Panel: BCE's down beat guidance is not surprising

Sales growth was disappointing; BCE is underperforming Rogers in almost every aspect; areas that are showing strength are being offset by other factors but none of this is terribly surprising, says Matthew Dolgin, equity analyst, Morningstar Research Services LLC. There isn't much to like about BCE except the dividend, says Martin Pelletier, senior portfolio manager for Trivest Wealth at Wellington-Altus Private Counsel.

They managed a hole segment without talking about the elephant in the room. The company responsible for driving competition in the wireless sector is Quebecor via Freedom Mobile after the Shaw acquisition. They are putting big pressure on the fat cats of Bell, Telus and Rogers. It’s great for Canadians if you ask me.

When it’s earnings are above its dividend payout , BCE will offer some clarity on dividend certainty . Till then it is a speculative play . No longer blue chip . A dividend cut seems necessary and current share price seems high .
