It’s not a better idea necessarily. It’s not true competition (which is what capitalism is about) since rental car companies get taxed too. Once Turo starts getting taxed, or rental companies stop getting taxed, only then will it be true free market competition.

    Turo:
Does not have unlimited mileages (bad for long road trips)
Does not allow one way (you can only drive around town)
Does not offer collision waiver (you can destroy a rental car from Hertz with waiver and pay nothing but not Turo, even full coverage requires you to pay)
Does not inspect or maintain their cars (some owners are lazy and car condition varies)
Does not have certainty and the reservation can be either canceled or changed (no grab and go technology)
Dose not offer standard corporate check in (different owners have different attitudes about your licensing requirements)

Works out cheaper for me and is more flexible.

Car rental is the worst customer experience you can get. They never have the car you booked, they force you to buy insurances you already have, they try to charge you for scratches that were already there. We said no insurance and the guy kept giving us the paper to sign with insurance... and this happened more than once. We rented 1 car every year for the last 10 years, and it's been arguying all the time just to get what we booked for. I wish the whole car renting business would go bankrupt.

we have a few car dealers that sell you a car with a guaranteed buy back so if you are staying for a month or two its the cheaper than hiring, but a lot of back packers buy a cheap station wagon or van, use them as a camper and dump them at the airport when they leave, as insurance is not compulsory and you can pick up a pretty reasonable vehicle for 1000-2000 privately, and they dont use hotels motels or camp grounds, its a cheap holiday , buyers have to do the name change on the vehicle, most dont bother so no tickets get paid either if the seller does their part

Renting your car out like this is a bad idea. If a thief decides to steal it, even if you know where it is, the cops won't go after them until you give them 10 days written notice. On top of that you are in a grey area in the law where it isn't really considered a theft.

Tiro will likely keep prices/rates affordable to build consumer dependency, just like Lyft, and later Uber, not to mention AirBnB. Once they have a stronghold, they will increase rates to match other rental agencies, and cut compensation to car owners. No corporations, even if small, will become big and greedy.

Fees (other than sales tax) amount to 52.46. The government and quasi government agencies simply cannot resist getting some action. I wonder what a vehicle license recovery fee, and customer facility fee, really are, other than a way to quote a lower price, then jack it up at the counter. If I wasn't "adventure" adverse, I might just look into something like this.

Big companies hate the free market. Thats why the owners of pretty much all the biggest companies vote left.
They cry for regulations, they write those rules, then the small competitors can't afford the compliance and the monopoly is locked in.
The free market is the enemy of big lazy companies and the best for small entrepreneurs starting out.

Mike Gaskin because Turo needs no physical presence. Here in Madrid a local car sharing company has partnered with the airport. I can use one of their cars to get to or from the airport. They are all electric Renault Zoes. I drop it Infront of my house and forget about it. It's faster and cheaper than a taxi or even the metro if it is 3 of us. And the airport gets 7 Euros per rental. I think that is fair. Turo could do the same.

When they walked us out to the car I noticed right away it was a v6 (no brembos, smaller wheels, badging). They tried to play it off like it was the same thing. I told them to refund me if they didn't have the SS (I had reserved it ahead of time) and low and behold they were able to find the only one left on the lot.
