i only saw it like 2 decades later, but watching it live must have been awesome. I can imagine the younger fans cheering for Tom Cruise's charater, with older viewers telling them "Don't under estimate Fast Eddie". lol
This film is absolutely masterful. Its one that takes a few viewings to truly, fully appreciate, to notice and appreciate all its subtleties, and the absolute perfectionism in its acting, directing, cinematography, writing, and soundtrack. I noticed Siskel and Ebert's review of it a while ago, and they seemed to, truly, "miss the point," but I think that's because its really a movie that takes a few viewings to really "get" on all levels, and fully appreciate. This is brilliant work, and one of Scorsese's underappreciated masterpieces.
Arguably my favorite scene from a movie ever. I was a fairly serious player at one point though, so I suppose that has a lot to do with it. Still, I love the film.
A great scene from a great film that made me a shit ton of money in the 1980s. Elizabeth, Paul and Tom doing there thing, beautiful acting supported by Martin's craftsmanship. Beautiful.
A masterpiece of a movie, growing up as a child pool hustler, money won is twice as sweet as money earned. This statement runs so deep though, if you’ve lived this game as I did. The best ranked player isn’t necessarily the best player, definitely not the one that has won the most money, usually. This statement is more complicated, you can win big in money pool and not have earned it. You can win big by losing and playing dumb, the best players are not the ones on tv playing 10 ball or whatever the fuck carnival games they invented for TV, but the ones traveling and grinding it out to the wee hours of the morning not knowing if they’ll have to sleep on the streets. Is hustling earned or won, no matter how one wins is unimportant. To be declared the winner holds no disclaimers. Never.
From the second he hears Vincent’s sledgehammer break to when he offers to take them out to dinner is the best scene in this movie. Eddie working the lady and then she’s basically invisible. The looks on Eddie’s face when Vincent suggests they play for free. Later Eddie says it was like looking in a mirror. So damn good
I used to have this old man watch me play in Paloma before he got sick... Sandbagging with certain people and crank it up when he'd told me quit Bullshiting...✍️💰🐾🐺
Most of life hinges on the little 3 second decision....should have said yes, should have said no. The difference between the penthouse and the pinto out back, is vast...but so tiny.
I recently read the book and I actually thought it was horrible.......I think this story is so much better but the ending was a big disappointment.........🎱
With this beginning, the meeting of the characters, the introduction of the characters, and the driving force and motivation of the story are all compactly and seamlessly put together. Is there such a perfect first sequence? In a mediocre film, it would have taken too many sequences just to express this content, and time would have been wasted and the story would have never started.
Newman: How about I take you two out for dinner tonight? Carmen: You should ask Vincent? Newman: How about I take you out for dinner and we leave Vincent here? 😂
Classic - Ron mounting legal troubles 😲🤷♂️ buddy that's not a good situation - you only needed 11,780 votes on the button no less no more exactly that's amazing - you would have one by a single vote buddy that's breathtaking nobody would ever ever ever ever figured that out so incognito type of move - Ron what are we gonna do about the dry skin amd the itchy situation ? Irs unacceptable - I don't like cream - buddy what do you suggest ? Put it in a commercial - yes I love your suggestion ! I got a new bass guitar abs been up playing around with it !
Honestly I am wrong or not this old trying screwed Vincent is girlfriend seen this scene maybe I'm wrong but he kinda screwed her in the car awhile Vincent working in the store ,I stop watching it at the scene that old man and Vincent's girlfriend in the car alone
The charisma of Newman is unbelievable
Best actor ever for my $
Newman is astounding here. So complex yet played so casual.
RIP and long live Paul Newman (January 26, 1925 - September 26, 2008), aged 83
You will always be remembered as a legend.
💖💝🦄🐰🎸
Just adding another comment about this underrated film. Newman was excellent, and certainly did deserve his Oscar.

Mary Elizabeth is so beautiful in this
Newman - "I never kid about money". That look!!!
Not just that. He has the same attitude about money that I do.

Look up scenes from the Hustler for some visceral Color of Money hate lol. Love both of these films
I agree.
Agreed. It’s all about Eddie finally developing character, 25 years later. “Hey. I’m back.”
One of my all-time favs
you said the magic word at the end - Scorcese..............
Paul Newman was absolute class...
Arguably my favorite scene from a movie ever. I was a fairly serious player at one point though, so I suppose that has a lot to do with it. Still, I love the film.
True that, definite changer in the movie, yes very good 👍
Lovely , lovely generous man.
Master of acting!.
Paul Newman.. God, what an actor!
This is a great little vignette in an underrated film.
A great scene from a great film that made me a shit ton of money in the 1980s. Elizabeth, Paul and Tom doing there thing, beautiful acting supported by Martin's craftsmanship. Beautiful.
There are so many great little things going on in this clip that you could easily write a 10k word essay about them.
Adjusted for inflation, $500 in 1987 is equal to $1,262 in 2022
Love this Scene.
And Paul Newman is a f.... Legend !
Forget any $50000 college. THAT SCENE WAS PSYCHOLOGY 101 IN 2
MINUTES.
Never simp for a girl that just wants excitement and power from you
People say Steve McQueen was the king of cool but Paul Newman does a damn good job too;
When acting was a true art form.
No CGI, no bullshit. Just great acting. I agree.
Yessss, bit not too hard cause environment has changed, but maybe not in the right way👍
Cruise is really good!
Back when people were real humans. We are in a era devoid of genuine character
Paul Newman was a true genius of an actor.
0:54 that's a motherf***in HUSTLER right there. Captain Hustle. Listen to his damn game lol incredible.

I still think the best line of the movie is - "Hey Grady, up your a** with the spot.......is that ok with you?"
Most of life hinges on the little 3 second decision....should have said yes, should have said no. The difference between the penthouse and the pinto out back, is vast...but so tiny.
Well said
Best movies. A real connection to character development. Real emotions. WTF happened?
The mid-90's and onward happened and its been a shitshow ever since.
The SJW/Diversity movement.
RUclips-tied A lot of exceptions to the rule.
When real movies were made
great movie
If paul would've played him in the beginning and won...the hustle would've never happened
I like this movie
Awesome movie
"where the hell are the singing cats?"
Life lesson there, folks 🎱
I know it's a hot take, but one of the few times the sequel is better than the original.
I actually agree with you!

I think it would have been interesting for them to go by the book and got Newman and Gleason back playing pool again.
I recently read the book and I actually thought it was horrible.......I think this story is so much better but the ending was a big disappointment.........🎱
They wanted Gleason back but with him wanting his way on set and everything it just didn't work out

You don’t know what you’re doing, do ya?..
Newman: How about I take you two out for dinner tonight?
Carmen: You should ask Vincent?
Newman: How about I take you out for dinner and we leave Vincent here? 😂
She didnt know what she was doing. Know why? Cause its to much money. Lol

Honestly I am wrong or not this old trying screwed Vincent is girlfriend seen this scene maybe I'm wrong but he kinda screwed her in the car awhile Vincent working in the store ,I stop watching it at the scene that old man and Vincent's girlfriend in the car alone
No he almost did in the hotel room he took her in the bathroom but then he checked her
If she hadn't said "Oh are you serious?" with such a bad delivery this scene woulda been better.
@gothatway09 Agreed. Her bad acting is actually how people like that talk.
@robert tidwell I get it but she couldve said it less..just less.
@gothatway09 Not in a pool hall.
Her character was caught stealing from Vincent's mother. She is not supposed to be refined
@robert tidwell If they have potential they are...a lot of times this potential goes untapped due to the environment you grow up in though.
This movie stinks. They never got around to Tony.
