It reminded me of when we painted with Max and Irwin ( great painter also) in the mornings at A&D on 57th street and 2nd avenue. Only a few would know what I mean. Steve, Gus (who now teaches at art students league) and a few other would be there also. What an experience that was. I was so fortunate and learned so much from Max and Irwin. I would copy them brush stroke for brush stroke, always sitting behind them. In my last year there I had both Irwin Greenberg and Max Gins Ginsburg as my art teachers beside doing the morning painting group. I learned so much. I still set my pallet up as i was taught by them. That experience was a once in a life time thing to have them both in the same place and as teacher before Pratt along with students of the caliber of Gus, Steve and others. We were all in competition with each other and struggling to define our own styles. It truly was a once in a life time moment.
I was also part of “ the old hat club” class of ‘85 from A & D. Great memories that I will cherish forever. I still have a painting Max did of me when I was the model for the week.
Question: how thin/thick was the paint for the part of stablishing the first shades? Like right before he adds the titanium white+ cadmiun red on the forehead, and how fast does it dry? should I feel it dry or still quite wet?
I think you can. You just have to know that acrylics dry faster. Also the end look isn't going to look exactly like oil, which can look more smooth and vivid.
He mentions toning the canvas before starting to paint. Did he tone this canvas? I know that it can be difficult to describe what you are doing as you do it, and here is a good example. Maybe it’s too much to ask for a person who expresses himself visually to be verbally articulate. What is a toned canvas and why use one? A toned canvas is a canvas that has been covered with a thin coat of color. The color should not be very dark or very light but somewhere in between....a mid-tone. When the surface you are painting on is thus toned, you are able to add both light paint and dark paint to it and see clearly how those two values ( light and dark ) relate to each other and to the mid tone or middle value that you are painting on. It isn’t necessary to tone every canvas but many artist prefer to do it. This demonstration is problematic in the same way many other painting demonstrations are.... We don’t see the model from the same angle that the artist sees it so we don’t get to see why he does what he does on the canvas. This might be logistically impossible to do. But a photo of the model seen from the correct angle could be inserted into the bottom left corner of the scene.
Thank you Max. It was an honour to sit for you :) I learned so much just listening
Wooow . I didn't expect this kind of depiction from this guy! Lovely explanations!

Did they start you guys off with a limited palette? like a zorn type of palette for a while?
I studied with him and Mr
.Greenburg at Art&Design High School..
These two teachers perfected the warm up sketches with their ink pens!

can you use acrylics for this technique?
+valerie Potter off course you can,,and today they have the water soluble oils.
Thank you. Yes I have tried the WS oils I guess I'm more comfortable with acrylics at this point anyway
OH ok thank you . Very nice done

and Acrylics dry a little darker too.
I want to do lincoln in a 3/4 view.
I find the ginsberg demo very hard to listen to as the sounds of his voice is very muffled and distorted .Can this be improved?
+Frank Holmes using head/earphones improve it
How do you sketch?
You just look at the basics
***** Oh
But I don't get the techniques
How do you know what to do next?
What are the principles?
***** Oh
Thanks
I don't know the skills at all, I want to learn
What kind of surface are you painting on?
I took Max's class in NY and he painted on masonite (with Gesso)
What does he mean by 'turpenoid' or 'terpenoid'? Does it mean OMS = odorless mineral spirit?
Turpenoid is an odorless 'version' of mineral spirits. OMG actually has an odor. Turpenoid, made by the Weber company, is completely odorless.
very nice
SuperMax!
