Perpetual Change is my favorite song off of 'The Yes Album.' It's so beautiful and melodic, but soooo advanced musically. The middle part where were they pan into 1 ear is so incredibly interesting. Musically speaking, the riff they are playing is in 7/8 and they fade that into 1 ear..... all the while, they bring back the introduction riff which is in 7/4 into the opposite ear. The 2 riffs layer over the top of each other beautifully - AND they were able to replicate this live. Absolutely amazing!
The faster section which pans to the left channel is indeed 7/8. The new section comes in on the right in what I count as a cycle of 14 beats in quarter time subdivided one bar of 6 and one of 8. The latter has also been interpreted as 3/4 with a downbeat on the 15th beat, an extra beat which I don't hear. Even more impressive on Yessongs and House of Blues.
To each his own I suppose, but Starship trooper seems to me to the best, song, one thing, however , the whole Album is one of the best Prog rock ever...
I prefer to count that slow part as 7/2. Give the half note the beat, and the phrase starts over again every 7 half-note beats, 3+4. But at a certain point it’s just a matter of interpretation and preference.
I went to see Yes about 10 years ago, with Jon Davidson singing. I loved this album, growing up, but a lot of the magic went, with my hearing. So far, through the show, I was just watching a bunch of old men relive their glory years, when that middle section hit. That's when the magic struck me. The pity was that they were only played two more albums.
It would be interesting to hear your views by first playing Simon & Garfunkel's America, then listening to the Yes version of the same song. What a treat!!
And the yes version they definitely made their own. Just went to the yes show at the Met in philly without Anderson and squire it was disappointing but they did play America.
Growing up, I listened to a lot of Yes, especially those early albums. Yes has always been in my top five bands, but over the years, I've realized just how great they are, especially compaing them to what's come out in the last 20+ years. For playing and song-writing skills, they're second to none. All are virtuosos with amazingly adept skill at composing brilliant musical works of art. Bravsisimo
So I was 14 in 1971 and bought this album on cassette tape and played it on my Bell and Howell stereo. That was 51 yrs ago and YES has been my favorite band ever since. Enjoy your reviews and seeing young people enjoy this timeless music. “In the Presence” from Magnification would be a nice addition to your YES reviews.
I had to laugh when you paused it just before the middle and mentioned that it was not as chaotic as some of their songs. I was like “no, you just haven’t HEARD the chaotic part yet!” My math brain is fascinated by that middle part. The initial guitar part is a fast 7/8, then the theme that is re-introduced from the beginning is a slow 7/2 (I would call it), so they get out of sync after a few 7/8 measures and come back into sync every 4 of those measures. Then the third voice that comes in last just sounds completely random, yet they ultimately bring it all together. That they can play it without getting confused, especially live, is a testament to what excellent musicians they are! I remember one time in college, a friend of mine and I tried to sing those two parts together, and failed miserably. (Yes, math rock fan, guilty as charged.)
"I had to laugh when you paused it just before the middle and mentioned that it was not as chaotic as some of their songs. I was like “no, you just haven’t HEARD the chaotic part yet!” Haha! Thought the same :D
The live Yessongs version is a must listen to hear how they were able to do this live! In fact, I prefer the live version, which included Bill Bruford during his last committed tour dates with Yes before leaving.
YES ……. It’s this album that did it for me all those years ago, have never been disappointed. I still have all my old vinyls, “T shirts” (that are too small now and faded). Once a YES fan, always a YES fan. Great show Guys.
The problem with the "spotify" world is that if you just download the latest song from an artist you will miss out on the deep cuts or songs that are growers (need multiple listens). Thats why albums were so good. You put a side on and listened to the whole thing. Back in the 70s my friends talked about our favorite albums, not just songs from an artist.
For someone older like me, the ritual of listening to a new album gathering with friends was a priceless multidimensional experience. Today’s generations are left to explore snapshots of music, very unidimensional.
Bill Bruford is, IMO, one of the greatest drummers in the past 50 years. He has a YT channel that is very cool to watch. Saw Yes twice, and as others have said, they are so good live and pretty much match their studio albums on stage.
There is no better way to start a day than with some music from Yes. The vocals, guitar and bass on this song are outstanding. Thanks for making my Day Nick and Lex.......again!
When I purchased my first stereo hifi turntable (in 1971) the first record I played on it was The Yes Album. Since then, whenever I have bought a new turntable, or hi fi system, or CD player, the first thing that has to be played is The Yes Album. Am I strange? The tradition has lasted 51 years and will continue as this album changed my life. Love it! NicknLex, have you reacted to 'I've seen all good people ' yet off this album? If you have I've missed it, if not you must do it. Thanks for a great reaction as always xx
The Yes album makes me so happy Steve Howe made an instant impact. What a wonderful blooper. Thanks Nicknlex for 1971 this is incredible music it’s so adventurous Seen live it’s Epic 👍👍👍
The best album of all time. Every time I hear it it is fresh! The special playing, the harmonics, it is a master piece! The recording techniques were few compared with today's Just awesome talent. Your reactions are a tribute to the power of music to transform and move.
The fading to one ear and introducing something new in the other comes a bit from the fact that this was still the early days of stereo and producers liked to play with it creatively. Some modern listeners find it corny but at the time it was revolutionary. This was a fun listen. 🎉❤
I've never met anyone, in the 70's or among 'modern listeners' who find any of this 'corny'. Is that really the word for it? What company are you keeping? Sounds like they're on the dim side, or just have little concept of time and context for this music.
@@kevinlakeman5043 I know, right? But I've seen at least a half dozen reactors mention it as being "Mickey Mouse", corny or some such term. Haven't really gone back to those reactors. 😁
i was 14 in 1971 and i listened to this album all the time, never gets old {although i did ;) keep em comin' my Rocky Mtn Friends..much love,Kent. long live Yes
Hi NicknLex this is classic top shelf YES and is Steve's first album with Yes. He made such a difference. You have heard so many Yes studio songs you should have a go at the live versions on YesSongs. They are extended and better. What else can be said about the best band ever in the early 70's! But even here you can hear the evolution towards the long format epics that came later.
Hi Guys, hysterical opening. We all had a feeling of Deja' Vu....so funny. Love "The Yes Album". It was the 1st album of theirs I bought....It's long overdue to listen to tracks from the live album "Yessongs" which is now remastered....Tracks "Long Distant Runaround / The Fish", with Chris Squires incredible bass solo to blow you away. It's one track !! & " Excerpts from The Six Wives of Henry VIII " with the amazing Rick Wakeman solo. These two need to be heard to be believed. Considering this was in 1973 it still sounds as incredible now. I hope it wont be too long before you say "Yes". 🤪Byeee Jim X
Hi Jim, I don't know, since when you follow the channel, but they have Yessongs since the birthdays of 21 on their CD shelf ( must have been a good friend, who sent it 😆) and I just reminded them in my last mail, that I and the channel are waiting for Long Distance Runaround/ The Fish live, because they are not only great songs, but for me personally it's the best bass solo of the 70s ... so let's wait and see. Take care my friend from the Island 😄
Great reaction to a great song. But please: it’s not *just* “Jon & Chris”! Steve (this is his first Yes album), sings harmony and backgrounds also!!! Please include him when you mention the vocals.
firs time! WOW! so this is the first song that made me a total FAN fan because it's the first time I ever heard of YES during my first time seeing them Live in 71 at 15. "As truth is gathered, I rearrange"...lyric just lifts me off my feet!
@@debrabrabenec3731 Fabulous line! Jon's lyrics always made sense to me, but then, I tend to think and communicate in metaphors, especially musical metaphors! Thank you Beatles, and others who followed!
I saw Yes at the Forum in Los Angeles in 1977 & didn't know Perpetual Change - I was blow away by the performance of this - they really worked it out for the show by stretching it & when the quiet jazzy part came they dimmed the lights a bit, got quieter for a while & then blasted through the fanfare with an explosion lights & smoke - the whole way home I'm like what was that song!
I just put my hand in front of the screen and you were not there Nick 🤣 Nice bit of Genesis from Yes! Great track! There is no bad track on the Yes Album. This makes me feel 16 again!
They do a great job with their discussions about progressive rock music considering that they are much younger than the tunes in their own time period.
Oh my. Not only is Lex beautiful, but her sneezes @3:22 are cute as all heck. Oh yeah, great reaction you two. I've had this album in my collection since 1976 and it still gets regular play on the turntable.
OMG, I can't hear for seeing!!!!! 🤣 Fun reaction vid, really fun right from the start! Who needs editing! This is what it would be like if we were sitting there with you! Love it!😜
I already know you 2 are gonna love this. Perpetual Change is one of my favorite Yes Songs. Maybe makes my Top 10, but definitely makes my Top 15. I just love how they created music that seems to 'perpetually change' and yet it all somehow works coherently. I believe that's referred to as 'talent'. Edit: When you said Genesis, I thought maybe you 2 were drunk 😱😱🙂🙂
Forgot you hadn't heard this one yet! The Yes Album really put them on the map in early '71 in America. You can tell why. The flower power is strong in this one with the innovative spirit. You'll see perpetual change, indeed. I actually heard this album after Fragile, and it was great to feel the atmosphere that they created with Eddie Offord. I can't wait for you to hear their opus "America!"
Chris Squire was a phenomenal bass player and also a great vocalist . His voice worked really well with Jon Sanderson. The Yes Album has some awesome tracks.
Thank you for accidentally pressing the "Yes" button. This song is so amazing. What's more amazing is that I haven't heard it in such a long time. It was great hearing it with you. That middle jazz piece always gets me, too. You'd mentioned George Benson. But his inspiration for that guitar sound goes back to Wes Montgomery. Check him out some time.
Great reaction! Hey, I remember how much you liked Glass Hammer... did you know that they did an amazing cover of Yes' "South Side of the Sky"? It's incredible, paying tribute to the original while still making it their own. Cheers - and happy new year!
4th year at High school in 1971 when The Yes Album blew my heavy rock mind in a new and everlasting direction. Great work you two. Great ruse with ' Blood on the rooftops '
Glad to see Yes here, as always. I certainly hope you venture back a bit to their earlier work too (one of these days). Their songs "Survival" and "Sweetness" from their earlier albums are of particular note.
An early tune by YES and one of my all time favorite songs. This was the first album with Steve on it and before Rick joined . They were at their most inventive here. Remember Steve could not read music and that is partly why he sounds more jazz like!
Hey you 2 Merry Christmas Happy New Year!!!! Been a while since I visited, blessings YES!!!! PERPETUAL CHANGES 🤣🤣 Awesome cut, on my gardening play list I swear things grow better with 🎶 Sounds fine.....
Another great reaction. I had watched this when you originally released this. I watched it on my other channel and may have even commented there. I love your reactions on these classics and your joy of discovery. Again, just to make a slight correction: Chris Squire deserves so much credit for the vocal arrangements. And he is the other great voice in Yes. But this is three part harmony. And that means that Steve is also singing on this. Just to give credit where it is due.
So glad that you did this song! Another great song on a masterpiece album by these guys! Love the guitar and bass! Really both are front and center! Cannot wait for you to dive into more Yes! Love you both!
i'vwe a;ways prefered the live version of this from "Yessongs". I feel the same about "Yours is No Disgrace" and "Starship Troopers". The Live versions of theses are SO much better than the studio ones. YMMV. Thanks for this - despite the confusing start... ;)
Hopefully you can watch other documentaries/interviews with Yes. Jon A came up with a lot of the lyrics and would sing the music he wanted to other members which is amazing having that in your head when you don't read music. Shows the technical knowledge isn't the end all and be all of things. Still, being able to read music was helpful to me when I joined a choir that didn't require it. It's all good. I've seen them open several concerts with "Perpetual Change," inc. with current singer Jon Davison when he first joined the band.
All of this music was created against a backdrop of rapid societal change in juxaposition to rapid technological advances and space exploration. This is a response to a great sense of hope toward the future while experiencing uncertainty and upheaval in the present. Hope this gives you context for the song.
It almost sounds like Pat Metheny. I’ve often wondered if a young Pat might have been listening to this album in the early 70s although he has repeatedly stated that he feels no connection with progressive rock.
It is always uplifting to watch y'all's reactions to Yes , and other bands, for the first time. Brings me back to the excitement I felt when I first heard there music. One thing I do want to point out though, you always refer to Chris squire during the harmonies. But you are leaving out Steve Howe. He is in the mix on so many of the parts. That truly makes the vocal parts blend especially during the uhh's and ah's. Loved the blooper in the beginning the look on Nick's face 👀 priceless. Thanks for leaving it in
You guys should really check out the live versions of all these YES songs. Totally different experience. More emotion it the songs. Loving your channel! Keep it up!
Okay, I know everybody loves Rick Wakeman, and rightly so…but Tony Kaye sure goes out with a bang here, doesn't he? (And of course, he comes back later.) Love that Nick's blooper took you both by surprise :). Happy New Year!
Here's what we do about the Genesis situation. Nick, if you want to do a Genesis reaction by yourself, you'll first need permission by the subscribers. Please submit your request 48 hours in advance. Please know that we are unlikely to approve any such request for a Genesis reaction before Steve Hackett left. We all deserve to see the both of you react to such critical recordings. Same goes for Yes. It's really the only viable solution.
Yes has a new single released today called, "Cut From The Stars. " New song from the legendary Progressive Rock band, YES. Their new album will be released in May 2023.
I recall a story told by Chris Squire of one night talking to the first black man he had ever met in his life, who was the guitar player for some band who he had watched rehearsing and didn't think much of. It turned out this band was replacing the band he thought Yes was opening for. While in the first song of his set, he realized the audience included members of the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Who and Eric Clapton...all his music heroes...only to learn later they were all there for that black man, Jimi Hendrix.
The YES album is a great first YES record to get into the band. Every song is a golden nugget. Easy to digest. Doesn't require the disciplined ear of the more progressive stuff.
I like Into the Lens and Tempus Fugit, I had the videos on a Greatest Video Hits DVD. For a long time we thought that it was Jon Anderson signing on them hahaha, we thought that he greatly changed his appearance during those years..
I think you're just about done with 'The Yes Album' now. 👍 I think you still haven't done 'Clap' nor 'A Venture' which are both quite short. Hint, hint, Wink, WInk...😁
Perpetual Change is quite an amazing tune and, for an extended experience, listen to the live version off of Yessongs which features a Bill Bruford drum solo - I believe it is the only song on the album that has Bruford playing on it. This was the tour where Bruford left and White took over. I think the live version of this song shows the band as the well oiled machine they were as a performing band. Also, Nick mentioned George Benson when how begins playing the octaves; to hear a direct influence on Howe, listen to the great Wes Montgomery who brought that technique into "popularity." Great stuff all the way around.
It's amazing to me how fully formed a band Yes was by 1971 and how unique their sound was. Gotta do "Going for the One" guys. It's the missing link. Super catchy but with all the complex layers of Yes. You convinced me that "Owner of a Lonely Heart" isn't quite as bad as I remembered it, but "Going for the One" is a radio hit that's way better IMO.
Can’t believe you guys haven’t heard this! I love this album and this is one of my favorite songs from it. If you want to hear some amazing guitar work listen to The Clap. Can we please do some more Todd Rundgren? You need to do some of his more “proggy” stuff. Anything off of Initiation or Ra by Utopia.
Glad you got to hear this … this is one of my all time favorites! Not sure which documentary you saw … but without Jon’s genius, Yes would not have been. Let’s not forget that as amazing as Bill Bruford is… he’s a bit of a musical snob who claims King Crimson as his main band. He left Yes to pursue a jazz career. Don’t put any stock in any documentary who puts Jon as a minor influence … that’s just me I guess. And this is Tony Kaye on keys. An amazing song and an amazing reaction ! Thanks guys.
Yeah, the Yessongs version is worth a listen. In fact, I think you've done all the relevant studio versions, so it's definitely time to do the whole of Yessongs. Perhaps some of the poise and perfection of the studio versions are lost, but the energy and drive are phenomenal, maybe down to Alan White who is drumming on original Bill Bruford tracks (except for Long Distance Runaround, The Fish and Perpetual Change).
So guys if you read this, and you are going to do Yessongs in its entirety, I really want to recommend Ian Hartley's brilliant remaster. Start here ruclips.net/video/EwVObh2hO2g/видео.html
Ahh... Steve Howe arrives and Yes truly becomes Yes.

I love watching you reacting to YES. YES are my favourite (behind the Beatles) since I listened to them first in 1978.
Chris Squire was a phenomenal bass player and also a great vocalist . His voice worked really well with Jon Sanderson. The Yes Album has some awesome tracks.
There is an Australian rules football ex player and coach called Brenton Sanderson. He must be related to Jon Sanderson.
Haha! I like that; "Accidently pressing the YES button". If only the world could do that every day :).
Great reaction! Hey, I remember how much you liked Glass Hammer... did you know that they did an amazing cover of Yes' "South Side of the Sky"? It's incredible, paying tribute to the original while still making it their own. Cheers - and happy new year!
I agree! They did a fantastic job! But also the band "Cairo" from the Magna Carta tribute album "Tales From YESterday" does an awesome version :).
I forgot this song 😊. It's been decades. THX guys. In and out from waltz to soft jazz to heavy. So good. Take care and Cheers 🍁
Try the live versions off Yessongs they take on another life.
Perpetual Change is one amazing song, and it is a transitional song, from the first two album style and what was about to come in Fragile.
Nick "A lot of changes" Yes, Nick, Perpetual change ;-). A very underrated Yes song, I love the bit where the sound changes speakers.
Happy new Yes 👍
Added bonus!!! Blooper included!!!! 🤣
Love it!!!
Been a while since I visited, blessings
YES!!!! PERPETUAL CHANGES 🤣🤣
Awesome cut, on my gardening play list I swear things grow better with 🎶
Sounds fine.....
Another great reaction. I had watched this when you originally released this. I watched it on my other channel and may have even commented there.
I love your reactions on these classics and your joy of discovery.
Again, just to make a slight correction:
Chris Squire deserves so much credit for the vocal arrangements.
YMMV. Thanks for this - despite the confusing start... ;)
Nick/Lex:
Another beautiful Yes composition!
YES and Blooper power. Great reaction!
That Krautrock beat at the end is so great. I wish it would go on forever.
Well, you have to "accidentally" do "A Venture"--a nice little song with a surprising kind of free flow session in it.
10:40 I believe that was Steve Howe paying tribute to Wes Montgomery, who was one of his major influences in guitar playing : )
It almost sounds like Pat Metheny. I’ve often wondered if a young Pat might have been listening to this album in the early 70s although he has repeatedly stated that he feels no connection with progressive rock.
You need to try the live YESSONGS versionn, you will love it!
Keep it up!
Just roll with it!! 😂😂😂 Love this track. Remember the 1st time I heard it in 1972 (yeah, I'm THAT old. lol). Happy New Year to you guys! 😊
Okay, I know everybody loves Rick Wakeman, and rightly so…but Tony Kaye sure goes out with a bang here, doesn't he?
(And of course, he comes back later.)
Love that Nick's blooper took you both by surprise :). Happy New Year!
Bless you Lex! Thanks for doing one of my favourite tracks from Yes. The whole album is incredible but I particularly love this xx
Yes was so adventurous and it seems everything they tried musically worked fabulously.
Yay!!! I love happy bloopers!! Especially YES!!
Some mistakes turn out for the best as you have just proven. Bless you, Lex. Sneezing hope it does not turn into anything more.
Thank you Colin! She is doing fine. I am the one with the awful cough. It's not covid but it's exhausting. Wish you a wonderful new year 🎉
@NicknLex I hope you soon feel better, my friend. Plenty of honey and lemon. Take care of yourself.
@@NicknLex MUCINEX the medicine is great for cough. Over the counter.💡
@@Dave-hb7lx Which causes coughing.
To cough or not to cough, that is the question.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha! (But we all secretly agree!!)😄
Have a Happy and Healthy year ahead. Thank you for your reactions , they are always great to watch.
Yes has a new single released today called, "Cut From The Stars. " New song from the legendary Progressive Rock band, YES. Their new album will be released in May 2023.
You guys are too funny!! Glad it was Perpetual Change. Another one of my favs! Brings back wonderful memories!!
One of my favorites of Yes. Try "Release, Release" by the same band, off their Tormato album.
Woot! Love Perpetual Change! The more you listen to it -it gets better and better-loved it Live!❤( with Alan though💕)
Still waiting for Mind Drive!❤
Another great song, from the most talented band ever! And another great reaction video!
The YES album is a great first YES record to get into the band. Every song is a golden nugget. Easy to digest. Doesn't require the disciplined ear of the more progressive stuff.
Welcome back!! You two are one of my absolutely favorite couples. Your choices and your conversations are some of the very best there is!!!!!
You have to do Into the Lens, Run Into the Light and Tempis Fugit from Yes' Drama. Epic and overlooked stuff.
I was about to request the same songs. Saw them do The Clap, among other treasures, live in 1973 and have been a dedicated fan since.
A quote that I often use in my comments on social media comes from this song.
Great great album
Check out the live version on the Yessongs album. Loved when they would play it live in concert in the 70s. I was waiting for this one to be played.
Happy new Year. Perpetual change is what Yes did for a long time. Still love it. And please keep making such mistakes 🙂
