I really dont like that they went full digital on the interior. Buttons were there for a reason, I dont want to go through various menus just to turn the fan speed down or some shit,

I've seen people saying the swipe isn't that intuitive, but I wonder whether it is just a case of getting used to it. Certainly at the moment, it isn't something I think advances ease of use and therefore safety.
I just recently got a 6-speed manual mk8 hands down the most fun I’ve had in a hatch. Previously owned a 6 speed mk6 and can assure you vw has matured greatly with this car

Although DSGs weren't quite perfect even up to the 6. Maybe you owned a Mk4 and it's giving you nostalgic memories, so you think it's the best. But I'm telling you, you get a 7 gti with a manual, you'll enjoy that more than the Mk4 equivalent, and that fact crosses over to daily driving too. The Mk7 is, from an engineering perspective, is the Golf platform perfected. The MQB chassis is extremely well-behaved, the Haldex in the R is beautifully setup for drivers of all skill levels. The suspension and damping setup gives a lot of breadth to the driver, even more so with the magnetorrheological setup. It's quite nice to be in and the infotainment isn't all touchscreen. I sold my 7 GTi for an A45 in 2016 and I kinda regretted that to a certain extent. As for the 4 being a subjective favourite, I can already hear the stomping of the purists who only like the 1st gen cars.

Paddle shifters it is i guess! Either that, or pick up a manual. Just ordered my Manual 2022 GTI. Can't wait for it to arrive. I've grown to love everything on this new generation. Except ONE thing, the shift knob. Swapping it out for a MK7 GOLF BALL style knob ASAP.
Cool tidbit: The MK8 GTI makes 61 hp per cylinder. If it were a 16-cyl it would make 976 hp; only 11 hp shy of the original Bugatti Veyron (987 hp/1001 PS). MK7.5 Golf R makes 77 hp per cylinder. If it were a 16 cylinder it would make 1,232 hp or 31 hp more than a Veyron Super Sport. I know this is apples to oranges but the EA888 is still an amazing motor. HP/liter is just as impressive. Golf R makes 153 hp/liter; Veyron Super Sport makes 150 hp/liter. Each cylinder in the VW GTI/R and Bugatti displace 500cc. So they are somewhat comparable.
I can see a reason for the complaint but really it’s not a big cost to add one. It’s not a selling point really is it? Like people don’t like the mk8 nearly as much as the 7/7.5. But if those never came with gas struts and the mk8 did it’s not going to make people buy the mk8 are they. In fact you’ll get comments saying they’d just add it to their mk7/7.5 because it’s no big deal.
Hi TopNL. I have an Opel Vectra station wagon OPC C caravan 2007 which is just over 300 hp right now, but if I get some time and money I would have thought around 500 hp in it. actually I would also like to do the 4 wheel drive, but do not know how. maybe need to get a rear axle from Insignia then?
It's the EA888, the same engine we know out of the mk7 GTI and R, u can easily get it to 370HP, even 400 isn't a problem and some freaks even push ist to over 500/600, so wtf u want more?

If you are looking for similar cars (2.0 turbos) with more capabilities for tuning and HP go look for a S3, A45s, Evo, Type R, etc. Supra’s 2JZ GTE are totally different, hope they make cars in the future that are able to push as much.... GTI’s are awesome but way cheaper and FWD (expect Golf R).

I'm a big fan of the MK7 GTI, mine is modded to 303 KM, 450 Nm. I want switch to the MK8 GTI or R, but i really can't stand the full digital interior with clitoris instead od dsg stick. hmm, maybe that's more appropriate, bus still, I don't like it. I love how the car looks from behind, but can't say the same about the front. My forever problem with GTI and R is that I would love to have all the R performance goodies and 4 x 4, but GTI (especially mk7) looks imo so mych better that the R. Small things like red stripe, and non full black interior. I have to wait to get familiarize with the MK8. Or I will switch to Audi.

I dont get it....you cant write messages on your phone while driving, but to change the temp it is like writing your friend....good that more and more car producers begin to realize how dangerous those screens are. In my 10yo Audi I can do just about all without taking eyes off the road....ok some navi things I need to look down, but 90% I dont need to.
vw really made a mistake with that interior. yeah it might look nice, but we buy gtis because theyre nice to drive. real buttons, gear lever, and handbrake are part of it. fake buttons look as fake as they are.
