I came across this film while looking for something to watch, I missed the first twenty minutes but decided to start watching figuring I would get bored and move on. Never in my life had I been captivated the way I was while watching this movie. I cried so much, Saoirse Ronan is incredible and so, so talented. I loved it. I've since watched the entire film and it amazes me at how beautiful and simple a story can be with out going over the top to try and make it "interesting".
I recall, in high school, being told by a literature teacher that conflict is essential to drama. But, in Brooklyn, conflict is minimal. It's the actors, especially the lead, who make up for this lack of conflict and keep the audience enthralled.
It's more of a quieter inner conflict I think. Having to make a choice between the life you've always known and one where it's less known is no small thing. Choosing between two good, kind, wonderful men who love you is no small thing. Knowing your choice means that you will likely never see your mother again... There's a lot of conflict in her character but it comes mostly at the end when she realizes she actually has to make that choice and can't delay it anymore.
I was rooting for Brie Larson until I saw this movie just recently. What a sweet, delighting movie. And Saoirse Ronan gave a breathtaking performance, she didn't talk much, but you can see the strength she carries on her face. And she nailed it, from start to end. Now I am confused between her and Larson. But Saoirse Ronan is my favorite person, aside from films. She's always been wiser than people her age and she IS SO BEAUTIFUL LIKE WHY AND HOW. Go Ronan and Go Brooklyn!
I just stumbled upon this movie while switching channels... Read the synopsis and decided to watch it for a few minutes. I was so captivated by her acting, and the overall feel of the movie that in myself want to go live in the fifties. Started feeling nostalgic for no reason. It also gave a valuable lesson, that as we grow up we have to find a life that's our own, not related to our past, something that we love. A treasure.
Saoirse is just mezmerising from start to finish. She need not utter a word. You can feel the pain of her situation in every movement. Her eyes tell a story no script could fully capture. I'm still amazed she didn't win an Oscar for this breathtaking understated performance. On day she will get her just reward☺
Ms. Ronan is an amazing actress. She is, obviously, incredibly beautiful. And, perhaps, most importantly, Ms. Ronan comports herself in a genuinely gracious and amiable manner. It’s been said that a person is often a reflection of their parents. If that’s true, then Saoirse Ronan’s parents must be absolutely wonderful people.
i have just seen this girl in brooklyn As a young immigrant half way round the world from home, (scotland in my case,) in New Zealand, she sparked in me great memories of that decision to leave, to deal with the odd bout of home sickness, and the return home. (If i were the script writer, i wudda taken ma back with me) Saoirse Ronan does indeed act with looks, not so much words. This boy had a tear on leaving the theatre today.
both her and Emory were outstanding 🥲🥲🥲👋👋👋👋👋 this and West side story Maria and Tony [ Natalie wood era ] are the most Romantically heartwarming stories ever
Heard of the movie around the time it went out. Tried to watch it but turned it off. Been wanting to go back but never did until tonight. GREAT FILM. Mistake to wait so long.
" The camera loves her" TRUTH.
