I was very pleased to have called Robert Douglas (Duke de Lorca) my friend for the last fifteen years of his life (he died at age 89 in 1999). He had a full career first as a film actor and later a TV Director primarily for Quinn Martin Productions. A lovely , vibrant man who enjoyed a hearty laugh and a cold beer. RIP!
@@Mr_Kenneth. A good means he is able to recreate both, good and bad guys. He was good in this film but somehow I have not seen him yet in any other movies.
Errol Flynn was a great actor and swordsman, but I always thought Basil Rathbone was better as a ‘swashbuckler’ type actor in the golden age of movies as he was an olympic swordsman and Shakespearian actor as well. You can’t go wrong chosing a movie with both Errol and Basil in it.
@@malafakka8530 Both Basil Rathbone, and Tyrone Power were excellent fencers. One of the best cinema sword fights is considered to be that between Stewart Granger and Mel Ferrer in the finale of the 1952 'Scaramouche'.
Fencing in a competition is bad enough. But when you have to train, rehearse a remember every cut and thrust in a 3-5 minute scene, it's twice as difficult.
As a foreigner I only heard of Don Juan (some would say Don Giovanni)'s notorious reputation as a ladies' man, but this film made me the first time to actually see the character. Great acting, Errol Flynn! =)
Apparently, when Flynn was a very young man, he had malaria, and the effecs of it plagued him for the rest of his life. Also, he did lead a rather dissilute existence. Still what a swashbuckler! I adore all of his movies, and have since I was a little kid.
Erroll actually had deep medical problems with his heart. He even fainted on set at one other time during filming. Finally he passed away due to heart attack in 1959 in Vancouver, BC.
This is a very under-rated Errol Flynn film, it's just as entertaining as his earlier films and the fact that he is getting on a bit suits the character of Don Juan.
The leap you wrote of is incredible, but the actual leap wasn't Flynn but stuntman/actor Jock Mahoney. This can be verified, just check it out. That's not to shortchange Flynn, who was top notch in this under rated film!
@@AladdinSaneNYC I thought as much ! But I expected to see a lot more stunt doubling for Flynn which there isn’t. There’s no crafty shying away from shots of the swordplay - like you I’m amazingly impressed that Flynn’s swordplay was still so quick and deft, even at this stage when he can’t have been in top shape and he hadn’t done a swashbuckler for quite a few years

there are only a handful of really good on screen sword fights and this is one of them (most are Flynn movies) - the Tyrone Power version of Zorro has an excellent sword fight too this film has loads of great action - a personal favorite along with Sea Hawk and Robin Hood - Errol Flynn - King of the Swashbucklers!
Black Sails (very recent) and Pirates of the Caribbean are the best modern on screen sword fights. They don't often do it like they used to when actors actually knew how to fence
I go with the Tyrone Power-Basil Rathbone duel in "The Mark Of Zorro". The frequent clattering of the epees was so spectacular, the sequence didn't require any musical accompaniment!
So many people say that Errol was past it in this film, and although he definitely looks older than his 39 years, he was still so very sexy. Such a great duelling scene!
As a qualified Fencing Instuctress, rest assured that this combat is both meticulous and accurate in its depiction of movement of the rapiers!!Unlike today's blusterers whom can talk an intention but cannot deliver the swordsmanship!!
A much under-rated movie, one of director George Sherman`s best and certainly Flynn`s last great swashbuckler for his old studio. The info under the title says the villain is Douglas Kennedy but this is not correct - it is Robert Douglas, Britain`s best costume villain of the early 1950s (and also a splendid Black Michael opposite James Mason in the remake of the Prisoner of Zenda).
Flynn was only 37 when this was made. The first of his scenes shot was the final one, where he looks considerably better. Apparently his latest movie had got bad reviews and he drank during the rest of the production as a result. It's not a bad film at all, but it isn't up to the standard of 'Captain Blood', 'The Sea Hawk', or 'T.A.O.R.H.', apart from Steiner's music, the photography and some of the sets. It's fun, but not the kind of genuinely memorable films I mentioned. Flynn and Fairbanks are still the two great swashbucklers (no disrespect meant to the other actors who have appeared in this kind of film - as good as they were at times, both Flynn and Fairbanks had something unique).
@@swordfightsgalore2321 if you check all of the sequences you can see Robert Douglas in every part of sword duel, Cavens supports him during the filming but he did'nt double Douglas... is the evidence of the images ... @LaMarrClemons your right it was Jock Mahoney that did the stunt and was the only stuntman prepared to do the dangerous leap and demanded $1000 to do it. If you play it in slow motion you see how stunning it is more than in real time. Jock went on to be the star of two western tv series, one Range Rider seem to recall had a unique way of mounting his horse(bit of a stunt) and as Tarzan in two film.

Indeed, Truly Flynn died far too young, he was only 50, the sad thing is, he brought it on himself with his alcohol abuse, some of it stemmed from his youthful adventures too, upon autopsy, the cause of death was to do with his heart but his other organs were all banged up and diseased too, he was a walking time bomb, 'tis truly a sad affair.
