Some folks seem to watch your videos just to call you out about things that they would do differently lol, as a mechanic myself and from watching your channel I realize that if you’re not there in the moment then you have no idea of the circumstances involved, you are good enough at what you do that I’ve never questioned your method of how you get it done as I know you have a reason for doing it the way it has to be done, thanks for sharing your projects!
The guys that call people out like that are just internet experts and usually don't know their ass from their head. They come to watch and learn from him, but when they see something where they think they know better they run their mouths to feel better about themselves. But if you put them in a situation where they were isolated with limited resources they'd fail miserably. When it comes down to it every experienced mechanic knows there's more than one way to make most repairs and get a good, safe, reliable repair. Seriously it's a old tractor and not a F-16 we're talking about.
I worked on construction jobs in the 1970’s and I was amazed how versatile the Case backhoes were. Nearly all the contractors had them. Some talented operators could make them function like an extension of their arms and legs - amazing!
Nanna is such a star in most of your videos now, she kinda reminds me of Annabella the "Truck Inspector General" the yorkshire terrier from Classic Truck Rescue
Thank you Jonathan for being on RUclips i injoy watching you working on old car's and trucks and now tractors and backhoes God bless you and your family and friends
Every time i replaced a bad hose, i would replace the "next worse" one at the same time. tried to stay ahead of the mess. sure miss having an old backhoe around.
Jonathan I have spent thousands of hours in the seat of those case backhoes. Starting with the 480 construction king. Earned a great Iiving for 43 years with rubber tire backhoes. You are missing a short hydraulic cylinder between the right side loader arm and hoist cylinder. It is a equalizer cylinder to keep same pressure between both lift cylinders. That backhoe has a lot of life left. Love all your videos and watch every one. You and your family keep safe.
Jonathan... we're gonna start calling you el Bandido. Scooping up perfectly good equipment for a song and making it function again... on the cheap. Nicely done.
Jonathan makes good use of his resources and knowledge rather throwing money ( he does not have ) at it, Anyone who has watched his video,s will be in No Doubt about Jonathan,s ability,s to repair or rebuild things.
My dad was similar but it's my wife's grandfather that really showed me that you can rebuild almost anything. He was from Bulgaria and also built his own tools from scratch. We're talking a complete woodworking shop and a combination metal lathe and mill. He used things like scrap I beams, rail road track, rebar etc. It was all done during Communism and it's how he made extra money.
One learns with experience, it's always good to "have a look" first. "throwing parts" at things is the expensive way to trouble-shoot. Find the problem/issue first. That will lead you to the most "expedient" solution. "Building a scenario" usually turns out to be a concept that is WAY MORE COMPLICATED then the actual problem once it is discovered. Anyone who fixes lots of things they are not "expert/familiar" with has had that experience.
Good deal! Got her steering without any more out of pocket costs. She'll work hard for you. It just needs a little bit more attention than she's been getting. You're not a lazy man and you'll have her in good shape in no time. Thanks again for your time and videos.
Your ability to diagnose and rebuild things is amazing. Diagnosing and rebuilding is a lost art. So many mechanics today, know nothing about this lost art.
You are the man and who would dislike one of your videos must be basement dewellers or snow flakes I learn something from every video thanks for all you do 👍👍
You're the man keep the good work up and sorry you didn't get the 1935.. but you will never no maybe someday you will find one take care of yourself and God bless you and your family 🙏 prayers for all of you
I think that Ninna does have some kind of super-kitty healing power. Well, aside from the obvious Catscan ability. Good fix. Looking forward to the splitting of the machine. I've seen a little bit about seals and cylinders on Abom79's channel, but nothing about big fixes. Should be good! Thanks, and Meow to Ninja Catscan.
Great video, I really believe you can fix anything. I never seen anyone that knows what the parts proper names are, when I go get a part I better have the old part in my hand and then the other guy across for me has a blank look on his face and says what is it. Lol
That old case is a workhorse. I'm in Illinois and that tractor would still bring $3500 easy. I had a 1969 580 gas that I loved and used for years. It's well worth spending what you have to in order to make it dependable. Now that you have it, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. Good job on that steering repair. That's probably why it was not in use.
Good fix, that, Jon. I'm a "townie" so don't have any experience on ag/construction equipment. Neat setup there, two cylinders plus a tie rod. Glad you got it fixed quickly. If I lived nearby I'd be making a nuisance of myself. Always something interesting going on at your place. Mart.
If you put a new seals in it , they would probably fail before the old ones will , just my experience of the quality of new crap .... I would be happy to own a backhoe just like that one ! Thanks for your time and efforts , much enjoyed and appreciated !
Good job Johnathan, I rebuilt steering cylinder on a IH was like that one, easy quick and worked. We have old tractor 1970 internal drive ps, pump leaked fluid into engine oil something else for you to keep in mind .heck yes on parts tractor always. take care Central California watching
That backhoe is great machine. I would never get tired of working on it between hot rod projects. That machine is capable of doing so many different things. Just keep plugging away at it and you’ll have everything on it working again.
Nice fix on the steering, good that the cylinder was the culprit that was keeping it from turning. I agree, most people would have blown the money on a new cylinder and not even tried to trouble shoot the old one. I'm the same way, if I can fix it I'll do that first before I blow a bunch of cash unnecessarily.
I have never understood why anyone would dislike his videos. If they don’t like it why watch. They should just go troll somewhere else, Honestly it really pisses me off that they do this and leave stupid comments and then Jonathan has to waste his time reading and responding to them
Nice job on cylinder but where's the new twin exhaust going ?? Quality workmanship also an absolute pleasure to watch you work on anything Stay safe and healthy . 🇬🇧
Glad you figured out the steering problems, I've no idea what that part in the ram was , but it's amazing whats found sometimes that don't belong. The slew cylinder seals were leaking hydraulic oil into the slew rack gear box and pushing the gear oil and hyd oil mix out the top on my JCB backhoe loader. I got the new seals cheap from Ebay and pulled the cylinders off. On one side there was a nice shiny 1/4 thread grey iron pipe cap fell out. why the heck somebody put that in there I have no idea as it wouldn't fit through the hydraulic system and fittings to get in there. Luckily it hadn't got crushed up or scored anything while the machine was working with it in there either. Thanks for the video, Take care
Elimination process , one by one , follow them through . Gets the job done . Your right about the rams , easy to do with new seal kits . Other than costing lot to have them repaired in a workshop . Locknuts save everything falling apart , makes sense to use them , false economy using ordinary nuts . Keep up the excellent work and content .
Simple fix results in a cheap useful backhoe . My favorite piece of equipment I own is my JD 310D backhoe it is without a doubt the do any job I need it for machine .
I think that washer was just under the nut and wasn't a lock washer, and that's why it loosened off. Wouldn't be surprised if someone has been in that cylinder before.
Good job! Diagnostics is half the battle. Liked how you determined the cause and effect, might help some younger field techs out! Patiently waiting to see that tree removal!
The at the time biggest tunnel construction company in the us SE HEALEY FROM ILLINOIS WAS FINISHING A TUNNEL IN NEW YORK. THEY NEEDED A D6 SO THEY BOUGHT ONE AND FINISHED THE JOB IN TBE MID 1980S THEY SOLD THE COMPANY. AND DID A INVITORY OF ALL THEIR EQUIPMENT AROUND THE WORLD IN THE BACK. OF THEIR WAREHOUSE FOUND THE LONG FORGOTTEN 1958 D6 WITH 80+ HOURS ON IT. They shipped it to Washington state to finish another tunnel. Then it was put on a piece of ground they leased to store equipment. But the guy they leased the ground from was allowed free use of it. Its still there far as I know age doesn't mean shit it's condition
An old backhoe is as good as a new one to do most jobs. and payments are better to deal with when you go home at nights. Keep working sending videos and say healthy as you are out and about.
Also there is a lock on the boom. If you rev the engine up around 1200 rpm and lift the boom about 3/4 way up then pull back on boom lever till it goes over center than push forward on lever and boom will come towards you and lock. Takes a little practice if you have never done it. Have fun working on backhoe. :-)
Jonathan, I've come to the conclusion that given the tools you could do a heart transplant or bypass surgery👍 That entire 580 series are enormous work horses that can take the beating. Back when I worked for a utility contractor... Operators worked and beat the day lights out of them ( not in a abusive way) in the areas we had to go through at times clearing a path through woods to trench through or plow cable ..digging boulders it took 2 hoe's to move ...they remind me of the oldctimex commercial.. " takes a licking and keep on ticking" or the energizer bunny .. " just keeps going and going and going"

@@southjerseysound7340 Nicely put.
Well said.
The 580 b and th580E were two of the finest backhoes ever made. I may have had a hand in building that backhoe. I worked in that plant for 31 years
Where were they built? Wichita?

Gee whiz, haven a coffee , being a night owl sometimes, and there is a Jonathan video ! Lucky me !!
Do you know how many people would have just replaced that cylinder, I like the way you think Jonathan no money spent that's awesome

In NZ we call that No8 wire thinking. Cos No8 wire can fix almost anything. Makin do! Jonathan, are you sure there's no kiwi in you! Haha nice work n
I am a Kiwi too, yes no 8 wire has repaired many things.

Nice job on that hydraulic cylinder Jonathan you learn something new everyday
Analytical mind with lots of common sense and invaluable experience🤓! What a recipe for a great problem solver!
