Barenaked Ladies were led by Steven Page and Ed Robertson as a songwriting duo in Canada. They met in school even though they were a year or two apart. Both were in the advanced track and it shows in some very sharp and intelligent lyrics. Basically…they are smarter than most all of us. Also, they are self-admitted nerds to a degree, both to pop-culture and to music. First hit it on Canadian radio in 92. Some of their music is fast and has an almost rap-cadence, but definitely not all of it. Maybe 10-15% of it. They can be folksy, alternative rock, very ballady, but ultimately fun and thoughtful. Unfortunately Steven left the band about a decade ago over differences and legal issues. They did rejoin for a one-night appearance to be admitted to Canada’s Rock Hall of Fame, which seemed to mend some fences. BNL still tours and makes music today without Steven and Ed as the main singer, and others taking lead here and there as well.

Most bands do have that though over time. They split up in the late 2000’s and BNL made their first album without Steven in 2010. Steven made a few pretty good solo albums himself. I do hope they eventually decide to tour together again or make another album with the OG lineup.

Hey guys. Luv your channel. After seeing a lot of the 90s reactions you've done, it inspired me to put together a 90s playlist. The 90s was a formative decade for me. I started them as a high school freshman, took a year off to work before going to tech school for 2 years, and 3 years of my first out of school job. So there were a lot of milestones in that time period. I ended up making a second, more condensed list as the first one was around 1500 songs. The second is a little over half that.
Listening to songs from just the 90s for the past few weeks has brought back a lot of memories. So thanks for the inspiration & breathing a bit of new life into someone approaching the big Five O. 😊
P.S. Love Female Fridays, and if you wouldn't mind a suggestion, how about doing a day where you do original songs vs covers? I know you've done some in the past, but there's usually a lot of time in between them. Doing at the same time would allow you to see both more differences & similarities. Just my $.02.

You guys will LOVE their STRICTLY fun 80s song "Grade 9".
    It has a quicker pace
It will introduce you to what life was like as a BRAND NEW high school student (Grade 9) back in 1982
    AND
It throws in a small bit from 2 OTHER big songs at the time (that I am SURE you 2 will figure out - or at LEAST J. will know the group with the one. That is a BIG, unnecessary hint. The other bit you should BOTH know & if not, Amber will surely know it!)
Glad that you are getting to know more of our Canadian music. ♥

Brian Wilson Live. But the album version. One good thing about growing up in Detroit: we know Canadian artists before the rest of America.

I first saw BNL at my college (Fanshawe College Ont.) in like 1991...they set up their equipment outside the SUB building on the lawn courtyard and started playing...was so good. I've seen them 5 times since. You've never heard a better live song from them than "Brian Wilson"....you should check it out. (live version) Conan O'Brian made the remark that no live band ever sounded so good on his set.

Love this one. It has one of my favorite lines I've ever heard: "I could hide out under there. I just made you say 'underwear.'" Always good for a giggle.
I'm noticing a trend of suggestions for their happy and peppy stuff, which is great. Allow me to buck the trend and say that you need to hear "Call and Answer."

I remember in an interview they did way back then (probably on MuchMusic, Canada's MTV) that they said, when trying to explain their broad appeal, that "the moms like us". A wholesome Canadian band, with a naughty, cheeky name. From Toronto.
