A great video ...with screw ups you always learn more. I have had about 12 years since I did a lot to command line work ( retired) this refresh helped a lot lsd was a bonus!
Debian is my Linux distro, I’ve been using it on my home computer since around 1998. I use NetBSD for an old Sun sparc64 I enjoy fooling around with. I have a dual boot laptop to test different Linux distros when I see or hear of one that seems interesting. For work, we have Windows. But that’s out of my hands.
Phew! The Exorcist film has nothing on this video! My dog Boo was so terrified, he had to watch your video from behind the sofa! The terror, or should I say, the horror? Oh mama!
Don't let the entry for the root account empty! You will discover that it is very helpful to be root when the system has crashed and you want to enter via secure boot (or what the hell it is called). In this case the system wants to start a root shell and it is a pain in the rear when there is no root.
Agreed. I'll have to go back and look at the live streams. I'm only just getting into Linux and approaching Nix OS is probably beyond my skillset but for some reason I like the idea of config and rollback
29:24 Do you have a video on how to accomplish that? I was unsuccessful in my last attempt with having an encrypted boot in root (/) with UEFI. I've also heard this can cause issues with Grub after some system updates.
debian’s default /etc/x11/xsession runs /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator if no argument is given and no WM could be found. it’s handled by update-alternatives and was probably linked to kitty during the installation
I do wonder how long Debian will last on Chris's production machine? I do wonder if Chris understands the meaning of a stable deployment of Linux on a production machine.
I did not read that into his comment. I read it knowing Chris likes rolling distros and likes to be more towards the cutting edge. The fact that Chris is installing a "stable" OS shows how highly he thinks of Debian.
Man this video made me so hungry. But then again, this is linux and this is why we crazy people love it so much. So Chris, the pizza is not on you. We cool. x'D Btw did anyone notice that Elgato and Debian logo are so similar. Hmm... 🤔
@21:00 I run 6 to 12 drives in a system and have not seen the Fedora Partition mess it up in over a decade, with a combination of BTRFS, EFI, EXT3/4/ FAT32/ and NTFS each mounted to different points while being in an LVM. I would like to see an actual example of what breaks. BTW switching to Debian 12 after Red Hat becoming increasingly unreliable.
What I dont get is, why did you compile and install instead of using the package manager? Everytime I did this to force an install it wound up breaking my system.
Hey, I know this isn't the right place to ask how to resolve errors but I'm getting no documentation on it so pls bear with me. I'm currently trying to install debian 12 on my system, dual boot. I go through the installation setup my manual disks and all but at the last it tells didn't find Linux kernel on apt or something. It gives opt. to abort the installation or go without kernel. I go without the kernel then it throws error: fclose:no space left on device libkmod:k_mod_module_new_from_loaded:could not open proc/modules:no such file or directory Error:could not get list of modules:no such file or directory Plss help and thanks for bearing with me
lol, damn dude. That is a curse. Those display issues remind me of the 'good' old days when we used to have to write X config files by hand and jump through a whole lot of other issues just to get a working system and you couldn't even get a tty for a while there....
@TitusTechTalk. I applaud your choice of Debian with dwm. I have been using it for years at this point and it is fantastic. Super light, fast, and stable.

Is there an actual functional setup script along with a cohesive video that isn't assuming prior knowledge of any custom mounts or files that the consumer may not have already? Watched the whole video multiple times (skipping the shenanigans) and still unable to see this in action for a daily driver. Edit: dwm wasn't in the script and I couldn't get autologin to operate or the theme to show up but I did get everything somewhat running, just have to read more to tweak it.
I'm loving debian 12. Been using it for about 10 days. 2 problems I'm having. I set it to never power off or sleep and just shut off my monitor power. It worked this way with Ubuntu for the passed 7 years. Now if I shut my monitor off then power it back up I get no signal. I have to hit the power button(sleep) wait a few seconds. Then power back on. Problem 2 not as important but I cannot get OpenVPN3 to install. Other than those 2 bugaboos I really like debian 12. Seems snappy and more responsive than my previous OS (ubuntu 20.04).
Hey @ChrisTechTalk did you ever loose any of the contents of your home folder while trying to format your system before? And what do you use for your backups? Local?
There is no need for extra boot partition in fedora, i always install with only one efi boot partition but if you install nobara with calamares than it requires extra boot partition or it will setup the partition automatically
