I think it should be titled devil may cry not ff16 because the director said to be coming from dmc franchise 😂 That's why the gameplay so much like dmc
That's a shame that you can't control your other party members in FFXVI. From the Ys-like UI, I thought it would be a super party-based ARPG where every character has unique abilities, like Xenoblade or modern Ys. Not sure why they didn't do that.
It is best to use the eikon abilities to break the breakable enemies in my opinion. Otherwise it can take some time. You do get another thing where if you press on the sticks it powers you up and slowly (I mean SLOWLY) regenerate health and I use that mostly on the downed enemies since it is rinse repeat. Eikon abilities generate said ability and while using the power you let your powers cooldown.
I'd still call it FF16 but i'd add DMC somewhere before or after FF depending on preferences and remove the RPG tag to name it j-action game. Final Fantasy has been lost for a few years now and it saddens me to see how they gradually went for more and more action but well if it's what sells and it makes people happy...juste remove rpg from the tag and have your fun i guess.
I've been saying for a while that SQEX are ashamed of their turn-based/ATB JRPG roots. The last single player FF game that didn't disappoint me was FF12 and that was basically a single player MMO. Hell, they even abandoned the turn-based ATB combat for FF7R.
Sad what FF has become, an action game ripoff of Game of Thrones featuring gay characters kissing. And to top it off, this westernized DMC clone is censored in English.
So true about FF16. They have ruined the franchise! It's just a AAA hack and slash with the Final Fantasy label slapped over the top of it. Such a disappointment.
Wait until you play the complete version of FF16. You will definitely start seeing the flaws the game has that some people fail to see. I really hope Dragon Quest 12 doesn’t go this route.
I liked ff16, just wish it was more of a rpg and had more of a focus on the party instead of just clive when it comes down to combat. There were some good side quests, most were just regular fetch quests though. As much as i liked it, the game didn’t feel like final fantasy like you were saying. It felt like a action adventure game set in the final fantasy universe. Still good tho. I’m pretty sure ff7 rebirth will be a few steps up tbh. Can’t wait for 2/29.
Huge dmc fan but a New ff fan. played 15 hated it but i liked ff7r. Dmc5 is in my top 5 games of all time, so there was no way I was not going to get it. I can understand why long time fans have moved on from it. I wonder why they have no atb Ff yet. They can do both makes no sense. So yeah i understand.
ff16 get it on sale & price drop after it has all its DLC. It is not Final Fantasy, it has elements of FF but so did a movie from roughly 20 years ago.
Let's see if you still think that FF16 isn't a Final Fantasy game after you beat the game. I honestly think combat gameplay doesn't define a game as a final fantasy game, but the story and lore does. I've play a lot of final fantasy games and this one is my fave so far. Anyway, I hope you make a full review of it and I look forward to watching it. Thanks for the vid!
When the VAST Majority of your Mainline Games have been JRPGs, you cant expect your Fans to be happy when you start turning it into an Action Game instead. This should have been a Spin Off, not a Mainline Title.
I think Eric had a good take. He never said it was a bad game. He basically talked about how square abuses the name which is true. If all that matters is story then Square should just put the final fantasy title on every game.
Damn, could have not get the story more wrongly. Yeah we know, there is no kids using revealing clothing to be appealing for you. But, try to not to talk 💩 about something you don’t know about.
TL;DW list: * Good: - The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails (First 2012 Japanese only PSP release. Worldwide multi platform release in 2023. Spinoff of Trails series. Pros: Looks fantastic, good story. Decent gameplay. Remaster fixes many balance issues. Decent combat. Friendly interface. Cons: Bad shopping. Platforming sometimes frustrating. Combat not as great as Ys games (but still decent). Extremely frustrating bosses.) - Rhapsody II: Ballad of the Little Princess (Original Japanese only 1999 PS1 title. Later Asian only multi platform releases. 2023 worldwide PC release. Also part of 2023 US pack 'Marl Kingdom Chronicles' on Switch, PS5 & PC. Pros: Beautiful, cutesy pixel art. Decent English dub. Silly but charming songs. Good, quick interface. Addictive & fun game. Great humour. Better than 1st series title. Cons: High encounter rate. Easy game.) - Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom (Original Japanese only 2000 PS2 title. 2014 JP only PS3 release. 2023 worldwide PC release. Also part of 2023 US pack 'Marl Kingdom Chronicles' on Switch, PS5 & PC. Pros: Tear-jerking late arc in story. Beautiful 2.5D graphics. Encounter rate reduced considerably from predecessor; better exploration. Combat is good but unbalanced with many issues (see below). Addictive & super fun game, despite its major flaws. Erick says it's the best out of all 3 series titles. Cons: Not as many songs as in predecessor. Busy task with handling big combat party. Can't control characters in combat. Combat stupidly unbalanced and quite challenging compared to both predecessors; massive grind fest (esp. in last chapter). Party AI is bad half the times. Turn order is incomprehensible. Last chapter needs a walkthrough. Cheap as hell final boss.) --- * Decent: - Xuan-Yuan Sword: The Gate of Firmament (2015. Made by DOMO Production under Taiwanese firm, Softstar. Not erroneously Chinese as Erick thought and stated in video. But stories are Chinese focused with Chinese language options. Pros: Beautiful graphics. Interesting command-based, real time combat. Cons: Poor localizations. Awkward character animations. Can't control characters. Messy combat. Stupidly hard bosses that forces grinding.) - Final Fantasy XVI (Aka FF 16. At 13:54. 2023. Only covers the demo version. Pros: Erick liked this demo a lot. Mind-blowing graphics. Fine game with decent controls. Greatly enjoyable & damn good combat. Cons: Confusing story premise? Weird exploration with sluggish character movements. No customization for party members beside main character. Non playable side characters (they also can't level up either). Story mode is ridiculously easy (adventure mode is better). Bosses in adventure mode have too many HPs to drag out battles. QTEs are mainly for spectacle. BIG CON: Erick rightly says this is NOT Final Fantasy!) All in all, these were pretty great and well detailed reviews. We got to learn a lot about these games through your research.
Given the turn based combat, I think you'd actually like Baldurs Gate 3. Haven't watched your videos in a while (binging through them now) so idk if you e mentioned the game yet or not. But I'd love to hear your thoughts. I feel like it's similar to Yakuza 7 in that the turn based combat is incredibly well done and much more engaging than I initially thought. Plus there's at least one super hot waifu. Lol
Thanks for the video, Erick. I have Legend of Nayuta for the Playstation on order from Amazon, and am just waiting for it to ship. I may also pick up those two Rhapsody remasters, as they look fun, however I've never played the first game so I'm wondering if I should grab that as well to get the complete story? I have the Final Fantasy 16 demo downloaded to my PS5, but I've never gotten around to playing it. Looks "okay" as a pure action RPG, but I've not found my interest in it very high, and so it's just been sitting on my console untouched up to this point. Will probably give it a try someday.
Idk man, I really prefer turn-based JRPGs, but I highly enjoyed FF16, it has it’s flaws sure but the epic combat, music, and Clive’s performance really shown through for me.
@@szilvesztertoth1628 I've been playing FF my whole life, since the first. To me, it most certainly *is* Final Fantasy, because what makes FF FF is a lot more than "turn based combatz" or whatever. In fact, part of what makes FF FF is the fact that it reinvents itself and evolves over time. But the spirit of Final Fantasy remains, along with all the references, musical leitmotifs, etc. People can have their opinion, but my opinion is that the idea that 16 "isn't Final Fantasy" is small-minded and misunderstands not only the game itself but the series as a whole.
@@skahlan you are entitled to your opinion. It still won't change the facts that FF is not a simple button masher character action game. No matter the story or the characters. Changing the game fundamentally is not evolution lol.
You enjoyed having a gay character and him kissing another man? You enjoyed the completely non-RPG gameplay in this RPG series? You didn't mind the westernized art style and Game of Thrones rip-off story? It's a 2/10.
For me Final Fantasy stopped being Final Fantasy after 10. I kept giving them a shot all the way through 13, 13-II was the closest to being a FF Game again, but gave up after that. They are ashamed of FF being a JRPG and are desperate to turn it into ANYTHING else.
Lol you will not even give ff16 a fair shot. The full game is so much better than the demo. Honestly no final fantasy has been the same after ff6. It has been constantly evolving ever since that point. It is definitely an action game with rpg elements (this is the main thing that could’ve been improved on). Regardless of the combat system, it is definitely a final fantasy game. I loved it and I hope they just improve upon what they did this time around for the next game (ie better gearing system, permanent party members, less but better quality side quests). They do not need to do much changing to be honest, just those knit picks and they could have a masterpiece on their hands.
Yea his complaints were not a deal breaker. I enjoy the game and it's much better than the ones he put on this list. Sounds like he don't want to give it a fair chance.
I loved ff16. I was hooked on it from start to end and beat it in a few days. So I don't understand the hate, and these days I'm quite picky with my games. These others I'll have to play. I'm downloading Nayuta right now, actually, but I was playing sword and Fairy together forever, which is somewhat fun.
People just whining because it's not a traditional final fantasy even still it a been since 10 we had one. It's a great game and sounds like he already made up his mind he was not going like the game way before he play jt
@michikyah yep. I enjoyed the game n looking forward to dlc. No game has ever stay the same for a long period of time. Like just at zelda breath of the wild n tears of the kingdom is completely different than any zelda ever. Because of a much needed changed now its one of nintendo best selling franchise. All I heard from him it's not my final fantasy and not enjoy the game as is.
@michaelmacorso4479 yep. Even Mario games. People usually associate them with a jump/platform game with power-ups but there's many different gameplay styles for different Mario games. Are they going to say it doesn't feel like a Mario game because of this?
@Chronofantasyxpower I agree completely. Games series evolve and sometimes mechanics don't age well over the years. If he missed those games so much just played some indies rpgs if you want.
Waiting here for the english version of Nayuta on Steam. Completed it on PSP (using a fan translation) and it is on my top 5 games of all times. A truly complete RPG in all senses 😊
Are you going to talk about THE Remaster for the Switch!? Baten Kaitos I & II HD! I would've thought to see a video from you covering it when it came out last week.
Yeah, iv'e been told the identity of FF is not having an identity and change everytime. Complete lie, 'cause you can get better without doing a mario kart like game next, and they did just that from 1 to 10 no problem. Then they started to chase trends and ruin the context in wich they were improving title by title and everything started to fall apart. The comment about FF not having a personality or that FF is the only game where it doesn't matter how you play the damn game is a trap and it's cynical.
Was really hoping the FFXVI bit wasn't just going to get shit on like it was coming from someone bitter about not being given a free PS5 by Sony. But that's pretty much exactly what it was. Fun fact, and I'm using it because we're both Ys fans: FFXVI's Clive ISN'T DMC, or any of the other action RPGs people are defaulting to. It's the Dana segments from Ys VIII, arguably the BEST action RPG ever made. Particularly with the proper translation. Now here's the thing about it, and I REALLY want you and everyone with your opinion to think about this: FFVIII. X. XI. XII. XIV. XV. Funny how each of those games basically abandoned what FF was (which isn't the turn based game people thought it should have stayed, but a digital representation of table top RPGs, which means that as digital media evolves, it evolves. It ALWAYS did the most with it's combat and graphics and story that the system allowed it to. Table top RPGs ALWAYS have the player focus on a single character. ATB was introduced when systems could handle it. Now that systems are more powerful, it's even more real time based. Which was always the intention.) without fans acknowledging the base of FF. If you're out here, clinging to the days of FF being turn based because DQ was turn based.. play DQ instead. The day Square Enix was born was the day turn based FF died. Call me an asshole, I don't give a damn, because anyone reading this knows it's true. Like, if EA and Activision merged (god help us), Battlefield would be dead. Not the next year or the next decade. That. EXACT. Moment. If you want to blame anyone for the end of 'classic' FF, blame Enix. Sad to see that half of gamers aren't really putting those pieces together, but this elitist bullshit attitude towards gaming is why the niche games this channel covers will always be niche games for jaded, bitter, angry gamers that will rarely ever grow or expand their audience. Not because some of them don't deserve to. Divine Force is excellent. But because fans do everything to keep them small and niche and unsuccessful. It's just easier to maintain them because their budgets are small and their operating costs rarely ever expand. It's why Compile Heart, IF, and indie Octopath Traveler ripoffs always look like PS3 era titles. Minimal effort, buoyed by decent writing and cringe fourth wall breaking. Just another reminder that you, the gamer are in on the joke. You, the gamer, ARE the joke now though, and you'll hold on to the notion that a sexist, trope filled cast of all-white characters is the peak of game design. As long as there's jiggle physics and a wink-wink to the players, that shit will always find a market. Their audience might have peaked in high school, but hey. Those people are important too. Who else is going to rant on RUclips or make our fast food??
God thing you don't get to decide what Final Fantasy is. The game is fantastic. Also, while you recommend not choosing story mode, your footage shows you using at least one of the easy mode accessories 🙄
So you play the demo of Final Fantasy XVI, and treat it as a proper review, even giving people recommendations on whether they should buy the game full price, or wait for a discount? So far, so far so internet.
Lol. "Reviews" the game based off of a demo alone, admits he didn't play it, then goes on to say how it isn't Final Fantasy. I'm sorry man, but I think it's poor practice to make such statements about a game you played a fraction of. People shit on IGN and other major reviewers for reviewing games that they don't put much time into or finish. Idk. Gamers all over the world who played the OG FF over 30 yrs ago on the NES and have played each entry since were able to play FF16 and were pleasantly surprised at just how much it feels like Final Fantasy, how it IS Final Fantasy. I think it's fine to be sad that FF games aren't turn based like back in the day anymore, but to review something and speak so definitively about it after just a demo? It sort of makes it hard to take your reviews seriously after watching that.
Couldn't agree more about FFXVI...Is the game bad? No, of course not, but at the same time it lacks personality or originality, It's sad to see one of the greatest RPGs of all time become just a generic hack n' slash...
I just bought Rhapsody collection, looking forward to playing it nearly decades after I played the original game. As for FFXVI...wait until the price is $25 or below. I hate RPGs that advertise a party, but you can only control one character. The only game I didn't mind like that was Infinite Undiscovery.
I have never been a fan of FF, I found them very boring except for FFXI, FFXII, FFXIV (After Yoshi took the game but before he changed it to Realm Reborn) and MobiusFF. So I am glad they decided to make FFXVI more mature as it appeals to me more, the only reason I haven't purchase it yet is because I'm waiting for the PC release.
@@LoveJungle420 I do have noticed that 10-11 are the FF's that usually divide the fans, and honestly I could have liked FFIV, FFVI and FFIX but back then turn base combat was WAY too boring for me so I didn't play them. I do have read/heard the story of most FF's and I no longer dislike turn base combat, but many of the old games just don't do it for me anymore.
When somebody says that a single player 30 year old JRPG franchise's best game is the MMO spinoff, I put that opinion in the gutter straight away. Pure bullshit. That means you like MMOs more than normal single player JRPGs so your opinion is worthless about FF from the get go.
You are completely wrong about ff16 you didnt like the game ,so doesnt mean you can trash the story and get it wrong because you didnt like it your review on it was trash smh
FF XVI's combat was so boring. I literally did the exact same thing every fight. The story was good and the side quests did some great world building. That's about it
To me, Final Fantasy has always been about the characters, not the story. Most stories are either basic cliches or convoluted messes that send you to space for no reason, but whenever I remember epic moments about FF, I always remember the characters and a combat system that lets me relate and be part of those character's journeys is key. FFX had some great characters that I love to this day, but also had some heavy duds that I don't care for, and the number of characters I like have been declining every since and now I can't even play as them anymore, so... why should I even care for this game? Even Strangers of Paradise is great because the amazing and heavily customizable combat system is paired with an absolute weirdo! The story is actually the weak point of that game, I just wanted to see what else that lunatic was going to do next, that kept me engaged. The Devil May Clive combat system is just mediocre. It's a copy/paste of a tired formula that gets boring by the end of its original game, now we have it tacked on a game that is five times longer. Action games can have stories too and it lacks Role Playing elements to me, so I don't consider it an RPG to begin with, just a really long hack 'n slash. I've been passing less and less time with mainline FFs since X-2 and it's about time I skip one completely. Since spin-offs seems to be delivering stuff that better suits my tastes, I'll keep playing those and fullfill the wishes of that Yoshi dude that I don't care for and respectfully leave his franchise.
To me Final Fantasy is all about the exploration, customization, strategy, variety in enemies and cool dungeons. FF16 seems like soulless goyslop to me.
Final Fantasy XVI is the best game in the franchise, since the PS2. Yes even better than 7 remake imo. However it's not without its flaws. It is basically a reskinned DMC. Which is fine cause DMC has great gameplay. The problem is the length and the difficulty of the game. Where DMC is short sweet and challenging. FFXVI is long and easy. So you get tired of the combat before you're done. I finished it on normal did every bounty, didn't die once. Was never even close to dying. And some of the later game Eikons i didn't even use cause the first 2 you get are pretty much mandatory, so you only have room for 1 more.
Clive is the most generic name's protagonist ever in Final Dead Fantasy lmao, sounds like a name of western npc dude in MMO 😅, compared to previous title who had such a good name protagonist (Firion, Bartz, Squall, Tidus, Noctis, or even Balthier)
I really disliked FFXVI 🤷♂️ I accept that it’s a cliche at this point to dislike the latest entry in the series, but this is the first time I wasn’t able to finish a mainline entry - I just found it to be impossibly dull. I have no problem with story rich games, but after literal hours of watching static figures talking at one another about the plot I just stopped caring.
As opposed to? Most Jrpgs are like that, some even just have static 2d art? This is the best paced FF game with almost no exposition as you get the option to read everything with the active lore system. Before 16 final fantasy 9 was mu favorite and 16 was the only one that came close and even beating it for me in some aspects.
I mean that’s great 🤷♂️ I guess for me a game containing nothing but combat and dialogue wasn’t enough to stop it feeling repetitive …and I enjoyed Bayonetta, DMC series etc. but this was just the same thing every fight, no enemy except the bosses (sort of) required any kind of tactics or thought. In previous games, you have exploration, party management, mini games - there was always something to do to break the repetition, not in this one though…and I just thought the way the dialogue is delivered is awful, everyone is always pausing at the end of lines…everything takes so much longer than it needs to (I must have seen that stupid animation where Clive reaches in his pocket and then hands someone nothing 100 times 😂) it just was not for me, and that’s fine.
@@DawnRazor-wy8uv that’s a great point - one thing FFXVI does not do is respect your time, I would argue it goes out of its way to take up as much time as possible 😂 it’s a 30-40 hr game with about 15 good hours of content.
@@DawnRazor-wy8uv random encounters and griding. Boss battles that could take an hour long. Save points. And if you play an old jrpg because that respects your time, what are you playing? Mystic quest?
Saying ff16 is not an ff game is so disingenuous especially with not having played. Just about every aspect of the game outside of combat likens to old school ff more than any other game as of late.
@@countquackula8539 What's not true of what i said? Combat is literally the part of the game you'll spend the most time with. It's not the story cutscenes, it's the raw combat the part where you'll spend the most time in the game. And that's why for me combat make or break an rpg, on the same level as the story and the characters (btw hard to get attached to characters you never use because you only control one period) or even more. An rpg can have the most incredible story ever, but if you hate it's combat (50+ hours there potentially) you aren't going to enjoy the game.
I have my complaints on FF16, but it IS Final Fantasy. If you say so different, then you are just a closed minded old head that keeps hanging on Nostalgia.
@@ripbozo6780 exactly. People forget that FF is so many things to so many different people. Some just love it because of story and ost (thats why their orchestra has world tours performing the osts), but no. Spam square button til win bad, spam X button til win good. 😂
@@ripbozo6780 Couldn’t have said it better myself. Anyone that looks at that game and says to themselves it is a FF game should never be taken seriously.
You contradict so much of yourself on your thought on FF16. From what i’ve watched from you, i can assume youre a huge tales of fan, which has most of the things you complained about in all its games (ie: bosses tht take way too long to beat, action combat and all that.) And saying that it doesnt feel like a final fantasy game? Problem is you judged it just from the demo man. This is very much a final fantasy game. Epic graphics, 10/10 music, great story, great characters, bloody crystals as the main point of the story. This is both a throwback and new blood to the series. And saying this feels like a western rpg? Have you played western rpgs? 😂 this is is basically FFX exploration with DMC/Platinumgames combat, both very japanese. People complained back then with 12 for changing things up too much and now its a cult classic. Then square gave you guys 13, with ATB turn based combat and linear exploration, and it turned out shit. Final fantasy has always been Square’s flagship which competes with heavy hitters from all genres, thus it needs to evolve, thats the ethos of the series IMO. Ive been playing and loving jrpgs since the snes, and i have to say 16 is a tru Final Fanyasy game through and through. I mean the last actual turn based ff game was like what ff3 in all fairness? 7 remake was also full on action with linear exploration, same thing different theme. Now it just makes you look like a hater for no good reason, judging a game from a 2 hour demo. Give it a go and you’ll see just how much of a final fantasy game it is. :)
Final Fantasy 16 was so bad that Square Enix lost 2 billion dollars in value. Try and spin that into a positive. Final fantasy 16 is a bad game and there are numerous metrics to prove as much.
@@DawnRazor-wy8uv true. Neither does staying does same. I mean since ff2 the series has only evolved. From style to gameplay. I mean can you truly compare ff1, 7 and 12 lets say? Or ff 2, 8, 11? Or ff 3, 13 and 15? Get the point? And saying 16 is an objectively bad game means either someone has unbelieveable standards, or they just hating.
The problem with FFXVI is that there is nothing in it except the story (which is fine, good in parts even) and the combat…which personally I found dull and extremely repetitive. However, even if you like the combat, that’s it…there is nothing else in this game except combat; and listening to the story. The game sort of hints that you can explore areas, like in other FF games, but it’s a bit of a trick 😂 because there is no reason to do that, you will not find anything of use, to the point that even late in the game the devs seem to be actively trolling the player by putting a meaningless 20gil in chests etc…if you really love the combat in this game, then I guess you will have fun 🤷♂️ but you best really love it because you will be doing nothing else.
@@TheRealCaptainLavender that was a clickbait article manufactured to attract smooth brained Neanderthals like you. SE lost 2 billion because of Avengers and Forspoken actual bad games and failures. Twist it and spin it however you like that is objective truth that cannot be disproven. FF16 helped them make money and is a very well received game and a success by every metric conceivable. I really hope FF never goes back to turn base so you can keep crying into the void because nothing else will give your life any meaning.
Final Fantasy 16 is how the spinoffs should play. Even overlooking that, it indeed feels like a western game too, and also injects the west's obsession with gay characters. Pass.
Oh my God! Here we go again with the conservative anti-gay rhetoric. So idiotic. Gay people are real. They exist. There is no problem with having gay people in video games. I hear some games even have black people in them too. With that said, ff16 is still crap. But not because they have gay people in them. The fact that that bothers you is so backwater.
It's funny seeing people claim FF XVI doesn't count as an FF game when over time the series has always changed and innovated even if you ignore graphics playing FF IV and then playing FF VIII feels like two different series outside of the few references. They don't just keep making old school FF games over and over the series that has done that is DQ not FF. Shit this might be the most similar to the older FF games ever outside of combat system, it's set in medieval times and there isn't a ton of fancy technology around.
Ya, for the most part the only thing that ties all the FF games together is that crystals are used as a big driving force for the plot in 90% of the games (FF2 and 8 may have stories where the crystal(s) role is a bit more minimal and that's about it). Besides that gameplay wise they change something up drastically as far bas as FF2 from 1 (in this case it'd be giving characters actual personalities/histories in 2 whereas 1 they were just known by their role and were more of a player stand in avatar than anything). 4 started ATB and later games added their own new systems such as summons/job system before XII went with a new combat system (though for one of the previous games they went back to classic non ATB turn based before that for one game) that's similar to MMO style of combat. 13's ATB system feels quite different than any other ATB system, 14 was a MMO, 15 went action and open world (and was shit in the end), and 16 went action but went with smaller field maps instead of open world and has a vastly better action combat system than XV. And if we go by setting the series has been drastically different/shifting like crazy from medieval to sci -fi to medieval again and so on which makes it feel even more inconsistent as a series imo than even the changes to combat. If someone gonna complain about a FF game that should no longer be considered a FF game than it should've been 7 first and foremost as the change in setting drastically changed the vibe of the series as a whole imo.
Nope, FF mainline games were always some form of turn-based until FF15. And all of them were very Japanese in style until FF16. Enjoy your gay character and his kiss scene in your Game of Thrones rip-off DMC clone. I'll pass like most people did, it's a flop.
Final fantasy 13 was action as well. but I agree that the majority of older final fantasy games were turn based rpgs. to me the new final fantasy games is more of a hack and slash
@@hongluong3427 No, FF13, similar to FF12, was not action. It was a fast-paced turn-based combat system but that's not action. You don't control your character's movements or dodge or anything, not even timed button prompts like Mario RPG.
Well, I say it again. They should just have sold that game as something else. If they would have created a new brand (maybe even with the subtitle "inspired by Final Fantasy") this wouldn't have been too bad. I mean, most SE ARPGs are mediocre and interchangeable but decent and can be fun. They just should put the brand "Final Fantasy" to rest, if they don't care about its quality anymore. I mean, most "modern" gamers like playing that kind of games and they would buy it even if it had a different name. Older players who liked the FF games from the PS1/PS2 era are in the vast minority of people who actually buy this anyways.
You are missing out on a decent mature FF without all those crazy or cute characters (I hate caith Sith so much) and wasting your time with Loli games instead :P It is way better than FFXV or God of War for that matter. I do agree SE should surprise us with something more like FFX with a world map instead of chasing it's own tail, but that is when Sakaguchi left, a Lost Odyssey sequel would be more like old FF.
Final Fantasy 15. Was a better game than Final Fantasy 16. There was such an outrageous amount of love for the series. Evident love in so many ways that I can point out. From Ignis (I think) humming the FF battle music at the end of some fights, to being able to buy like 30 different soundtracks from every final fantasy game in existence and other games. And it wasn't just a trend chasing game. It did something really cool with the franchise. Sure it's divisive but it did a hell of a lot right. I could spend hours just listening to Spotify and fishing. And the road trips were so awesome. Sure, chapter 13 sucked but they did improve it. They did make the game a lot better with the royal edition. And the different upgrades that came with the regalia freaking awesome. Not to mention all those cool recipes you could discover. Final Fantasy 15 to me stomped Final Fantasy 16's ass. I know that's a take. A lot of people on here won't agree with but you know what?
Dude don't bother playing FF16. You're obviously a JRPG fan and that games is not a RPG. You liked the demo because you played just a few hours, the game is so repetitive, no customisation at all, towns suck (Towns!)... etc, etc
To be honest I deleted Final Fantasy 16 right away after playing it for some few hours and even hid the trophies from the people on my friendslist because I was too embarrassed that I fell for the aggressive marketing. 🎉
I hate this idea that FF has to be a copy cat of 4-9 or it "doesn't count" when in reality FFXVI had what made every good FF game fun to play. Great story, great cast of characters, great music. I have NEVER played any FF game or any RPG for the combat, world map, or party system. Those can be good but are not necessary to make an RPG an RPG. XVI also held true to the lore of the series. I mean I would argue that people who claim this "isn't a FF game" are not really fans of FF as much as they are fans of turn based games from the 90s and early 2000s. Plenty of those games exist just gotta branch out beyond FF. I love the action trend. I still think 7R has set the standard tho for combat and story pacing. Not just for FF but for JRPGs in general.
I agree on one thing, sadly FF7 remake kept the standard (started with XV) of this hack and slash crap. Personally ff as an ip has been dead since the release of XIII, the start of it's downfall. I'm happy you still enjoy it, myself and many others have moved away for better rpgs.
@@DMaster8686 I like action combat. In fact, I favor it over turn based at this point because after years of avoiding it, I finally played a few soulslikes, got good, and now they are all really fun instead of annoyingly hard. For hack and slash to be fun you have to think and act accordingly. When it finally clicks its like you are swinging the sword, blocking, parrying, and dodging yourself and it feels very rewarding. Don't get me wrong I still enjoy turn based, playing Yakuza Like a Dragon for the first time right now and absolutely loving it, but man I do love those action games too. I feel like I wish more people would be open to maybe branching out beyond their comfort zones from time to time because I swore I never would enjoy FPS games either but then Fallout 3 and Bioshock happened and now I feel like I have a great balance of gaming to experience and enjoy. Love me some racing games, third person adventure, metroidvanias, and platformers too. My question to people that only want turn based for this series is why? When I was kid playing turn based combat and random battles I was dreaming of FF being like what 7R and 16 just delivered so its weird to me to see the people I grew up with or slightly younger be the old man yelling at the sky about how "the REAL FF games were back in MY day". Just glad I am keeping up with and evolving with the times instead of fighting against them so much. i feel like that desperation to cling to nostalgia is a problem in every aspect of human civilization right now really.
@@NeutralGloomBot "Evolving"? Are you by chance implying that turn based rpgs are a relic of the past or some sht of this kind? Because you are absolutely wrong. Pokemon, Persona, Dragon Quest, etc... wants a word with you if you think that way.
@@DMaster8686 I guess you just decided to skip the part where I highly praised turn based game to go right into the "he said action good so RAGE MODE" BS, huh? No you silly goose. What I meant by "evolving" with the times is not throwing a fit because one series did something different, especially when like you just listed PLENTY of turn based games still exist. I just find the "wah wah not turn based" melt down for FF games to be a bit, what's the word, oh yeah. Pathetic. Is that more clear?
Who said it has to be a copy cat of 4-9? First, it should be a JRPG not a character action game. When that box is checked, then we can talk about the rest... :D
In conclusion you don’t know anything about Final Fantasy since the main line games have been changing since the very first game. Is incredible how people define JRPG only based on “it’s has to be turn based”
It has to be 4 dudes in a row. Never then less. Final Fantasy had often these problems, that people from earlier entries called the next Final Fantasy not a 'real' Final Fantasy.
Saying a youtuber with hundreds of JRPG under his belt "don't know anything about Final Fantasy" (fyi FF is the most popular JRPG out there) is kinda a dumb statement

That's a shame that you can't control your other party members in FFXVI. From the Ys-like UI, I thought it would be a super party-based ARPG where every character has unique abilities, like Xenoblade or modern Ys. Not sure why they didn't do that.
They were probably trying to be more like the older ys games, but the enemies feel too dmg spongey for that.
Still fun thou so.

But the spirit of Final Fantasy remains, along with all the references, musical leitmotifs, etc. People can have their opinion, but my opinion is that the idea that 16 "isn't Final Fantasy" is small-minded and misunderstands not only the game itself but the series as a whole.

FFXVI's Clive ISN'T DMC, or any of the other action RPGs people are defaulting to.
It's the Dana segments from Ys VIII, arguably the BEST action RPG ever made. Particularly with the proper translation.

FFVIII. X. XI. XII. XIV.

I really enjoyed FF16, really hated the ending though
Did you try the star ocean 2 demo? The graphics are breathtaking. I highly recommend and can't wait for the full game
@@DawnRazor-wy8uv Ah yes respecting your time by making you read dialogue for 10-15m before you can actually play the game
@@DawnRazor-wy8uv random encounters and griding. Boss battles that could take an hour long. Save points. And if you play an old jrpg because that respects your time, what are you playing? Mystic quest?
No final fantasy. Come on man. Don't know what have you been playing all these years
Final fantasy has turned to absolute shit. It doesnt deserve it
Exactly! I finished FFXVI and it is a good action rpg, but a terrible Final Fantasy.
Saying ff16 is not an ff game is so disingenuous especially with not having played. Just about every aspect of the game outside of combat likens to old school ff more than any other game as of late.
False
@@countquackula8539ok boomer
You mean outside of the aspect of the game that you will play for the vast majority of the time? Well damn...
@DMaster8686 That's not true. FF7 Remake Intergrade is a mix of old and new. FF16 is zoomer version of FF.
Ff16 was great and its already on sale $15 off
FF16 is a Final Fantasy game, just not a good one, and it shouldn't have been a mainline entry.
I have my complaints on FF16, but it IS Final Fantasy. If you say so different, then you are just a closed minded old head that keeps hanging on Nostalgia.
Good words for lobotomized teenager.

Final Fantasy has never been the same ever game and 16 is one of the best game of this generation
That's just not true. FF has had a similar feel and combat for at least the first 10 games. Although ff8 was a little bit different.
FF16 wins as most boring FF game.
Totally agree 👏
Nothing can be more boring than 13 trilogy and 15
@sharebear421 I agree those weren't great either. The only FF I care about right now is FF7 Remake and Rebirth.
@@countquackula8539those and tactics should be getting a remaster similar to tactics ogre. Hope they don’t botch it
@sharebear421 Yeah, I'm hyped for tactics, too. When is that one coming out?
You contradict so much of yourself on your thought on FF16. From what i’ve watched from you, i can assume youre a huge tales of fan, which has most of the things you complained about in all its games (ie: bosses tht take way too long to beat, action combat and all that.)
And saying that it doesnt feel like a final fantasy game?
@@TheRealCaptainLavender sure, did you even read the Article on that or just the headline?
FF XVI ISNT AN RPG
Definition of an J-RPG, please… whining kid
100% true.
Ai slop thumbnail.
Repeat: This IS NOT A FINAL FANTASY GAME😄

Dude don't bother playing FF16. You're obviously a JRPG fan and that games is not a RPG. You liked the demo because you played just a few hours, the game is so repetitive, no customisation at all, towns suck (Towns!)... etc, etc
To be honest I deleted Final Fantasy 16 right away after playing it for some few hours and even hid the trophies from the people on my friendslist because I was too embarrassed that I fell for the aggressive marketing. 🎉
gatekeeping nostalgic gamers be whining like "this is not my franchise anymore"...
Is incredible how people define JRPG only based on “it’s has to be turn based”
Did you wake up in the morning and decided to write the dumbest comment ever under Erick's video? Well done.

TL;DW list:
* Good:
- The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails (First 2012 Japanese only PSP release. Worldwide multi platform release in 2023. Spinoff of Trails series.
Pros: Looks fantastic, good story. Decent gameplay. Remaster fixes many balance issues. Decent combat. Friendly interface.
Cons: Bad shopping. Platforming sometimes frustrating. Combat not as great as Ys games (but still decent). Extremely frustrating bosses.)
- Rhapsody II: Ballad of the Little Princess (Original Japanese only 1999 PS1 title. Later Asian only multi platform releases. 2023 worldwide PC release. Also part of 2023 US pack 'Marl Kingdom Chronicles' on Switch, PS5 & PC.
Pros: Beautiful, cutesy pixel art. Decent English dub. Silly but charming songs. Good, quick interface. Addictive & fun game. Great humour. Better than 1st series title.
Cons: High encounter rate. Easy game.)
- Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom (Original Japanese only 2000 PS2 title.
Cheap as hell final boss.)

* Decent:
- Xuan-Yuan Sword: The Gate of Firmament (2015. Made by DOMO Production under Taiwanese firm, Softstar. Not erroneously Chinese as Erick thought and stated in video. But stories are Chinese focused with Chinese language options.
Pros: Beautiful graphics. Interesting command-based, real time combat.
Cons: Poor localizations. Awkward character animations. Can't control characters. Messy combat. Stupidly hard bosses that force grinding.)
- Final Fantasy XVI (Aka FF 16. At 13:54.
BIG CON: Erick rightly says this is NOT Final Fantasy!)
