Very informative. I notice that the planche lean tends to work more the anterior shoulders, while the tuck planche variations are more of a core strengthening exercise. Both compliment each well
Extend your arm in front of you. Bend your wrist up so that your palm is facing out and your fingers are pointing up. Now--without moving anything else--watch your biceps changes as you rotate your forearm until your fingers are pointing down. See how the shape of your biceps changes? This tells you that the position of your hand in the planche DOES matter. By turning your hands out until your fingers are point backward (Supinated), you're shifting more of the burden to the long-head of the biceps muscle.By keeping your hands forward so that your fingers point forward (pronated), more of the burden is on the short head biceps. And going somewhere in between--thumbs forward, fingers to the side--balances the burden across the short and long head of biceps, as well as the brachialis muscle that lies underneath both biceps head. So wait--which one am I recommending then? The biceps are the secondary muscle on a planche. The primary muscle group is the anterior (front) deltoids, but they'll be engaged no matter what you do with your hands. Juts make sure that your shoulder are both down and forward of your midline (pronated). For hand position, my *opinion* is the best position is with your thumb and forefinger forward, your remaining three fingers out to the side, because this achieves balanced engagement of short head biceps, long head biceps, and brachialis. But for athletes trying to develop planche strength, spend time on all three positions, forward, side, and back, to give each of these three muscles focused development. Change your hand position every two weeks until you achieve the skill, then settle in to thumb and forefinger forward position which offers good balance control even to people with only moderate wrist flexibility.

Great video. I've seen lots of videos on the subject...many are showing planche progression, but not explaining good exercises to do to get the beginner going. i want to ask a question, how long would you think it would take just purely dedicating planche workouts, to be able to do a full planche? i can bench press about 120 at the age of 15, early 15 and i only weigh about 116, and i can do alot of pullups and pushups and such
Official_Kreep it took me 2 months but im 14 and weigh about 180 and have been doing calisthenics for awhile so it was easier for me to learn but my friend is 120 and took him 4 months with th same training
Mac Laren ok thank you, I've been doing calesthetics for like a year, I can easily do the craddle planche right off the start so I'll have to work for it, ty
I'm learning the plansche as of now but always had the problem of finding an exercise that promotes full balance & stimuli to shoulders down to hands without climbing a tree. Thx this sure will help me progress faster!
Spot on bro. I just started working on the planche and coukdnt understand all the different work towards programs out there. Its fundamentally a lean so just start leaning! Then next most important is hand position.
awesome video honestly the best planche video ive seen on youtube! you addressed all the questions i had that other videos failed to mention like how often to train and if you could train planche and workout! super helpfull thanks!
Great video! Couple of question... How much time did it take you to achieve the full planche? And you do only this exercise when you train the planche?
really good video just wondering you are a little smaller channel than other bodybuilding/athletic channels and i was wondering how you get striations on your forearms? just training? would be awesome with a reply
The planche lean is the hardest concept to grasp. You have to lean much further than you think you need to. I had a Maltese on rings before I had a straight planche. My straddle planch was beefy too, I could hold it 20 sec, but couldn’t do a straight planche Longer than 3 sec
I've been training planche for about 3 months now and I'm able to hold an advanced tuck planche for a couple of seconds. I train almost everyday and do other exercises such as handstands, elbow levers,L sits and more. I will update my progress in a month and tell you how much I have progressed.
Simply not possible in my opinion. Just not possible to lift up and hold your feet up off the floor by just practising the lean! But i too would be interested in your comment in 2-3 months
You are not gonna get a full planche in just 2-3 months, it takes longer to get it as it is a really hard exercise. Well depends on your current calisthenics strenght/experience, but still
Really forget about the tuck planches forget about the progressions? 2:15 if you say so, do you have or is there any proof this will work? Anyone made it by following this advice (besides you)? Would like to know if so im going to start with it.
This will help with your shoulder strength, but if you have a weakness in your lower back or glutes, this will not train it. I agree it's better than tuck planche, as the balance and lean is different in tuck planche, so holding a tuck planche for longer and longer wont train your muscles in the right position.
hey austin check my planche progress, i'm really good with doin the planche with my fingers slightly to the side, but could that decrease my flexibility or will it increase flexibility? i've currently got a banana straddle for 7 secs and im striving for 10 secs
Fingers pointing forward is improper technique. Using that wrist placement can result in a wrist injury. If you are going to use that method you should have quite a decent wrist flexibility. I know this from personal experience. :)
The planche lean provides the shoulder strength to support a load, but unless you strengthen your core , you will be unable to keep your feet off of the ground.
Hey! How do you typically handle arm bend? I feel like with my hands back, my elbows sorta extend... kinda like an "arm bar" in brazilian jiu jitsu. But your arms look totally straight!
How much will it take to be able to do it, I'm almost intermediate, 50max push ups in a row, 24pull ups, 25 chin ups I've been training 1year and a half
Guillo von Büren The planche does not really have much to do with how many pull ups and push ups and stuff like that you can do. For this, straight arm strength and core strength are important. You have to let (mostly) your shoulders get used to the enormous pressure the planche causes, together with stability and balance, which is the core. It's a very different approach.
If your body adopts to the hold really quick even then it should take 6 months or so to get a half-ass planche. It took me a year to get to hold 10 sec advanced tuck planche but I love training gymnastic holds so much ,time is out of concern
Carlton Davis lol what can I say I always do at times. Hmm bicep peak, we both have different perspectives. But I don't have huge biceps like Austin here soooo I'll go along
