This was most certainly one of my favourite videos to make, as the 717 has always been a favourite aircraft of mine! Make sure to watch to the end to find out the TRUTH on the retirement rumours, and if they should be true or not!
It was in August of 1987 that I took my very first flight. It was on a Delta Airlines MD-80 to San Diego, then to Honolulu on a Delta L-1011. I fell in love with the MD-80 aircraft! (As well for the L-1011). Then in 1993, I flew on a Northwest Airlines DC-9 to BWI that was manufactured in 1968! Such memories. I later got to fly on the B717/MD95 with Hawaiian Airlines from the big island to Kauai. After we took off, I could see the entire Hawaiian islands chain from my window. These workhorses made all of that possible. I am so happy that you got to experience some McDonnell Douglas history first hand. I hope they continue flying these beautiful birds for years to come. ❤️✈️🙏🏻
I am happy to say that I fly the 717 between Minneapolis, MN (MSP) and Charlotte NC (CLT) several times a year. In fact, what a coincidence: I flew out MSP - CLT just last Sunday, 19th Jan, and sat in A26 - just behind the seat you had: almost right in the radial line of those blades !!! I almost always always sit back there on one side or another, depending on seat availability. On the come-back I decided to change it up a bit just for a change: my employer is a supplier to the aviation industry, so I took advantage of a free minor upgrade to Comfort and sat in A14 for my return journey yesterday, Saturday 25th. It's quieter, and I got my coffee and cookies sooner, but as I'm sure you'd appreciate, I missed the sound of those engines! Thanks for the video, and I'm happy to share your love of the snappy little 717! Keep the videos coming!

Sad to see the end of the Maddog, I used to see Qantas 717s quite a lot. Sadly the last QF 717 flight was on the 30th of December. Good to see a review on an aircraft that is getting rarer these days.
I miss flying the MD-80's when I was a kid. The resonance the engines produced on cruise was better than any lullaby. I would lay my head on the interior panel and fall asleep almost instantly.
Im so happy for you!!! You said many times it was sort of a dream to fly on one (Gorgeous plane flew on it back in 2015 when it was still in service in Europe)
I know I’m not the only one, but I get such a vibe from flying, especially at night. The sounds at pushback, seeing the workers on the tarmac, the glow of the taxiway markers, the dings, the announcements. Even the in flight magazines have a feel to them. There are some great RUclips channels of full flight sounds that I sleep like a baby to.
Great video! Right after Christmas I was flying home from ATL to CHS. I had a 1st class seat on the flight leaving in 2 1/2 hours but put myself on the standby list for the flight leaving in 30 minutes. It was a 42-minute flight, so I didn't care about leg room or a free drink. The agent called me and said I could have the seat on the right-hand side window, same row. It was a blast! The engine noise and wing vapors made it a much more sensational and enjoyable flight. Cheers
Congratulations on 180k! Amazing flight on the Maddog btw, loved the sounds of those engines! It’s a shame it’s retirement may be near, hope I can catch of flight aboard it before then. Great upload! ❤

Nice vid! I'll never forget flying on TWA and Olympic Airways Boeing 707's to Athens from NYC 'back in the day' (i'm 63)! I can still hear those screaming Pratt & Whitney JT3D's ('earworm' for life)!
@@ice711real Those flights were magical for sure! I was a child, then a teen as the jet age was ushered in, and I became an aviation enthusiast at a young age. We flew to Greece and back frequently, and I would always ask my father if he could book flights right in front of the wings, and would almost always get a window seat! The flights were nonstop to Athens, but flying back to New York (JFK) we would almost always stop in Shannon, Ireland for re-fueling. During those flights back to NY, I had the privelege of hearing & feeling the 707 spool up for TWO takeoff cycles! My father passed in 2015, but I have a die cast steel model of an Olympic Airways 707 on my PC's CPU case, just to remember my dad, and his love of flying back to his homeland every summer. Very special days for me indeed.
The 717 was probably the only regional jet I am excited to get on, even though I never been on one, from what I heard from family and now you, it seems to be amazing! It's a shame these are getting retired. Hopefully Delta/Hawaiian becomes the Lufthansa of the 717 :)
@ Short distance ≠ Regional. It's kind of a misnomer, regional means something entirely different, as in not mainline. The 717 is operated by Delta themselves, not a regional partner airline. Regional has nothing to do with how far the plane flies, and everything to do with how many passengers it can carry. (Look up scope clause) There are many mainline flights shorter than regional flights.
I live the approach to DTW and watch 10 - 20 of these go over pretty close on any given day. They are pound for pound the highest noise level of all the planes that regularly go over my house at 2800 feet. Never knew they were so rare. I love the harmonics of the engines when they don’t match RPM.
Last time I flew on a 717 was back when Airtran Airways still existed, flew out of ATL down to Miami FL. A cool jet indeed. My favorite domestic bird is probably the 757, that thing is a rocket for sure. It's a robustly powered aircraft. Cool video!
I was the leader of the software team for the MCDU. We spent 2 years doing the software at Honeywell. I flew on a test flight during development. The engine is a Rolls Royce and sounds amazing like you mentioned. And it has a very unique smell.

Hi Ice711! Nice vid! I hope I get to go on a 717 while I still can 😢
I have gone on the Hawaiian 717 and its engine sound is soo good next to the engine. Very nice view of the Rolls-Royce BR715 turbofan engines. RIP 717
The 717s will Most Definitely flying until the end of the decade and probably even beyond 2031!!!!! The A220s which is suppose to be replacing the 717s Delta is having major delivery problems will those because of supply chain issues and things like that!!!!! Delta isn't even get the A220s delivered to them the way that they were hoping for so Yes the 717s aren't going anywhere anytime soon so we will have quite a few more years too enjoy the 717s 💯💯💯💯💙💙💙💙 even Hawaiian Airlines hasn't announced any plans yet on when they will be retiring theirs
Gotta love those engines perfect seat! One of my viewers recommended I watch your video 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Nice vid Ice

I flew the Hawaiian 717 a few weeks ago! I even got to visit the cockpit! It was a shoe hop from OGG to HNL, but a very memorable one.
That’s awesome! If I ever get to Hawaii one day, I sure hope the 717 is still flying out there.
From what I heard, they are getting retired in a couple of years
Love the 717 Flew on one for years , many round trips. Very comfy, quiet up in comfort & first class.

I had the opportunity and privilege of flying on a Delta 717 back in 2018 from Charlotte to LaGuardia on my way to Portland, MN. I enjoyed the plane very much.
10:44 quite an average landing. and 38 minutes early?! dang that plane is fastt
Looks wonderful! I love these smaller aircraft. Great video!
Thanks for watching mate!
5:44 holy thats steep indeed!
Yeah, trust me, I could feel it in my ears and head 😅
@ dont mind me commenting 10 times btw
Hey, 717 pilot here. The target pitch on takeoff is 18-20 degrees nose up even during a reduced thrust takeoff. It performs great!
Great. Really brings back a lot of good memories. Nothing like McDonald Douglas Aircraft.
13:32 that is Great news :D
If I closed my eyes I can imagine so many inter island flights that I took on HAL with the DC9 and 717. Great video.
Ice can you try going on the shortest commercial flight in the USA?
One of my favorite airliners this time very cool I love your videos man👍👍👍
Boeing 717 is a quite beautiful and quite noisy plane :)
@@MrOreo390 If you think that is noisy, I wish to have you fly on a DC-9 or MD-80 with unsynchronized engines and that Wub wub wub wub sound.
nice video despite how much i dislike boeing the 717 and some others will always have a special place in my heart nice vid
5:00 that sound!!1!!1
Nice vid! I'll never forget flying on TWA and Olympic Airways Boeing 707's to Athens from NYC 'back in the day' (i'm 63)! I can still hear those screaming Pratt & Whitney JT3D's ('earworm' for life)!
Can only imagine how incredible of a flight that must’ve been
@@ice711real Those flights were magical for sure!
The 717 is a mainline jet, not regional.
@@caprica_13 I know, but it's mostly used for regional flights now.
We already lost QantasLink one I Remember flying it before retirement, now unfortunately delta is the next airline to retire the 717, great video!
12:09 imagine the people in the cars 🤑🤑
U know what else we can imagine?
The view of the sky with the engine...
Perfection!!! Great video like always
Thanks for watching!

Neither this reply!

Last time I flew on a 717 was back when Airtran Airways still existed, flew out of ATL down to Miami FL. A cool jet indeed. My favorite domestic bird is probably the 757, that thing is a rocket for sure. It's a robustly powered aircraft. Cool video!
Also love the 757. Thanks for watching!
I have also from the 717 to Chicago O'Hare and also flew another 717 back to Detroit as it is my home airport.
Nice!
I was the leader of the software team for the MCDU. We spent 2 years doing the software at Honeywell. I flew on a test flight during development. The engine is a Rolls Royce and sounds amazing like you mentioned. And it has a very unique smell.
I’ve been lucky enough to fly on Hawaiian’s 717s before, such a gorgeous and neat plane, it’s a shame she won’t be around much longer
this is an amazing video, the stuff you do for your viewers and even manage to educate us is amazing
Thanks for your appreciation :D
Nice video. Old Boeings and MD’s are badass
Cool vid Ice! I have a question. Which are your top 5 fav airlines? And also thank you for doing even another delta trip report. Your the best aviation youtuber
Thanks! Not sure what my top 5 airlines are ngl, but out of airlines I’ve flown, I’d say:
Icelandair
Porter
Delta
Southwest
Idk lol
