  • What is an ox anyways? In this video I give you a definition.
In North America the standard definition of an ox is:
A mature(4-5 year old), male(born a bull calf), castrated (testicles removed), bovine (any breed), and most importantly- Trained to Work!
Being an Ox is more like a job title than a class of cattle.
Just like I am a farmer they are oxen.
There are other classes of working cattle, including cows and bulls but here in North America this is the usual definition of an ox.

It certainly was. We owe so much to these great beasts. I love working with them and spreading the knowledge around👍

@shakeforkcommunityfarm92 child labor was great for building strength and character. As he and my dad sir while we chopped wasp and spider filled wood.
And I'm not sure where you're at, USA hand slavery.
Beautiful and well trained oxen. Wish I had a ox wood splitter. Lol

The problem i have with using oxen is still using a yoke. You can train a bovine as well as an equine. I have owned a few cows and worked a few hundred. I think, if I use the cow to make hay, feed them, milk them and make more hay. The milk production goes down and so does the feed cost!! If you ever put 6 gallons of milk in the fridge Every day, the production loss is a break!

Bovine and equine physiology is very different and the yoke is proven technology. A well fitted yoke is better for a bovine than a collar. And I would never put a bit in the mouth of a ruminant.

Do a pair of oxen always work together? And does a pair have a typical working life span before they're slaughtered for meat?

This team does typically always work together and many teams become bonded for life. I have had other teams that I have switched in and out other oxen in various positions. I have an ox, Joseph, who is very versatile, he is semi retired but I have put him into this team when the other ox was injured. Oxen usually retire between 12 and 15 ,but sometimes they can work longer. Joseph is 14 this year so we will see. 😀💚🐮🐮💚
