The Chinese Yuan isnt becoming the reserve currency anytime soon. The country with a reserve currency has to by definition absorb the world's imports which needs a large large domestic consumption market and a free one at that. The US has that right now. Having a reserve currency also hollows out your manufacturing base as we have seen in the west. China is a net exporter of goods. It is not comfortable importing vast amount of goods for consumption. Thats why the Yuan will not be the reserve currency at all. The best case is that the world has a basket of reserve currencies as the world becomes more multupolar. Also, the Chinese currency is undervalued and overvalued at the same time. Thats why so much money goes out of china to buy US assets. This itself says a lot about the stability of Chinese currency. If the currency is not fully convertible, you cant have that currency as a reserve currency. Excess Yuan getting invested in Chinese treasury is plain stupid. People invest in US bonds because its the reserve currency, not the other way around. None of this means that Yuan wont be strong. But for it to become the reserve curency, China will have to upend its entire econoimic structure which makes it grow at less than 2% during the transition if not less. This seems highly unlikely.
Finally a sensible comment. The reason why the US dollar does not get overvalued due to such high international demand is because they have huge import market that devalues the currency. To navigate through that, the US built an economy purely based on complicated engineering, software and services. China is mostly a manufacturing export based economy. If Chinese yuan wishes to take the place of US dollar, China will have to become a net import economy which will ruin their economy in the first place, which is mostly export based. Best case, Chinese yaun becomes the 3rd biggest reserve currency after dollar and euro. But it will never overtake dollar.

The American rust belt is the cost that the US has paid for the reserve currency status. It has sacrificed a lot of the resilient features that America once had. We need a balance of power which has been non-existent for the past four centuries, preferably three-four countries major countries that can offset each other in different ways. What you think China will do with its currency is what the US has been doing for the past 70 years. They've sanctioned, forced, manipulated, and destroyed other country's economy for their own interest. BTW, Sri Lanka's biggest debtors are actually the world bank and Japan. China comes in third. The Chinese Yuan isnt becoming the reserve currency anytime soon. The country with a reserve currency has to by definition absorb the world's imports which needs a large large domestic consumption market and a free one at that. The US has that right now. Having a reserve currency also hollows out your manufacturing base as we have seen in the west. China is a net exporter of goods. It is not comfortable importing vast amount of goods for consumption. Thats why the Yuan will not be the reserve currency at all. The best case is that the world has a basket of reserve currencies as the world becomes more multupolar.
Also, the Chinese currency is undervalued and overvalued at the same time. Thats why so much money goes out of china to buy US assets. This itself says a lot about the stability of Chinese currency. If the currency is not fully convertible, you cant have that currency as a reserve currency.
Excess Yuan getting invested in Chinese treasury is plain stupid. People invest in US bonds because its the reserve currency, not the other way around.
None of this means that Yuan wont be strong. But for it to become the reserve curency, China will have to upend its entire econoimic structure which makes it grow at less than 2% during the transition if not less. This seems highly unlikely.

The reason why the US dollar does not get overvalued due to such high international demand is because they have huge import market that devalues the currency. To navigate through that, the US built an economy purely based on complicated engineering, software and services.
China is mostly a manufacturing export based economy. If Chinese yuan wishes to take the place of US dollar, China will have to become a net import economy which will ruin their economy in the first place, which is mostly export based.
Best case, Chinese yaun becomes the 3rd biggest reserve currency after dollar and euro. But it will never overtake dollar.

The American rust belt is the cost that the US has paid for the reserve currency status. It has sacrificed a lot of the resilient features that America once had. The US is still far more resilient than Europe but its infation can still be controlled by Beijing.
For China to take the top spot, it will have to transition to a consumption-based economy which will shatter its growth for at least a decade. They have tried doing it but have failed. The USD isn't going anywhere. It will steadily lose its dominance though.

We need a balance of power which has been non-existent for the past four centuries, preferably three-four countries major countries that can offset each other in different ways.
What you think China will do with its currency is what the US has been doing for the past 70 years. They've sanctioned, forced, manipulated, and destroyed other country's economy for their own interest. BTW, Sri Lanka's biggest debtors are actually the world bank and Japan. China comes in third.
