- The traditional translation of "Den of Thieves" is misleading both in the mouth of Jesus in the Jerusalem Temple--but more significant,--in the mouth of the Prophet Jeremiah whom Jesus quotes. Here is the back-story on what was really going on, both in the time of Jeremiah and of Jesus.

I've been watching this fellow for a while. He makes sense. He's unstoppable. He produces a lot of work. Having had 12 years of Catholic school, I was brainwashed to a whole different agenda....
You can’t go wrong with Dr. Tabor. If you believe, then still believe, but you have to take the secular scholarship approach into account. The trick is knowing when the text has been obfuscated-changed-as Tabor describes here with the priestly tradition wanting to insert the requirement for sacrifice to preserve their sacrificial “industry” and the lies that that huge obfuscation added into the text.

Jeremiah 7:22. Amos 5:25. Isaiah 11 like you mentioned… but there’s many other puzzle pieces to see this thread. Like 15 other verses I’ve found so far in Micah, Isaiah, psalms, … and plenty evidence in outside sources, like the Essene work, or the Ebionite work, or clementine writings … heck, even the writings of their haters and regurgitators of the haters bear witness to the same story: that they opposed the temple sacrifices altogether. I’m sure Dr. Tabor is aware of this but sharing for those who might see this comment who are learning.

Yes indeed! Jesus was most likely crucified because he was rebelling against the very profitable business of animal sacrifice and the powers that be in the Jewish temple, as well as the Roman authorities weren't pleased to say the least. More and more people are coming to this conclusion. Keith Aker's book The Lost Religion of Jesus goes into great detail regarding this forgotten history. Thanks James!

Thank you for that sane commentary. I was very glad to hear about Jesus' rejection of the sacrificial system - in fact, the slaughter of countless animals - as a profoundly human (rather than divine) invention. Indeed, a monstrous way to "forgive sins": slaughter a bull, a sheep, or at least a dove. How human, how disgusting. As if such a thing would really be "a pleasing aroma to Yahweh". What almighty and transcendent God would really enjoy the smell of burnt animals? But certainly, this well-thought-out system of sacrifice made possible (1) easy "redemption" from sin and, most importantly, (2) excellent and lucrative work for the clergy of that time.
Regarding Solomon's prayer at the dedication of the temple in the 8th chapter of 1 Kings, it should be noted that he does not mention the sacrifice in his speech, neither in his prayer nor in his blessing of the people. But, in the same chapter (1 Kings 8:63), he arranges a huge barbecue, sacrificing 22,000 cattle and 120,000 sheep. They were a big bunch of sinners when they needed so many animals huh? The question is whether such a livestock holocaust was even possible. At what speed was it slaughtered? One cow and ten sheep every 2 minutes? They must have had powerful grills, too. Ridiculous. But again, great business and income for the Levitical priesthood and temple staff.
Sacrifice was, in truth, a part of the lives of the Israelites, as well as of all the peoples of that time. But it was about small "home" altars on which sacrifices to Yahweh were burned, which are described in the Bible. Only later would the clergy take over, ban private sacrifices and centralize worship (and sacrifice) in the Jerusalem temple. Considering that they took the right to write the holy scriptures (which they mostly finished only after the Babylonian captivity), it is not at all crazy to assume that it was they (not God) who added these laws and regulations about sacrifice.
It is quite clear that God wants (and declares according to the prophets) that people change their hearts, live righteously and do not serve pagan gods. God, as a spiritual being, surely does not want to smell the "pleasing aroma" of roasted animals. "All fat is the Lord's!" (Lev. 3:16) Come on! But it was easier for people to sin a little, to pray to Baal for rain, and then to atone for it with the sacrifice prescribed by the priests who thus created a good business for themselves.

Thank you Dr Tabor…the sacrifices have never made sense to me. Cleaning up the volume of blood from the sacrifices of hundreds of thousands would have been a daunting task!! Sacrifices were being offered up all the time outside Jerusalem…by other “religions”! YHVH said not to worship HIM , like these others do.

Sacrifice was certainly part of the tanakh. Not just due to priestly writing but even in elements of scapegoating as well. Now that doesnt mean the temple was meant to be a place of pay to play. But take for example the cain and abel story. Who does god turn too? The fruit or the meat?
Sacrifice was always part of the Temple's purpose. To deny that is silly.
Maybe Bart Ehrman is right. The Bible is not one book, but many books written by different authors with different opinions. Animal sacrifice seems pretty wasteful and stupid, and why would the God of the universe want that?
So some probably did it, some said it's barbaric and not what the true God would want. What is pagan, what isn't?
After hearing this perspective (which I have believed for quite a long time) do you see any connections with the animal skin that was used to clothe Adam and Eve after the fall? Where would the dead animal come from prior to that incident? Unless, of course, this scripture is merely suggesting that Adam and Eve became physical beings at that moment.
I think they were spiritual light beings who fell into the physical realm and were covered with human skin , not animal skin . When you look up the word for skin in the Hebrew text it can mean human skin. Look up light, then look up skin in the Hebrew. They are pronounced the same. One is spelled with a aleph the other one with a ayein. Just a thought to consider.

Aside from that, the word for fruit in this case is not the same word for fruit in other portions of scripture. In this case it is of unknown origin. The mystery is fascinating to me.

What do Church leaders say about chapter 7 of Jeremiah and Amos 5 to spin the narrative to be pro sacrifice?
Is it the animals that are “wild and ravenous beasts”? Pigeons and lambs don’t really fit that description. Or is it the priests who are violent for slaughtering the animals?

It almost sounds like Jesus came in armed with his soldiers to take over the place. I’d imagine back then if you caused a ruckus you’d be dragged out by the guards in no time.
What I see the prophets saying is not that God never gave them the sacrificial system, but that it was being abused. The Sin offerings were for "unintentional" sins. God wanted his people to obey him, and then the only sacrifice which would have been necessary were the daily morning and evening sacrifice of a couple of lambs, some occasional sacrifices for festivals, some for purification from indicental uncleanness, and then whatever peace offerings the people wanted to bring and share with each other.
Instead, the people thought what God wanted was sacrifice and that their lives didn't matter as long as they killed something to make up for it. See Psalm 51 were David contrasts undesirable sacrifices with righteous ones.
We don't have to confuse the issue and speculate on how much of the Torah has been edited away.
It’s pretty clever that whatever scripture I could use to counter your arguments, you can simply dismiss by saying it was inserted by the priesthood.
Of course, it’s possible. But that puts you in a risky and dangerous position since you have pre-- disqualified any counter-arguments by which you may be corrected if you are wrong.
The original Passover sacrifice seems pretty integrated into the whole story of the exodus; do you think that was an insertion by the future priesthood?
How might the exodus story have gone without that sacrifice, and what about the connection to the Christ’s sacrifice that would be lost?
And of course, what about the sacrifice of the Christ itself?

Hell - Comes from the Hebrew "Gehenna", but the King James and some other translations also translate "Sheol" as Hell as well, but most likely incorrectly. [In Greek the word "Hades" replaces the word "Sheol"]
Sheol was simply the grave or underworld, where every one who ever dies goes, obviously. Gehenna, on the other hand, became a term used for a place of unquenchable fiery destruction. It does seem that the concept that Hell (Gehenna) is a place of eternal torture and consciousness is not found in the Bible. Rather, the idea is that Gehenna simply destroys, perhaps painfully, whatever is thrown into it, but nothing about living in the fire eternally conscious, that defeats the purpose of a fire whose job is to destroy.
Everlasting/Forever - I'm not sure if this is actually the full semantic answer to your question, but, one of the words that may cover this topic is the Hebrew "olam" which becomes "aeon" in Greek, like in John's gospel. It really means "age" in the Jewish mind (but also "world"). So, on a strictly semantic level, it actually doesn't mean "forever" or "eternal" like how most of our English translations render it. However, the "age to come" aka the age of the Messiah's rule is said to be un-ending, so its not a stretch for the translators to render it "eternal-life" rather than "age-life" even though "age-life" would capture more of the Jewish flavor of the understanding of life after the resurrection.

@WaffleDragon Not that you asked my opinion, but, deep down I have wondered if in the end God will find a way to save everyone somehow....but I can't lie to myself and say that scripture supports that. The New Testament has Jesus only promising life to his sheep and furthermore warning that God is one who *can* destroy the soul. Certain annihilation is a scary thought.

@@youngknowledgeseeker I guess I've started to realize how complicated life is. There's billions of people out there with millions of different opinions. I don't take leaning towards universal reconciliation as a license to sin. I believe I am still pretty conservative. It's hard to summarize everything in a single comment. I like a lot of the videos from Total Victory of Christ that covers some of the tough verses. He presents the 'Lake of Fire' as a 'refiner's crucible' where the unsaved will be purified of their sins for a time.
In the future God proclaims - "They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea." Therefore no animal sacrifices.
So, with animal sacrifices being injected into The Scriptures by the lying pen of the scribes and priests, which THE CREATOR never commanded, then The Messiah being a sacrifice for our transgressions would be a lie also and He was murdered for teaching The Truth because The Messiah was a threat to the animal sacrifice business

I thought the story is that his evil father used him to perform a human sacrifice with solely to appease himself.
In Isaiah 1 it is the Lord himself saying from his mouth that he doesn't want sacrifices but the NUANCE is that it is from bloody hands that commit iniquity..
As the Lord is rather interested in testing the heart of the people and the disposition of the spirit rather than material deed solely..
And in Isaiah 1 we see that the Lord condemned the levite priests as well as the idolaters in Israel and other nations for doing sacrifices the wrong way for their own gods..
It doesn't say that the Lord is absolutely against sacrifices though(!)..
P.S : i may add that the purpose of the sacrifices made by the levite priests and the idolatrous israelites and non-israelites was to weaken the Lord, push him in a drunken state as blood wrongly spilled is like vine to the Lord(think of Noah's story in Genesis) and reinforce the influence of their own gods...

What if ancient sacrifices really meant that the Israelites needed to sacrifice something to take care of the priests? Not for the animal sacrifice itself…that became priestly commerce. The priests/Levites did not receive a land inheritance and were given charge to take care of the tabernacle/temple. Therefore, they did not have means to support themselves. There needed to be a charge to support the priests.
Also, it is similar to the later concept of tithing in giving a tenth to support the poor and the church.

Well some burnt offerings were wholely given to the Lord, meaning no one ate them ["but God"]. I don't know if this was numerously done, I have to check the occasions. But one that comes to mind is the day of atonement. Animal sacrifice was stopped twice. Firstly when the Temple was previously destroyed. It restarted after the Temple was rebuilt, and continued until the Temple was destroyed again in AD70. As the Temple has not been rebuilt since, no animal sacrifices are made. This shows how animal sacrifice was an important part of the purpose of the Temple, as ordained by God. Jesus was the final and full sacrifice for sin. Unfortunately Tabor does not accept that and so is forced to say the Temple was never about sacrifice, when it clearly was.

Jesus is quoting Hosea 6:6. Note that the original word, in Hebrew, is “chesed”. Use a concordance to see it’s many uses in context and get a sense of its meaning. It means to faithfully obey out of love, often strengthened by an official covenant.
You can actually find many places in the so-called Old Testament where God is criticizing Israel’s animal sacrifices - but it’s always because they are abusing the system, trying to simply pay for their sins or make others pay for profit. This, versus the right use which was as a testimony of repentance, a request for forgiveness and a deterrence against sinning. But this only works if animal sacrifice is perceived and felt as a horror, a cost we’d rather not pay if we didn’t have to.
But like the aroma of sacrifice that pleases God, though our repentance and killing of our old self is often painful, once the corrective process has been completed, it is as pleasant as two unnecessary enemies becoming friends again.

Reading some comments below, I wonder if indeed animal sacrifice was originally proscribed by Moses though perhaps not the ideal of God.
Keep in mind, these animals fed the Levites who had no personal land for themselves, and also was a gift or offering to God for various purposes [and not just animals, plants too!]. So there were layers of practicality to these offerings not just some blood thirsty God out for animal life.
Specifically I am reminded of the day of atonement where the whole animal was given to God, eaten by no one else. But the occasion was significant. It was the day the sins of the entire nation was acknowledged and then forgiven. Both solemn and joyous. However, you can see the implication is that if an animal must be given and die for this and no one even eats it, how serious must one think about sin and what it really is? However this was once a year, not every single day [though there are occasions that animals are offered, usually eaten however, feeding a levite or even the offerer, alongside God].
Firstly, I infer that for yearly offerings of such nature to take place that implies that the people, the nation, never stop sinning. Its just expected they will and so yearly this is required.
Secondly, I can see how God, wanting this to be a lesson in the seriousness of sin and a cause for deep self reflection and repentance, would get disgusted by endless sacrifice, endless killing of animals as a ritual without the accompanying repentance and introspection resulting in change.

Jesus demanded repentance, but the Pharisees relied on sin and sacrifice mistakenly, the concept of blood actually paying for sins is false. Even Christianity has it wrong as Jesus did not pay for sins, he actually gained access to eternal life lost by Adam, only keeping the law by faith (sanctification) is acceptable. Being justified by his blood is baptism, sins are purged as a promise of the new covenant, but only carried out on those sanctified.
As Paul said "no man is justified by works of the law", as these works are transgressions, not law keeping.

The Greek actually transliterates to "spelaion leston" and not "lestes".

The Jews that converted to the new covenant, were all living under and honored the old covenant for 40 years after Christs resurrection waiting for its complete fulfillment in which the new covenant had been fully implemented. The high priest Ananias would not have colluded with the Zealots to kill Paul, because the Zealots later killed Ananias for being a Roman collaborator. So this very much mirrors the parable Mark is telling about his version of Jesus. Mark is creating a backstory to Paul's preached Jesus, and Mark creates his Jesus as a parable for Paul (the sower who went out to sow). Mark does not like the Jerusalem church (who rejected Paul and Paul's Gospel in Antioch Gal 2:11-14). And the Jerusalem church was never reconciled to Paul, Paul's Gospel, and Paul's Jesus, just as Mark's Jesus is never understood by the Jewish disciples in Mark's Gospel. This episode gets a little messy IMO Dr. Tabor. You mention the importance of context, but then equate the sins being committed by teachers of the law with accused rebels. The two scenarios are completely different contextually. Jesus’ warning at the Temple was referring to how the Jewish tradition of celebrating Abraham passing the test God gave him, which gained importance during the Passover in Egypt, turned into a full blown commercial enterprise. Read Mark 12:38-40 to get a better understanding of how the teachers are being described. They were essentially practicing a form of idolatry with their slaughter, and in doing so broke two of God’s Commandments. The parable of the tenants in Mark 12 was the warning given if they do not heed his messenger. In true human form and fashion, Muslim tradition has misinterpreted the real purpose of that site by forbidding non-Muslims from entering, but the important point is for now at least, idol worship in his house has been stopped.

I think the best translation of the original Hebrew and the Greek (in the Septuagint) in Jeremiah is 'robber'. Yes violence was part of it, as robbing typically involved violence towards the person being robbed, particularly if in a public place, just like today. A similar word is also used when Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan, in describing those who attacked and robbed the poor chap on the road. So I think that is the idea being painted, both by Jeremiah and Jesus.
I dont understand how you can claim that in Jesus' mind, the Temple was ONLY for prayer. Jesus knew the Old Testament Scriptures, and viewed them as God's word to the Jewish people. It is God who described how the Temple should be built and its purpose. Part of that was clearly sacrifice. And prayer. Both.

I dont buy your explanation at all. Since the beggining God wanted blood sacrifice, because life is in the blood. In another words, sin means death, and death means bloodshed. That why God refused the fruits and flowers of Cain and accepted the blood from Abel. Jesus knew this.
