almost apologetic for looking at properties. We follow you because you're entertaining, interesting and nice people. Whether you're in a motorhome or house.
The wife and I have a home base in France but still go out in the van for months on end, We felt that after 8 years we just wanted our own space and somewhere to stay especally during the high season, Its also great to work on the van which is now 22 years old.and get her ready for winter so we can follow the sun South. It also gives you a break from people which for me as I get older (now 59 years old) I just want to avoid 🙂 Go for it guys you will not regret it.
We just bought a fab home in mussomelli sicily. Not a 1 euro one but a move in ready with all furniture 10 rooms plus 2 cellars plus 180 degree view of the mountains and hillside from the balconies. Its worth looking at mussomelli. What an amazing place with such welcoming people
Thanks and congratulations! We were just in Sicily for a month and although we thought about property there and also in Sardinia, we would prefer to be on the mainland for practical reasons. Mussomeli looks lovely, all the best settling in! 😊
I would love to see you guys renovate a house. I don’t just watch your videos because of the traveling, but also because I like your personalities. So making a “home improvement” video series would be fun. 🙂
I think being closer to, or on the outskirts of, a small town, neighbours who can keep an eye on your property while you're away, balcony with a sea view, little enclosed back garden for Millie, quick morning walk for fresh bread, evening stroll to a family run eatery, is the way to go. A lot of us dream of being in the middle of nowhere, while what we really need is a sense of belonging, a community, children's voices, friendship with older people....
There's a balance somewhere in all of that. ❤️ We're trying not to look at it as a 'forever' decision, but something that will suit us in the next period of 8-10 years. What we need in the short term - while we're still intent on spending more time away from our base - is probably not the same as what we need at a later point.

Great show folks. We really enjoyed the surprised format on a future dwelling. Please keep up the travels as the 2 of you are great and interesting on the humour of travel, food and much more. Very honest on your future thoughts. Get a property with a big patch of land and establish a camp site or a over night park up for your friends, so a property close to the beech would be great. Loved the funny side on the properties on the video with the old metal bed frames for the hand rails and boundary fences that seems to be a big rural reuse in Italy and the houses for sale with no fitted kitchens as the as we did the same to suit our needs in Cadibona, Savona 15 years ago, home of your 1st speeding ticket. Hope to get our new van next year and visit some of your visited sites over the past 3 years as Cadibona will be a base from that of Dublin. Looking forward to the next show and more properties! Very best of house hunting. Brian and Jen.
Thanks Brian & Jen! And to think that those were some of the already highly filtered properties on our list! Imagine what the others may have looked like! 😂 Having a base makes travel a lot easier, especially around Europe. You must be so excited and looking forward to your new van. We hope you're going to come find us somewhere along the way! 😊 PS: first and only speeding ticket! 😜
I knew it... ;-) Great video guys. I love your thought processes. Keep looking, your little (or not so little!) piece of Italy is out there. Its so true that when you are thinking of doing something like this, that you need to use your head but also listen to your heart. Which unfortunately ends up with a lot of pulling and pushing of ideas. I have remotely looked at some 1 dollar projects in Italy before. The reality is a sensible buy would need at least 60-100K of investment. Looking forward to seeing how it goes for you. I love how you think !

Hello, this was a very usefull video! I am also looking for a rural olive farm in Spain. And have come across the same as you did. Lots of little barns for sale with plots of land and productive olive trees. Low on options of expanding the house to make it live able. I really like the 'Seventy'house as it has a lot of potential and a great location. Keep on listing the pro's and cons so we can all learn from you 💖
Thanks guys, this was great - looking forward to the next one! We're on the "looking at thousands online" stage so its really helpful seeing the next stage :-)
If you’re ready to settle then it sounds great and I definitely understand the desire to put down roots after being nomadic for many years. However I’d be cautious about buying and still expecting to travel as much as you seem to want to. There are quite a few travel vloggers who have recently bought houses (which need some work) and they thought they could still travel but never manage to. If you buy something that doesn’t need work and can just be locked up for months then maybe it’s possible. Or if your travel changes to a couple of months away then back home for a couple then imo I think that works. It’s great to have the options and good luck thinking it all through.
These are all the challenges that we are considering and having to weigh up against each other! Makes it tricky but also very interesting and a good "problem" to be dealing with! We're definitely not ready to "settle down" just yet! 😜
Loved the video… and any additional information you can share about how easy it is for non Italian people to buy would be fab to know (appreciate you’re not estate agents 😅 but assume you’ll come up with blockers in that area? Happy house hunting guys 🦊❤️
Morning I was wondering why you changed course now we know. Just done buying a bit of land with a garage on it and converting for living built a shelter for the camper. If doing it again I buy a 120 150 meter square warehouse leave 60 meter for the camper and turn the rest into living, the reason being secured do what ever you want for living and zero maintenance. Look forward to the Grek adventure.

You probably know that Puglia is struggling with an infestation of their olive trees and they are dying in record numbers. There currently is no cure. It is Xylella Fastidiosa and is why some of the trees in your photos show dead and impaired trees. This affects the purchase price so check the trees on your properties that you bid on. Good luck!
Thank you. Yes, that farm "seventy" originally had double the number of trees and they were only able to save about half. Definitely a contributing factor to it decision making. Thanks for the advice! 😊

The last one for sure. 20,000 m3 is like over 4 acres. If they would allow a light weight roof top room that would be great, you could double the floor area if the planning dept allows it
We also like that one. But it's not allowed to cover or even enclose the roof. Even enclosing the front porch is a complication. If that place was marginally larger inside we would have snapped it up.
Doesn't it also have to be near a bakery and a Gelato ice cream parlour?😉 Seriously though, I hope you both find the ideal property as a base for your future adventures. Good luck. 👍
I'm so happy to find you guys...I'm a South African and have been dreaming of doing exactly the same.... autovilla and Italian house ... I'm also a realist and you address all my questions .my main unanswered question is regarding visas....are you still on s.a. passports ? Or do you renew there while travelling. Does owning property in Italy help with eu visas.? As it does in Portugal
Hello! Nice to hear from a fellow Saffer! The bad news is that owning property in Italy makes no difference to obtaining a visa or residency. That's a completely separate issue. You can of course buy property but will be bound by Schengen stay limits. You might be able to apply for a mult-entry Schengen visa valid for multiple years, but this won't change the fact that you won't be able to spend more than 90 days out of every 180 in the region. We don not travel on SA passports as we both hold Italian citizenship (although we're not resident in Italy).
Hi André and Lisa! My wife and I are slow travellers through Asia and South America so far. We are thinking of how to make a motorhome throughout Eurasia and Northern Africa work for us and the hybrid lifestyle you talk about in this video fits very closely with our thinking. FWIW I wouldn’t take on a project home unless I was prepared to devote at least a year to the project and I’m not. From there little research I’ve done, it seems that you can buy genuine walk-in and live happily property for very similar prices to the project home once the real costs of the project are all paid, ie around EU250,000. Is that something you see as realistic and might you consider it for yourselves? With love, Ken
Hi Ken! You're thinking is in line with ours - especially after we've been looking around for a while now. We're leaning more and more to something that's ready to live in asap - but ticking the most of our boxes and (obviously) as cost effective as possible. It's not just the purchase price to consider (as the capital won't exactly be productive) but also ongoing cost of ownership. In the budget you're talking about you will find plenty of really nice options - ready to live in. All the best with your search and travels!
As a former many times guest to Malta, I may also recommend a sailing to there, besides the fact that the Island/State is very densely populated. And we Danes have made our own home and a small town in Mellieha, with planes flying Danes down each week. But the several fortified towns and the ancient history is very interesting. Finn. Denmark
When we we're in Sicily we strongly considered to take a ferry to Malta for a couple of weeks. But in the end, we were enjoying our time in Sicily too much to add another adventure. It's still on our bucket list though!
@@WeWillNomad My wifes ancester, a young woman coming from Sicily to a wealthy Danish Family. And at a time we could have bought a combined Tour to both Sicily and Malta, which we sadly didn't. I would/could also have brought my expensive Brompton folding bike to Malta, but my dear wife didn't find it such a good idea, as they both drove in the wrong side and on narrow roads with much traffic, so I never became allowed to do it. I would have liked to visit the Airplane Museum in the midle of the Island. Finn. Denmark
In our next video we talk a bit more about our experience. To look for properties we used www.immobiliare.it and www.idealista.com/en/. There is plenty of information available to clarify the process. Good luck!
Big move to buy property, especially for the short term, although I'm sure it would be in a better condition after you had it for a while. So far they are not exactly comfortable looking!
Great vid. Similar opportunities in Spain but unless you can DIY then you are at the mercy of local tradesmen who soon have you over a barrel. I don't blame them either. 👍
Have you got any thoughts on income tax. I know Italy likes to claim you as a tax payer if you own a property there. Of course you also own a property in South Africa, but with both it's going to bring up some tie breaker rules which may not be easy. There is also the 7% tax system in Italy if you buy in the right place, not sure if that's going into your planning?
Tax will depend on your country of residence. Of course you can be resident in multiple countries. In our case we still pass the test as resident in SA and are registered taxpayers in SA. There is a tax treaty between SA and Italy which will prevent double taxation as SA tax is on worldwide income. If/when we move our tax residency to Italy there will be some changes but we're not considering that right now. There are some benefits to being tax residents in Italy (for us) as you pay a lower transfer duty on first property (2% vs 9%) and there are no annual rates/taxes on your primary property in Italy. You also get access to local benefits like health ect. What you mention about the 7% flat tax is correct - it's an incentive to attract foreign citizens to certain areas. We don't qualify for it as we're already Italian citizens (although not resident). Regardless of whether you're registered as a taxpayer in Italy you will still be liable for some ongoing taxes as a property owner, such as annual municipal property tax. If you sell property there might be Capital Gains Tax, however once again there are exemptions available for primary residences and properties held for specific periods.
Interesting video, thank you. However, If these are the best properties you found after sifting through hundreds online, I would hate to see the rest. Also, you know you need to maintain olive groves year round, and cant just leave it and walk away for months on end.
@@heidihinchey4014 Quite right. It's actually quite common to let someone take care of the land and trees without payment in exchange for them harvesting the olives for themselves.
Hmmmm....100,000euro......buy campervans in USA and Australia and go for it, leave them there and keep going back, get out of overcrowded/overtouristed central europe, there you go - a plan for the next 10 years, then go buy that olive grove farmhouse with its world of uninteresting problems...but motorhome problems and travel issues/fun/sponsorships will keep us watching on and please go travel Turkiye and eastern Europe away from wars. I reckon you guys would knock it out of the water regarding North America/Aussie travel.
Perhaps sanity will prevail 😋 Of course, what you're saying is also on our mind and that's always been our plan. And we might still do exactly that even if we do have a home base. It must just make sense financially - which is the tricky part 😁
If nothing else, we're learning a lot. It's also not just the bureaucracy, but the sheer number of buildings not built according to plan or code. It's a minefield.
@WeWillNomad we live in the south of Spain very happily. Lots of campers in the winter. The problem encountered by some who lock up their vans on plots or open campsites is mice eating the electrics. or wasps nesting etc. I would try to find a plot with a garage or some cover.
Lucky duckies, thank you.
@ Thanks! Best of luck!!
Finn. Denmark
how do you find this properties. I like puglia and I would like to buy a property there, could you guide me please
In our next video we talk a bit more about our experience. To look for properties we used www.immobiliare.it and www.idealista.com/en/. There is plenty of information available to clarify the process. Good luck!
A home base is a great idea.
Thanks Michelle, we think so too at this point! 😊
Big move to buy property, especially for the short term, although I'm sure it would be in a better condition after you had it for a while. So far they are not exactly comfortable looking!
🤣 The more we look, the more we're freaked out by what we see.
Great vid. Similar opportunities in Spain but unless you can DIY then you are at the mercy of local tradesmen who soon have you over a barrel. I don't blame them either. 👍
Definitely the same thing in Italy. It's a minefield! Our idea of a 'project' is definitely fading fast 😁
70 square meters would be perfect. my supercool appartment is about 80 nice square meters just for me.
We agree, that's why we were so excited about "seventy" - turns out 36 square meters inside is a bit too little! Thanks for watching! 😊
We're well aware. Thanks for watching.
They can also hire someone to take care of them while they are away. That's definitely not a deal breaker
@@heidihinchey4014 Quite right. It's actually quite common to let someone take care of the land and trees without payment in exchange for them harvesting the olives for themselves.
hi I back
Hi Andrew!
Big decisions eh
:)
Red tape in Italy is infamous. Spain or Portugal still has it but are better!
Can also mean you get 25 per cent more life out of your tyres in the heat
Mice. Our worst nightmare as well when leaving the van for a while.
