I grew up in The Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.) and am grateful for the many beautiful lessons and traditions I learned from that time in my life. There was a lack in this type of practical family teaching and discussion as we were were often times just instructed to “Pray” about “it” which left many families hurting because we’d come to church and heard a good word, shouted & danced but did not have the tools to come home after church and build healthy relationships so THANK YOU Sheard family for this series. I’m no longer in C.O.G.I.C but still have a heart for it’s many members. God bless

I love this last time I got a response from kie I didn't know if it was real or not I said something about your prayer...but this helped me...I got pregnant at 18 and had her at 19 and my mom was hard parent but now that I have 2 children I see but I was determined to be more understanding but still firm. My oldest is 21 and we have incorporated friendship but still the line is there to not cross I'm me being the parent. But we are close and I'm determined to leave them something when I die and not bills either. Lol love y'all but kiearra my other sister

What if your parents don’t give u something to be proud of . Then what ?

Hi, Pamela. 😊 Bishop Sheard started answering your question at 02:30 (2 minutes 30 seconds). He basically said still honor them. You can still honor your parents despite whatever they did or didn’t do and be proud of YOUR actions. (As I’m speaking to you, I’m reminding myself, too.) Pray for them. If you interact with them, be kind to them in your speech and actions. Send holiday cards or presents. Call sometimes just to connect and chat as humans: “What TV show are you watching? Did you see the game the other day?” Practice patience and grace. Speak life into them. Discuss their good attributes to others when you discover them instead of always harping on the bad. Reflect on what they taught you and appreciate that the bad example they showed you is what you will NOT continue as a spouse or parent.
I understand there might be a lot of hurt and pain based on the parenting or lack thereof a child received (abuse, abandonment, etc). Also, seek therapy to help your healing process in addition to building a relationship with Christ. A bad relationship with your parents will have as much control over you as you allow. It’s possible to get closure and healing without them. It’s possible to forgive them and decide to do better in your own life.
God calls us to love our neighbors and enemies and forgive infinitely (70 x 7). This applies to parents. Walking with Christ ain’t easy. He gives us clear instructions. Pressing toward those standards will cause us growing pains and prune us for more fruitfulness. I pray the best with you and your parents, Pamela.
