I've always loved this song, and even got to hear Michael Stipe sing it in his prime-just masterful. I known this song since it was released, but don't perform it often. I think it's a hard place to go for me, lyrically. I just feel this weight from all the sadness/darkness in the world, and all the great people we've lost who were overcome with and consumed by it. I dedicate this song to three incredible vocal talents we've lost way too soon: Brad Delp, Chris Cornell, and Chester Bennington.
Sorry to get personal for a moment, but I'm no stranger to dark days. We've all had them. Some we bring upon ourselves, some just seem like random cruelty undeserved. When you're in the grips of depression, the darkness of those days and nights can seem inescapable. Sometimes the darkness seems to magnifies our own "glaring" flaws we can't but help focus on. I truly believe that God (or "life", if you prefer) will not give us more than we can handle, but will always provide a way to survive our worst times, and even help us evolve in our compassion in the process. And yes, we can make our own burdens heavier by the way we choose to react to them, whether through active or passive means. But that's no reason to beat ourselves up. As long as there's another tomorrow, there's always hope. We just need to make sure there's a tomorrow. We owe ourselves that opportunity, and we owe those who love us that hope. Like the song says, everybody hurts. You're not alone. Hold on.

a year and a half ago i tried to end my life . i flatlined . the doctor brought me back . i have mental illness and most dont believe its real . well , it is . a few months later i was looking for a cover song of ¨africa ¨ . i discovered mike that day . i was blown away ! i write and play guitar and i caught a glimmer of hope . if mike could sing that to perfection , surely i could pick up the guitar again . God had a plan for me and still does . thanks Mike for your brilliant talent . this song is a song i listen to all the time . once again , your annoying fan .... scott . i need to make a t-shirt that says mike masses annoying fan !!! hahaha !! no , he is not louis c.k........

I ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE this sounds even better when you hear Mike and Jeff sing it live, and this is damned near perfection.
I was privileged to hear them perform this at the 229 Venue in London last April.
It was jaw droppingly good.
Hey brother I want to thank you for covering this song. I won't go into much detail but in 2006 I was injured in a freak accident and back was broken. At the time i was bouncing for several clubs, training for pro wresting, drummer of a band for 11 years and working in prison. So long story short I became very depressed at the thought of losing all of that and being told I would not walk again. I made two attempts but thankfully I lost the nerve. But today I am walking and have a full life still deal with pain but I am alive and I am very grateful.

I have been following Mike and Jeff for almost 10 years,.. some of their very best performances are their videos posted from as far back as 15 years ago at the Pizzeria in SLC. They would get this back of the room corner booth that gave the the space out of the way to set up the video camera , they would meet once a month on Wednesdays to practice and perform live. When you would see people pass in front of the camera, it was because the location was close to the bathroom. It was a place close to the college and kids there were more focused on getting pizza. It was never advertised that they were a music artists giving a performance. They were just practicing and honing their skills and managed to make the videos to get posted on RUclips. 10 years ago they had less than 30K followers now well over 400K.
Some interesting background info on Mike and Jeff, both have law degrees, Mike was a public defender and Jeff a county prosecutor in SLC, for the daily jobs and livelihoods. After playing and gaining ground in the music business, Mike moved to Denver, and gave up day job for music full time then started booking performances all over the country and the world, in what would be considered smaller venues.
Their covers on so many iconic songs, are nothing short of mind blowing, spot on perfection in vocals and incredible level of guitar talent.
I am in love with this mans voice. Utterly fantastic, both of them.

Never has a voice fit a cover this well before.
I've seen a lot of Mike's videos, but I hadn't seen this one before. I watched the amazing Stairway to Heaven with Jeff last week when it was released and, after watching that, this one appeared in my "up next" list. I'm glad it did, because this is awesome. There is something special going on with Mike and Jeff. All of Mike's performances are good but his best ones, in my opinion, are with Jeff. You guys should do an album together.

my life has been messed up for awhile now so i understand . i tried to take my life over a year and a half ago . obviously , i survived but my depression is horrible lately . i even lashed out at mike and never meant to . he is great but mental illness controls my life . i have 3 people in my life who care but dont understand . im ready to give up but i cant . i dont know why . you are not alone Kieran . i know how it feels . although , we still feel alone because the ones who understand , never live close to us . sleeping is my peace . its the only happiness i have......

Such beautifully performed vocals and spot on instrumentals. This rendition of REM's Everybody Hurts, easily matches if not exceeds the original,.. its washes over me and penetrates those places deep within. Again another cover and performance by Mike and Jeff that is nothing short of perfection.

Its really good to see more attention being given to depression and the overall mental "well being" of people in todays society.
God knows with everything society has to deal with, "Everybody Hurts" at one time or another.
Those that seem perfectly fine on the "outside" are sometimes the one's that may struggle the worst.
With that said, if we can just slow down and take the time to ask the simple question, "is everything ok?", to even our closest friends, that may be all it takes to spark a conversation to possibly save their life as well as save their family and friends from dealing with the loss of their loved one.
