    My wife and I were shopping around for a hybrid car and it was between this exact matchup: Prius XLE vs. this Civic. Ultimately we went with the Prius for a couple reasons:
    1. The vin number starts with a J
    2. We had more faith in Toyota’s hybrid system which has been around for a long long long time.
    The Civic is a handsome looking car inside and out, but I think the Prius is just so futuristic and beautiful. You just cant help but look back when you park it. And when you look at the different examples of Prius cars that make it past 300k+ miles with just some basic maintenance, it was a no brainer. We’re driving it until the wheels fall off.

    • @hctim96
      @hctim96 19 часов назад

      Plus the Prius has the direct and port injection. Honda just direct. Carbon build up?. Also will this suffer from the oil dilution of other hondas.. I'm a honda guy from way back so this is a difficult decision...

    • @slowgoat6089
      @slowgoat6089 14 часов назад +2

      The Prius has rear usb-c chargers and A/C for backseat riders, which the civic does not.

      I’ve been test driving both. I think the Honda has a quieter ride and feels less cramped but I’m going with the Prius for the longer hybrid battery warranty, better mpg and I don’t like moon roofs. Biggest deal breakers for me are the Honda has leather seats which smell intensely of chemicals. The Prius XLE can fit a spare tire but the Honda civic hybrid hatch sport touring can not.

    @timothycoyne5874 День назад +4

    For everyone who laments that this is faster than an Si, I’ll give you three counterpoints, plus one bonus.
    1. Yes, the hybrid is faster off the line, and yes, the Si should have more power than it does. But my understanding is the hybrid’s power trails off at or above freeway speeds, while the Si keeps going. Reported top speeds are 114 for the hybrid and 137 for the Si.
    2. The Si is slower off the line but handles much better in the corners, and that matters to enthusiasts. My Si is one of the best handling cars I’ve owned, which is impressive considering it’s FWD.
    3. The Si’s LSD makes a big difference in putting the power down in the corners. This is my first car with an LSD, and I’m sold on it.
    Bonus: Honda’s excellent 6-speed manual makes all the difference in the world.
    Bottom line: I don’t care if it’s not actually fast; my Si is an absolute blast to daily drive, rowing my own gears, tossing it around corners, and revving it up anytime I feel like it.
    Also, I drive conservatively more often than not, and I’m averaging 37 mpg in mixed driving, though more highway than city. The hybrid gets much better fuel economy, but it will never be as much fun to drive as an Si.
    Yes, I’m biased because I own a new Si. But I don’t hate the Hybrid. It’s a great car and Honda will sell tons of them, and I’m actually very happy about that. But it cannot replace the Si’s manual, handling, and cool factor.

    Joe, do you drive in the Cup series? Honda has another big hit! I'd pick the Civic over the Prius because the Prius has compromised ergonomics, and the Civic is fun to drive.

    I had a civc hybrid before and the transmission was trash. I guess it was like that for 2 generations. I dont think id risk it with this one as nice as it is and still go to a Prius if this is the car i was looking for.

      This is the system from the Accord. It's essentially an electric car around the city and a gas car on the highway. I don't think you can use the old hybrid as a point of reference.

    Don't care if Prius gets 10-15 mpg more. 40-45 mpg is good enough for me. Civic Hatch all the way. This thing is quick! It's comfortable and it's a hatch. Come on Joe, rear vents on a compact car? Not like you have a third row to reach people.

    I never once in my life imagined thinking of buying a honda. Now I am. I'm Canadian and the cost of gas is insane due to our terrible government and this ridiculous belief in "climate change", so a fast and responsive hybrid that honestly looks good is a good option, and I've driven a Ford pickup for the last 15 years

    At 22:50 you say it has a "Direct Drive Transmission" that does so much better than a CVT.
    What is a Direct Drive Transmission? Isn't it a CVT by another name?

    • @CDNChaoZ
      @CDNChaoZ 20 часов назад

      A CVT uses a system of cones and a belt to maximize power and efficiency, at the cost of reliability and feel. The Honda system here is direct drive electric up to like 50mph, then switches over to gas at highway cruising. No belt, higher reliability, feels like an electric car on acceleration with simulated shifts.

    Why do you refer to the transmission as direct drive and not a cvt when their own website says it’s an “Electronic continuously variable transmission”?

    • @CDNChaoZ
      @CDNChaoZ 20 часов назад +1

      Honda's branding for this transmission is frustrating. It's not a CVT in that it doesn't use a problematic belt. Around the city it's a direct drive off the electric motor. At highway it goes to gas.
      They really ought to not have used the CVT moniker because of the negative connotations it got from Nissan.
