It’s always so funny seeing young Americans discover Kylie for the first time! She’s an icon and a household name for the rest of the world for over 40 years now and has a pop career unparalleled. SO much more for you to learn about our amazing girl ❤
For perspective Kylie was already a huge household name in the UK and I presume in her native Australia by the time this song was released due to her character Charlene in the soap opera Neighbours. Neighbours was shown in the UK twice a day Monday to Friday and her characters onscreen wedding was watched by 20 million people in the UK.
@@Sultans-World I’m watching Neighbours from the start on Daily Motion, most episodes are there (some of the quality isn’t great though). Kylies 1st episode is 234. And you have to search each episode by episode number 👍🏻 not sure if Days of our Lives is there.
Kylie IS joy. Everyone who listens to Kylie can’t help but smile. The story goes that the producers in England forgot she was flying over from Oz to record her first song. She was on a massive hit tv show called Neighbours, and kids in Britain would bunk off school at lunch to go and watch Neighbours, so much so that they had to repeat the show at half five in the afternoon to stop the truancy. So the producers left Kylie in the waiting room and hurriedly wrote the song, got her into the studio, she sang it once and nailed it and went back to Oz. The show Neighbours was very wholesome, and although Kylie was a mechanic and a bit of a tomboy, it was still a different time of what dating was and the innocence of it all back then was high.
I bought this record in a record store in communist East Berlin/Germany for 10 East Mark ( a fortune back then in the Socialist republic of Germany) when we visited one afternoon with our schoolclass from West Germany- It was May 1989 and in October the wall came down..I think Kylie was 19 here, she already was a child TV actor in Australia. Successful Uk producer team Stock Aitken Waterman wrote thins song for her and this was her first record..(They were the masterminds behind Rick Astley, too)..
Do you still have it? I bought it on tape in Poland back then, but unfortunately I got rid of all my cassettes when I got enamoured with MP3s in 2000s.
This was Kylie's first international single. Written by British music giants (at the time) Stock, Aitken & Waterman. After huge success in the Australian soap 'Neighbours', her Australian record company set up a meeting with the British label PWL (Pete Waterman Ltd). The story goes that she had been kept waiting for almost a week in their lobby, and just a few hours before she was due to fly back to Australia, an A&R guy reminded the producers that Kylie was supposed to be recording a song with them and time was running out, to which Matt Aitken replied "she should be so lucky". 2 hours later, the song had been written, recorded and Kylie was on the plane back to Australia.
Fun fact: Kylie and Rick Astley were labelmates in the 80s. This and Never Gonna Give You Up were written and produced by the same people. In fact there was a live performance in 2018/19 of them performing together. Also there was an urban myth that Rick Astley actually sang on her records but the vocal was sped up 😂
And you forgot to mention that Rick Astley remixed his hit "Never Gonna Give You Up" with "I Should Be So Lucky". Which is the version they sang together in 2018.
This was number 1 in the UK for 6 weeks at the time. Kylie was already a household star at the time from her role in the Australian soap Neighbours. When an episode aired of her character and Jason Donavans character getting married it was watched by 20 million people.
She has a very long lasting career. You will probably need way more than a week to get to know her. There's just so many different tranformations of hers... We have 80's Kylie, Indie Kylie, Dance Kylie, Sexy Kylie, Disco Kylie, Country Kylie and the list keeps going. She is one of the very few artists that keeps on giving. Just this year she won another grammy for her song "Padam Padam", which is a banger you guys can't miss.
First time viewer. Hello 👋I am an 80's child and Kylie's first album (which this song is from) was the very first album I bought with my own money! It was on cassette and I can remember the album cover so clearly. It's funny what you remember!
I will say this, your optimism for the 80s makes me think that you should have a dedicated 80s Kylie week. She has another 8 singles from that period for you to hear.
This would be my list for you guys. #5 I should Be So Lucky #4 Confide In Me #3 Can't Get You Out Of My Head #2 Slow #1 Padam We're missing a lot, though. She has music that spans 5 decades.
Guyyys!! It's so fascinating watching younger American guys discovering Kylie. This lady is the equivalent of Madonna in the rest of the World, and her journey to where she is now 4 decades later being as an even bigger star globally is nothing short of incredible. Her history is fascinating - would love to see you discover Kylie more! Confide In Me, Better The Devil You Know, What Do I Have To Do, Slow, All The Lovers, In Your Eyes, Come Into My World (go for the Top Of The Pops Awards performance when she goes off piste with the Fischerspooner Remix!), In My Arms.... just go wild, you are in for a treat with this lady. Enjoy!
It's interesting you mention Rick Astley at the end - because both his and Kylie's first singles (including I Should Be So Lucky) were Stock, Aitken, Waterman productions. "SAW" had an incredible run of hit UK singles from the mid 80's to early 90's. Good spot.
Kylie was one of a roster of primarily British and Australian singers in the mid to late 1980s and early 90s, who worked with the British songwriting/ recording trio famously known as Stock, Aitken & Waterman. Other stars who sang their songs included Jason Donovan (who, alongside Kylie, became famous on the Australian soap, 'Neighbours' before trying a singing career), Rick Astley, Sonia, Dead Or Alive, Bananarama, Mel & Kim, Samantha Fox, Sinitta and others. You'll know a Stock, Aitken & Waterman song because they definitely have a similar sound - just listen to Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up and you have the general sound. After a while, their 'sound' became a bit of a joke because the songs started to sound really similar and a bit cheesy, although hits like 'I Should Be So Lucky' and 'Never Gonna Give You Up' are classics. The trio have sold over 500 million units worldwide and have a lot of awards, so regardless, they are incredibly successful.
Funny you suggested the sitcom thing! She first came to fame as an actress on the Australian soap Neighbours before pop stardom. Interested to see what's left on this little Kylie journey, cause she's got a LOT in her catalog to explore
Kylie flew to London, after the success of Locomotion in Australia, to record a song with Stock Aitken Waterman. They didn’t really know who she was and pretty much forgot about her coming. Kylie was about to return to Australia, but MIke Stock ended up writing I Should Be So Lucky in 40 minutes whilst she was waiting outside the studio.
FINALLY! 🎉 I'm so happy to see Kylie here. She really has evolved and has done a lot as a pop legend and an artist if you guys care to dive into her nearly 4 decade music career, yet I often think she is so underrated. Hopefully to see more Kylie content with your perspective and reaction! Really like you guys energy, keep on going !
This was her first single in the UK, written by stock, aikmen and waterman, the masterminds behind many 80s hits, her first actual single was Locomotion (which I'm sure you'll come across at some point) Locomotion was later released in the UK as the loco-motion. But interesting fact for you, as Mike said, kylie has been in the industry for 37 years, still releasing hits, and is the first female artist to have number one albums in 5 consecutive decades in the UK, but in relation to iI should be so lucky, stock aikmen and waterman forgot she was meeting them, and wrote the song in 30 minutes before she flew home to Australia that night
Actually, Kylie performed a mash up of I Should Be So Lucky and Never Gonna Give you Up with Rick Astley in radio 2 live in Hyde park festival back in 2018!
Fun fact: 80's Kylie and early 90's Kylie was definetly influenced by Madonna. 00's Madonna was highly inspired by late 90's and early 00's Kylie and she did not hide it... She even wore a t-shirt with Kylie's name on it during a performance on MTV.
As I understand, she went to a party in Melbourne Australia when she was very young and this song was playing and she sang to it and was asked to record it. She brings people so much joy and really loves what she's doing. She's never stopped in nearly 40 years. Very much like Madonna and would be epic if they did a duet together! ❤❤❤❤
Kylie is having fun with music. Today she records disco, tomorrow pop, the day after tomorrow country and then electro... She doesn't rest on her laurels, she searches, records and is simply Kylie ;)

Kylie was definitely inspired by Madonna, and Madonna adores her too! They both recently performed "I Will Survive" together at Madonna's recent tour, signifying how they've lasted in the industry for many decades and are still successful.
She was then produced by Stock, Aitken and Waterman, who also produced Rick Astley and their song had a lot of similarities. 80’s Kylie is the best! I hope all this top 5 will be from this era. She has material for loads of top 5’s for sure!

Interesting you mentioned Rick Astley - "I Should Be So Lucky' and 'Never Gonna Give You Up' were written by the same team and released in the same year! Fab energy from you both!
It will be an interesting week. She's a multi-decade-spanning pop star, and she goes through many different styles over the years. She's a veritable icon in Australia, the UK and Ireland in particular - this track is from the very beginning of her music career, when she was known primarily as a TV actress on an Australian soap opera. Few expected her to take off in the way she did.
In the UK each Xmas the number one single is an huge news item with people across the country betting on what it will be. A rumour started that she and her soap opera co-star Jason Donovan, had a single coming out and it jumped to the top of the betting odds just a few weeks before xmas. Turns out no such single existed. So her producers wrote a song almost overnight, got it recorded and released it..... and it sold millions...... I don't know if it will be in your top 5 as its a duet, but that was "Especially for you" .... very similar style stuff.....
The difference to Madonna - Kylie can really sing live! She is an amazing pop icon since 1988 until now. Stock / Aitken / Waterman, Kylie's British producer team, were legends! They were huge in the 80s/90s. They had so many hits. ... and yes, Rick Astley and Kylie worked with the same producer team - Stock/Aitken/Waterman. :-D #legends S/A/W wrote I should be so lucky in 30 minutes on the last day she was in London to record with them. They almost forgot she was there. She recorded it, flew back to Australia, and the rest is history. Number 1 in many countries.

A great feel good song to pep up one’s day. Love it!
OMG Kylie Minogue Week... I have dreamt of this moment
And still having hits. Her new single with The Blessed Madonna Edge of Saturday Night goes off
The video made no sense and I was confused the whole time. I loved it.
Woooohooooo Kylie!!!!
Love your reaction video bravo …there’s a huge catalog of Kylie music for you guys to discover …infinitely better than any American pop artist of the same genre
YESSS KYLIE WEEK LFG 🔥🔥
You BETTER react to Did It Again or Some Kind Of Bliss.
