Made 12 pieces and then realized they were in the opposite direction :-(

Actually it's an issue in the video. The pieces in the assembly part are folded in the other direction than the single unit. As long as all the units are folded in the same direction, you can still assemble them.
(yes I know the comment is a year old, but it might help other people too)

You didn't teach the right way how to make the pieces. The modules are different when you make the kusudama.
