Review: Rode NT-USB microphone
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- Testing Rode's new NT-USB microphone which, as the name suggests, is a microphone that outputs directly to USB so you can plug it straight into a Mac or PC without the need for a sound mixer or sound card.
In the video, I compare its quality to that of a standalone XLR-USB adapter, Shure's X2U, using a Sennheiser ME66 shotgun mic (together worth about £450 versus the Rode at £130).
If you'd like to buy the Rode NT-USB, we'd be very grateful if you did so via our Amazon link as we get a little commission that way: amzn.to/12rXtoj

this was the best review on a mic I ever seen TY
Wow, thank you!
+will killa it truly is ^^
+will killa I really agree with you! even pausing to hear the background noise .. awesome work :)
Thanks!
Couldn't agree more. Thank you for the great review. You actually helped me to finally make my choice.
Yes the Rode NT-USB sounds great. Just got my hands on one and as you say it is good value for money.
Bought the Rode following your review and it is even more surprising in the flesh than I imagined. The build quality is like pro-grade equipment, looks very cool and the addition of the pop-filter and a little stand is just another thing to smile about (since they visually complement the mic).
I did the same thing as you, straight out of the box into a USB through Audacity software, without touching any settings and it sounded exceptionally good, no discernible noise on the graph, no distortion, no popping or crackling, just like listening to a radio show. And then you look at the price label again and remain stunned.
Personally I like it more than the similar Blue (Yeti) microphones that are omni-directional and pick up everything in the room, and the Audio-Technica 2020 is a bit sensitive for my taste and has more noise at normal levels.
Job well done Røde!
madant1977 thanks for the comment i was unsure between audio technica at-2020 usb+ and rode nt-usb and you made me choose nt-usb thanks!!!
Quality comment
such a good mic, cant get enough of it!
I was listening to this demo on my IPad mono speaker and Definetely and immediately I heard the difference between the shotgun Sennheiser and the Rode .Aaaah the aRODE has such full bodied sound,so clear I'm buying one.it will be perfect for my voice. You can do anything with it.If you wanna shout or sing loud go backwards a few steps it catches everything perfectly,no flat ,no lifeless sound,no artificial coloring.Just a real natural reproduction of everything that's been recorded.Im impressed and sold on this mic.Thats the one.
Hello! I just launched my gaming channel but before, when I was searching for a microphone, I was very indecisive about choosing the rodeo over the blue yeti. I lost count on how many crappy review videos I've watched and I was soooo close to giving up until I came across yours.
You've demonstrated and explained everything really well and after I finished watching your video, I finally made up my mind and went straight on to Amazon to buy my own rodeo microphone and I have had no regrets!
Keep up the good work!
Katie :)
Glad you found the video useful. Good luck with your channel. Cheers
Excellent, I ordered this today. I had to have it in addition to my Blue Yeti and my Audio-Technica at2020USB. Both very good microphones, but I feel the Røde NT-USB has the advantage sound-wise over both of those.
Hi if you don't mind me asking, which one of these microphones turned out best? I'm trying to choose between exactly those three
Great review mate, I was researching various mics to find an excellent USB mic; going to order this one today. It sounds excellent.
Thank you! I like it
Why 2 dislike you are great... Keep going ^^
Thank you!
The Rode Mic is actually maybe better tbh... that;s very impressive! Great Video i will be buying one simply because of you lol :p
I hope Rode appreciate all the business I send their way ;-)
:D
Thanks for a thorough and great review! Just ordered it at my local RØDE dealer. THANK YOU!
Terrific! It's a nice mic, I think. I use it all the time.
When I heard you switch over to the Rode Microphone, I was shocked! It is very clear, 'studio' quality sound. I was very shocked with the price also when looking for it on other websites. Pretty good!
I will buy one and use it for Podcasts, normal gaming videos and normal Skype calls. With Skype calls you just move the mic out of the way (like near your monitor) and talk. It still sounds great. I will definitely buy one
It's a great mic
It'll be great for podcasts. It won't be so good if you move it away though, it's designed to be used like a studio mic, up close (6-12 inches from mouth)
TubeShooterMag Yeah. Good for me. But I saw a lot of review on it saying the whole build quality is good except for the stand. They say that "it's pretty flimsy, so probably best for a separate mic stand". Is it flimsy for you? If you still have it, cause this video is made in 2014
Still have it and use it on almost every video I make. The stand's not flimsy in build quality but it could be heavier and sturdier in terms of holding the mic stable; easy to knock over.
Have watched a few good reviews on this now. Will go either tomorrow, or any other day on the rest of week & check this out at my favorite dealer & most likely buy this one for my RUclips Channel here. Thank you for the neat show & review! :)
It's a good mic, have fun :-)
It's a good mic, have fun :-)
TubeShooterMag Yep so itll probalby be Thursday. Its either this one or a Shure Mic it looks like now. But you got the hole equipment set included here, so looks good :)
Great review! Just bought the Rode NT-USB!
For once us Australians get something cheaper than the rest of the world
Well, you do make it after all!! I feel your pain though, stuff here in the UK is always way more costly than in the US.
yes its so hard to get cheap recording equipment here
Thanks for the review. The only thing I disagree on is the level of noise and the word "slightly". The Rode has a MUCH higher noisefloor which was immediately audible to me on the video :)
Just picked this one up recently and wow. Cheaper and comparable in quality to my old AKG 120, and with its own pop filter. Very happy happy with it thus far. It really is tough to come up with negatives for it. XD
Thank you sir, thank you very very much! Now I now that I´m gonna buy the NT-USB
:-)
*Absolutely amazing detailed review!*
Thanks for helping with purchase decision! :D
Glad you liked it! Cheers
I just got it today, it was recommended to me by a friend working in audio and stuff. This is a real good mic, very sturdy, portable and dead easy to use. I am going to use it for podcasts and other small audio projects. As a student with a reasonable budget, I really picked up something of very good quality for the money I spent. I strongly recommend it.
Agreed!
Thanks a whole lot for your practical experience. I will most likely buy this one as well :) If you have any other comment´s about it so far, please do tell us.. :)
I ordered one last night... Can't wait to get it :D
I agree with will killa below that this was the best mic review I've ever seen.
Thank you!
I have just discovered your channel, thanks for you great review of the RODE NT-USB. The comparative audio recordings are excellent. Thanks.
Simple Audio Tips Very kind of you to say; thank you!
thank you so much, this helped me heaps, i just started my channel and i wasnt so sure on getting it,thanks!
No worries! Good luck with your channel.
Awesome review. I have a blue yeti and I was thinking of changing. I prefer the yeti because of what I use it for. I can scream into it or talk really soft or even sing into it and I don't even need a pop filter. You can probably find yetis these days for around the same price.
Great review ...told me everything I needed to know...many thanks Best Geoff
The best review on Rode NT USB, exactly what I was looking for! Thanks a lot, mate.
Brilliant review, really useful and very well delivered. Thank you very much!
Great; cheers
So I was looking for reviews for this mic... Clicked this video... And lo and behold my favourite narrowboater pops up! What a pleasant surprise. Will you do more videos on this channel? Also would you still recommend this mic? I'm looking to get a mic for voiceovers :)
Hello! It's a good mic, but I haven't really kept up with whether there are now any better alternatives. I'd happily still use it for voiceovers. I do very occasionally post on here but I haven't bought any video gear for ages! However there is one video coming here soon 👍
Great review, very well done it was just what I needed
Excellent, thank you
Fantastic review!!
danm this review is insane :D im going to get this mic soon... very soon :D
Same here
:-)
This video helped me make a decision. Thank you! :)
I just wondered whether Rode ever made a Rodent pun in the microphone naming, so i googled it up... and here it is. Don't think i need it, i don't use a microphone at all, but i happen to have a large membrane capacitive and a bunch of dynamics SOMEWHERE. Just need to get an icicle (or its sibling from Thomann), or some kind of interface for it. Been hunting for one insane discontinued soundcard though, Terrasoniq Phase X64. Why insane? You can install a Waveblaster on the inside, and the internal signal routing is determined by a dozen switches on its side, and you need a wall poster sized dense wiring chart to operate the switches. Not that i have a Waveblaster though, i gave my Dream64 one away to a friend who was building a retro PC, but i was thinking of maybe engineering a new STM32 based Waveblaster with SF2 support. Wouldn't that be neat?
I would get this mic if I'd needed it, if it wasn't for the mics I have. Awesome lil thing.
Thanks for this great review. I keep going back and forth between the Rode and the Blue Yeti. But it looks like the Rode is a better quality investment.
I've not tried the Yeti but the Rode is a nice mic.
Thanks, I went with the Rode. Excited to use it for my voice-overs. Hopefully the stand isn't too flimsy.
I've never found it flimsy, maybe a bit small.
I'm sold.
Fantastic review
scott2579 Thank you!
Thanks, great honest review - I'm getting one now
Great. Hope you enjoy it. Cheers.
Thank you so much. Now i know what to buy.
Thumbs up from me!
Thank you for this great review! Subscribed.
Thanks!
Excellent review dude! Just ordered one :)
+MarkLudford I really hope Rode appreciate all the business that's gone their way because of this review :-)
I use this mic, and I love it. :)
Great video. I`d like getting this one in addition to my Blue Yeti. The Rode NT sounds great, honestly even better than the Sennheiser.
+smoothvelvetsinger the Sennheiser had slightly better bass. honestly this rode nt usb is a badass
Please I'm between a Scarlett package 2nd generation and THIS microphone. Which one do u recommend? And why? Ps this one is cheaper.
What a great review! Thank you very much ;)
+TeddyBear You're welcome. Cheers
Røde NT-USB 3:49
Sennheiser ME66 via Shure X2U 5:10 (~£450 Adapter + Mic)
or 5:42 for both in a row
Great review 👍🏼
Thank you
oh my jesusthat sounds beautiful
this vid got you my sub and like almost instantly
love this mic got him 2 days ago wow i like it good review !
Thank you for this detailed and professional review!
Great informative review. Helped make my decision to get the Rode.
Been using a Behringer C-1U Condensor Mike since 2012 and although most people suggested me the Blue Yeti I wanted to look for Alternatives and after looking at this video I think I made the right choice when I ordered it from Amazon. And it was £5 cheaper (£125)
Great review! A bought this Mic a few days ago over a AT2020+. I'm still waiting for it to arrive but I hoping it's worth it :D!
Xocliw Gaming It should be. It has a nice warm sound, little noise and it's certainly excellent value.
I'm trying to decide between the two mics right now. Could you tell me if it was worth buying over the AT2020?
I am also pondering these two mics. WHICH ONE IS BETTER? I do pretty "big" sounding (male) VO for radio TV and web...anyone have feedback 4 me on these?
The sound of this thing is amazing!
Thanks for France ! I will buy it for my videos ! Thanks dear :)
You just thanked a brit for the gift of France? There's something you dont see everyday :)
very useful thanks
great video dude!
Thank you!
Thank you. 4 years later still a great price and such a helpful review. Glad I found it.
I'm still a large diaphragm condenser mic and separate pre-amp / interface kinda guy but that's because I like to get a warmer deeper sound with a little more bass end. Good comparison of the two by the way. By the way - checked your Amazon link and didn't work for some reason.
***** Hmm, thanks for that, I'll check it. Normally I use a separate mic but quite like the all-in-one nature of this one and can always tweak the sound a bit in the edit. It sounds warmer in the studio than it does once it's been through RUclips encoding too.
Bloody good review. Thanks.
+avjumble Cheers!
Man I loved the lack of noise from the Sennheiser, there was definitely a noticeable difference. But yeah, too pricey. A lot of these USB mics sound alright at their default levels, but when you're editing videos and you have to boost the audio level or apply compression, it brings out all the noise. So the less noise you start with, the better. Thanks for the video.
Indeed! And that's why getting the levels right from the start is so important.
The Sennheiser had less background noise. But the Rode would have had a better chance with a few adjustments, from an educated guess.
You are so lucky ;)
Shame these have issues with connectivity... I got one today, my desktop running Windows 10 wasn't detecting it at all. Neither did my MacBook Pro.
That's odd. The Macbook I tested it on (as seen in the video) was fine as is my Windows 10 laptop. Perhaps you have a faulty unit.
Really well done.
I'm mostly here to cure buyer's remorse (just got mine today) and hallelujah the demon is out!
About the Gold Dot - you'll notice it's prominently displayed on the packaging - though not explicitly pointed out - I think the idea is to get you to notice the gold dot on the mic and join the dots, so to speak, when you use it.
Klotz do a similar thing with their cables - one end has a pic of a guitar and a since cables are supposed to be directional (depending on who you ask of course) it's assumed that you will always plug the guitar pic end into the guitar.
There's also a great video from Rode floating around that demonstrates talking across the mic for best results. Really worth a look.
Again, thanks for a very professional, verging on scientific, comparison.
Thanks for this review! Im seriously considering getting this mic and it looks like a great mic to use ^_^
TanikasMisadventures Glad it was useful. Thanks for watching!
got one 3 days ago, so far i am really happy with it. i would like to point out the sound out of rode for example if you playing music true the head phone jack on Rode is crazy good. you probably aren't baying a mic to use it as your sound card, but it does it really well. now i am by far not a professional ! but if i compare it to my sound setup my Audio Technica ATH-M50x will perform extremely well on rode mic with the only difference being i cant get as hig bass on the mic sound out, and by bass i compare it to bass boost on my normal rig. of course a lot of people do not like such features but i only liked to say it. but if i compare it without the bass boost its the same quality with great range in the bass just not vibrate of your head bass : b
only saying is cuss for normal people looking for a mic and do not own a great sound card i am sure this will do the job no problem. and then you got even more value.
Bought the mic today, only problem is i cant get the tripod to screw in its place. It always gets stuck in the beginning and starts tilting sideways and i just cant get it right. any help?
No idea. Have you turned it upside down and tried screwing the base on that way? Is there any muck or grit in the screw thread?
Yes, no muck or nothing, it jusy doesnt want to screw on properly.
I can only assume it's a manufacturing fault in that case. Have you emailed Rode? They're good at customer support I think.
+TubeShooterMag can you use another tripod for the microphone?
I purchased this microphone based on your video...I like it...much better than the Blue Snowball...
Excellent!
how much background noice do you take away with audacity and how much do you modify your voice while using the NT- USB mic? don't want to get Mugged of or scammed.
This video is great. The intro and outro fonts feel a little bit amateur-ish compared to your video. why not use something like helvetica ?
Amazing video, you've convinced me to go for this mic, was planning to muy a DR05 but this appears to be worth it the extra money.
Subscribed!
Julio Montaño Glad you found it helpful! Thanks.
hey did you buy it? how is it :)
I regretted last minute, instead I bought a Cry Baby pedal for my guitar but will still be looking for the Rode in the future :)
purchased it. amazing mic.
yup nicely done RODE :D
Is this a good mic for recording some rap vocals, and is it better or worse than the similarly priced Rode NT1-A?
MrJaymezGee I think it would do a perfectly god job doing rap vocals. The NT1a requires a separate mic pre-amp / sound card to get the sound into your computer where the NT-USB plugs straight in. The NT1a is, I believe, a better mic.
I would like to use that microphone while playing games ( and record my voice while playing). Do you know if it also records the keyboard and the use of my mouse - that would be rly annoying later. Or do you know how to avoid that or if it's even possible to avoid that ? Thanks for an upcoming answer.
Coday The mic is biased to pick up more from sound in front of it than behind but assuming the mic is next to the keyboard as you play, then it would depend a) how loud the rest of the gameplay is as to whether it masks the keyboard noise, and b) how noisy your keyboard actually is!
You might wish to try a shotgun mic instead but even those will pick up SOME sound from around it and if it were next to the keyboard, that would include the sound. So my guess is that yes, the Rode will pick up some keyboard noise. I would have imagined that would add to the ambience of the gameplay though, no?
You're going to have a hard time totally eliminating ambient noises like the keyboard and only picking up your voice because microphones of course don't know that that's what you want to pick up.
You might have to try a very close-mic'd cheek mic (like the kind that singers wear on stage or people doing corporate presentations) as these are so close to your mouth that you can turn the gain down and in doing so, make everything further away, like the keyboard, that much quieter.
Alright, thank you very much !
Awesome review :) i just order one Rode NT-USB of ebay :)
thanks again
Glad you liked it, cheers
it is a really good mic!
I think I am going to buy it for a yt acc with a friend of mine
Hi! I'm looking for a better mic, now I have a bm-800, -the cheapest thing I found to start recording my voice decently-, my actual budged goes around 200€ but it surprises me that the ones with best reviews are mics from 2014-2015, is this industry stagnant? Could you recomend me some good mics from the 2016-2017? Thanks for your attention and professionality (and sorry for my english, is not goodest as I wish).
I wouldn't go looking for mics based on the date they're released, it's not like phone or computer tech where things improve drastically each year. It's not stagnant but change and improvement and development cycles are much slower.
TubeShooterMag Thanks, is exactly what I need to know.
Thanks. Nice review. Subscribed.
+KBOOm Thanks!
hi, question, could you plug two of those microphones into a mac Pro and get the interview going?
I seem to recall that you can't but I can't remember why I think that. Fairly sure someone else asked me a similar query and I asked Rode about it. If you've time, try scrolling through this video's comments and you might find it.
Just the video I was looking for, definitely going to buy one of these, and thanks for the demo/comparison - really helpful :)
+Dansky Great! Thanks
Subbed! Brilliant Review! - Concise and to the point! very helpful, interesting, and very professional! Great Videos! Keep up the good Work! :D
Thanks. Reviews are a bit intermittent at present but when I get stuff in, I'll do one!
:)
I just bought this, with the shock mount and pop filter. Have mine hanging in the shock mount (with the usb pointing upwards) but I only get keyboard and mouse clicks. Can't get rid of them :( Not sure if the mic is to sensitive or if I have messed something up.
Are you sure it's pointing forwards, towards you? Little gold circle on the mic towards you? If you have it right next to the keyboard, it's going to pick up the sounds from that anyway, even a shotgun mic would pick some of that up.
TubeShooterMag Thx for the answer, you are awesome :) Yeah, I have the gold circle towards me. Prob with that is that the pointy end (up?) of the mic then points down towards the mouse and keyboard.
I also tried with just that, the up? side towards me and the gold circle pointing up, but that made no difference...
I run it through Adobe Audition and then Twitch and no filter settings I have managed to set up got rid of the click click click in the background...
The top of the mic is irrelevant, this mic picks up sound from the (vertical) sides. But it's a voiceover / song vocals mic really, designed to be max six inches from your mouth.
Nice Review sir. I'm going to buy the RODE NT-USB, thanks for the Review! Subbed & Liked
Fares™ Glad you found it useful! Cheers for the feedback (and the Like & Sub)
I have it :)
Thanks.. heading out to get one right now.
How do you think it compares to the NT1? I've got that hooked up to a quad capture, but I was wondering if the NT-USB would be good for convenience reasons, since I'm guessing the difference between the two is negligible in a standard non studio room. The only thing I notice different is the USB is a 16bit/48kHz mic, but again I don't know if 24bit/96 would make any difference at all.
Tephnos The NT1 is technically a better mic but as you suggest, the difference in a non-studio recording environment and when listened to in a typical listening environment is almost certainly negligible. Likewise, although 24/96 is the audiophile standard (or higher!), let's not forget that CDs are 16/44 and the typical listener is more than happy to dump 2/3 of the audio information when compressing to mp3 anyway!!
So unless you're looking to record a studio album of audiophile quality, I wouldn't think the NT1 would be a better choice since you also then need a suitable sound capture device as well.
Bought this on the back of your review and I'm very happy with it. I have used in the past the Rode Podcaster but I think I'll stick with this from now on. Cheaper ($185 in Melbourne Australia) compared to $210 for the Podcaster and no noticeable difference. Only thing I can pick up is the mic stand could be a little taller...small thing though!
Brad Arnoldt Yes I agree about the stand -end up peering down towards the mic!!
Absolutely fantastic review. Thanks for the effort!
+Indelible Gaming Glad you liked it! Cheers
What will happen if you record with it? As what kind of a file is it saved to your computer?
That depends entirely on what software you use to make the recording, the file type is not a function of the microphone. The mic just presents the audio to the computer, your software decides how to save it.
TubeShooterMag Thanks a lot, so it works the same as if I would plug in my webcam as an example? Just press record and that would be all? This will be very handy. Thanks for confirming this for me! I love your honest review, keep on going!
Pretty much, yes!
TubeShooterMag Thanks, your video convinced me to buy it. It will come in handy for my youtube channel and music. Thanks a lot for your help, I appreciate it a lot.
No worries. Have fun :-)
great video!
does the playback from plugging in a set of headphones directly to the mic show some delay/echo? or is the playback immediate and direct?
Thank you!
Derick David There's no delay in hearing your speech; you're hearing the audio from the mic directly when you plug cans in. As regards any delay from audio on the PC playing back at the same time (eg singing along to an instrumental track) I've not tried it.
never thought that the sound would be so good, thank you for this video.
Hi, thanks for the video. I'm using this mic with the ipad pro 3rd gen(usb-c connection) so using official apple adapter. It will not record in garage band, just continues to use the internal mic. Any ideas please?
Absolutely no ideas, sorry. Usually there would be a setting in the app to select which mic to use. I've never tried Garageband so can't really help.
Best reviewer ever you deserve SO MANY more subscribers!
+SudoMilkyWay Thank you very much!
TubeShooterMag
A really good review. It was an absolute pleasure to watch. Very good job indeed. Very informative and convincing. Thank you very much.
Otto Vollmers Thank you very much!
What a great review! Fantastic work!
Hi, do you have an improvement in the quality, clarity of sound from a blue yeti ?
+Khaled Azrak I have never tried a Blue Yeti so cannot comment, sorry.
What a totally excellent review, thanks! Do you know whether you can record a VO onto and iPhone 6 with an adapter? Or onto an SLR? If not can you advise?
It's certainly not designed to plug into traditional audio inputs like a DSLR & I don't know why you'd want to? An odd device to record a VO onto, I'd have thought!
iPhone? Not sure, sorry. You'd have to get some kind of USB to lightning converter I presume but whether the phone would actually recognise it I don't know.

I'm probably trying to find the impossible - a mic for recording my own VO to my Mac and recording others when I am out and about, not always with my DSLR. The iPhone is unobtrusive and doesn't scare people. Thanks for replying.
Oh, crikey, this would be utterly unsuitable for interviewees. Apart from anything it likes to be very close to the mouth (you practically eat the windshield when speaking) which would be weird for interviews.
A tieclip mic would be equally unobtrusive as an iPhone and people would forget they're wearing it (but you must wear headphones when recording in case they brush the mic with their clothes and spoil the audio, which happens with tieclips). You could also record voiceovers with one.
The difficulty is finding one that connects directly to phone, DSLR and Mac as they all have different inputs (the mic input on a computer isn't worth using, they have terrible audio quality)
What's your budget?
Thanks for this. Having weighed your advice up with others' input I've opted for a Zoom H1 so that I can record externally altogether. The pre-amp in my Nikon 750 is actually quite hissy. Really appreciate it
I've been looking for a really good mic for quite some time an this seems really pleasant but it still keeps one question open and i would be really grateful if you could answer this question.
So i have a pretty noisy keyboard and the mic would primarily be used for recordings of game videos or livestreaming games. How much do you actually hear of the keyboard? does it filter it out or can you hear everything even thought the keyboard is on the back of the mic?
Thank you in advance and keep the good work up.
Biotron_ Good question and not something I've specifically tested. The mic is biased to pick up more from sound in front of it than behind but assuming the mic is next to the keyboard as you play, then it would depend a) how loud the rest of the gameplay is as to whether it masks the keyboard noise, and b) how noisy your keyboard actually is!
Even a full shotgun mic will pick up SOME sound from around it and if it were next to the keyboard, that would include the sound. So my guess is that yes, the Rode will pick up some keyboard noise. I would have imagined that would add to the ambience of the gameplay though, no?

If you're a singer and you tried this microphone, I'd love to read what you think about it
Awesome review by the way! Thanks for sharing
