I think Can was the best live (rock) band of all time. Until recently one could only hear this on bootlegs or on the official double CD of the 30th anniversary "Can Box" or by watching the "Free Concert" video, so these new LP editions are really welcome.
@@Michael45RPM I think there was a kind of telepathic communication between the musicians, given the sometimes almost spooky congruity in these live improvisations. I have a similar impression when listening to some of the old "intuitive music" recordings of the Stockhausen group ("From the Seven Days" boxset, for example. And Czukay and Schmidt both studied with Stockhausen). Things happen there which according to statistic probability just should not happen in such a context. Purely materialistically minded people may dismiss such ideas, of course. BTW, I agree with you that there are similarities to jazz. After all, Jaki Liebezeit was an excellent free jazz drummer before he joined Can. But as he said himself, he got fed up with this style and wanted to play more rhythm pattern-oriented music.
Just heard about this: On January 28, Blue Note Records will release Round Trip: Ornette Coleman On Blue Note, the first-ever boxset to be released as part of the Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series. The 6-LP set presents all-analog 180g Tone Poet Vinyl Editions of all six Blue Note albums that the iconoclastic saxophonist and composer appeared on in the late-1960s including his five albums as a leader-the two volume At The ‘Golden Circle’ Stockholm (1965), The Empty Foxhole (1966), New York Is Now! (1968), and Love Call (1968)-as well as his lone sideman appearance on New And Old Gospel (1967) by saxophonist Jackie McLean. Round Trip was produced by Joe Harley with vinyl mastered by Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio directly from the original analog master tapes. The vinyl is manufactured at Record Technology Incorporated (RTI) and packaged in deluxe Stoughton Printing “Old Style” Tip-On Jackets that come encased in a hardcover slipcase. The set also includes a booklet featuring rare photos and an enlightening essay by critic Thomas Conrad.
Hi, I had the opportunity to see GuruGuru live a few weeks ago and Kraan a bit later. Manni Neumeier with 80 years on the drums, fabulous. Then Kraan, Helmut Hattler, Peter and Jan Wolbrandt, the music could have been from yesterday, so fresh. Can in Stuttgart, all thumbs up.
I can't wait to hear Live In Brighton!!! The first release from this series is absolutely amazing and the good news is that Spoon Records is definitely releasing at least three more 💚
Hi Michael, FYI if you aren’t already aware of this: Available for preorder. This vinyl box set is the first-ever official release of La Monte Young’s Trio for Strings (1958), recorded live from the Dream House, a legendary sound-and-light installation by Young, Marian Zazeela, and Jung Hee Choi, and performed by The Theatre of Eternal Music String Ensemble led by Charles Curtis and featuring Curtis, cello; Reynard Rott, cello; Erik Carlson, violin, viola; and Christopher Otto, violin, viola, at Dia:Chelsea in 2015. Featuring a box cover designed by Choi with calligraphy by Zazeela, the collection includes four discs and a 32-page set of liner notes with essays by Young, Zazeela, and Choi. Ships early 2022. Available only through diaart website.
Thanks, Harold. I did not know this. Is this officially sanctioned by La Monte Young? After all, he is infamous for his extremely restrictive release policies. Only three official vinyl releases in all those years!! I have them all of course and some bootlegs. But there must be lots of old tapes lying around at his premises and he just won't release anything. Really incredible.
@@markusberzborn6346 Hi Marcus, it appears to be an official release but I only know what is posted on the diaart website quoted in my comment. The only reference to it on the mela foundation website is in the media link but that refers to the actual performance and includes a video excerpt but doesn’t reference the vinyl release. The information listed there states that the performance was actually recorded at Dia so that strongly suggests it’s authorized. If you have concerns in that regard I suppose you could make an inquiry at the mela foundation. Hope that helps.
I bought both albums recently. I bought Live in Brighton yesterday and like the guitar more on the Brighton one so far . The Brighton one is also gold vinyl and looks nice and shiny.
I own a good bit of Can, but I've never heard that live performance. I need to check it out. My least favorite color pressing, strictly cosmetically speaking, is clear. Least favorite by far.
Hey Eric always a pleasure to have you here!!! Clear is ok for me as i said my least favorite soundwise is "gold". I think, if you like Can, those live recordings are very special
These are great albums which weren’t on my radar. I’m only a causal fan of Can and don’t know a lot of their music beyond the “Big 3”; Tago Mago, Future Days, and Ege Bamyashi These live albums, while improvised are exquisite, and straddle many genres which I love. Probably will pass on the actual LP, since I think these are digitally sourced, but thanks for getting me to take a deeper dive!
Thanks for reviewing these - I’ve been curious about both of these LPs. The enthusiastic comments below encourage me to try one or both. Curious whether you’ve listen to any the Secret Rhythms releases from Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit? I’ve a couple on CD and digital download.
Michael - Love your channel! Thanks for all the content on great sounding reissues. I like your newer blurry background. What type of camera are you using?
Its not 100% accurate that this is all improvisations, about 75% of all live CAN is based on their recorded songs, excellent review ! (Im gonna have to buy them both on CD, but which one should i start with, i have all other Can releases besides these two and the terrible "Rite Time")
Even jazz improvisations are mostly based on a certain song. If there is no preplanned basis at all, the term would be rather "free music". Or Stockhausen called it "intuitive music". But some Can live tracks are indeed completely extemporized and the remarkable thing is that they still have a certain form and structure and a very natural flow. I think Czukay called that "instantaneous composition".
Thanks for this great review, and I couldn't agree more (I think Brighton is the better of the two; it gets a bit wilder). What did you think of the 3rd release of Cuxhaven? I was really disappointed it was so short; they should've utilized two or three of the incomplete concerts that exist, for that release. My worst vinyl experience is "splatter" that isn't done well and isn't flat, causing constant surface noise--I have an $80 release of YETI by Amon Duul II that looks cool but sounds AWFUL.
