The US military uses football game flyovers as practice for their pilots to show they can be on a target on at an exact time. Hence, flyovers happen at stadiums across the US. For fans, it's a morale boost. For the military, it's a practice exercise. There is an air force base 45 minutes from our stadium. We had six home games. We had 5 flyovers this season. We also have the US's largest army training facilities in my city so we have a salute to the troops game each season. A lot of troops get to attend and there is a show at halftime of the game.

The weekend off is randomly chosen. There are post season "bowl" games (such as the Sugar Bowl), and some of them are part of the college football championship series.
Most games are pretty much always like this, there are 12 games in a season and then conference championship games for the top teams after the regular season. Remember band and cheerleading is considered their sport too and they want to play their own sport as well. Cheer squads and bands also have their own competitions and many cheerleaders etc are there on scholarships as well. There is Cheer Team, Dance Team and Drill Squad that all look like cheerleaders for people who don’t know. The Pom poms and girls being carried are the cheerleaders.
Love cheerleaders and the band! Got to watch my Carolina (SC is Carolina!!! :P )band march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! We made sure to be up and watch both that and their prior appearance on the Today Show. Bands, dance teams, cheer teams, etc are all a big deal unto themselves. It is an interesting history to look into and see how both changed over the years.
Interestingly, the University of Texas's oldest rival is Texas A&M University (since 1893). They are the only universities whose fight songs start off talking about the other university. They resumed their rivalry after a 13-year hiatus (long story).

And for many of us we have to drive multiple hours to attend a professional sports team's game. College and universities are near by so easier to support. And for most, we start going or watching games very young. I was born in the summer (80s) and in the football stadium in the fall. My family has had season football tickets to our team since the 1970s. We shun weddings held in the fall! College football is on the scale in the US of most professional sports in other countries. It is big throughout the US, but massive in the southern states. College sports gave a lot of southerners that identity and competition post-Civil War era they wanted. Also there are 774 colleges and universities that offer football. They are divided into divisions mainly by the amount and type of scholarships they offer for their players. Texas and Georgia play at the top level where the majority of the money in the sport is found. At the lowest level (D3) of college football, the players play for the love of the game and receive no scholarships to pay for their education. At the level (D1 FBS) Texas, Georgia, and other play you can have 85 scholarship players (changes to 105 in 2025-2026 season). With recent changes to the laws that govern the sport, these players can now earn money off their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). Before it was illegal for a player to be paid for signing a football, taking money to endorse a car, restaurant, store, etc and so on. Now these players can sign contracts to stay at a school and are guaranteed to be paid a certain amount of money. Some of these players are making thousands of dollars and others millions of dollars. So fans pour money into organizations called collectives to raise money to keep their current players and help recruit high school players and players transferring from other schools. As you can see Texas has lots of money as it has a large fan base and lots of alumni. There are fans of these schools that did not graduate from the school. They purchase season tickets and attend games. I look at it as if the fans of a professional team were able to directly influence who their teams signed by the money they gave. College sports in the US took a major turn with the introduction of NIL because for decades players had been given money secretly to go play at schools. Fans and other people who donated found ways to get that money without the officials knowing. When those people were caught at times it made the news. Look up "SMU Death Penalty". That's Southern Methodist University and the "Death Penalty" out of the scandal was essentially the end of their football program at the time (They made the playoffs this year!). In terms of games, most teams get anywhere from 5 to 8 home games in their own stadium a year. The season's schedule is normally determined around December the year prior or January of that year. Sometimes, two schools in different conferences (leagues) from one another will sign an agreement to play each other. A normal college football schedule consists of 8-9 conference games and 3-4 non-conference games. The college football regular season is typically played between the last Saturday in August and the last week of November so fans really value the home games. As we remind the kids that are fans, enjoy it because it comes and goes quickly. You make friends that last a lifetime tailgating, cheering in the game, heck even walking to your seat. It's a huge social gathering. A college football game can for one day make a city/town the largest one in its state with all the people coming in. I am a University of South Carolina Gamecock fan. Our stadium has a capacity of 77,000+. It has been renovated over the past 25+ years and gone down from holding 85,000+ to 77,000+. I do not miss a home game and haven't since I was a child. You value each individual game. Those of us diehard college football fans spend tons of time talking about the game. We sit on forums discussing possible recruits to our programs, coaching hires, other teams, etc. It's a niche sport on a massive level. If you're ever State side during college football season and in the South let us know! Can always find a ticket. Food and drink is always plentiful. And plenty of friendly faces to see a first American college football game at.
