    This is the story of an Australian prospector by the name of Gabriel Read who found gold on the banks of the Tuapeka River in New Zealand.
    He wrote: "At a place where a kind of road crossed on a shallow bar I shoveled away about two and a half feet of gravel, arrived at a beautiful soft slate and saw the gold shining like the stars in Orion on a dark frosty night".

    Thanks for that, I live in Alexandra, shown on your map at the start of the clip.
    You can still put your pan pretty much anywhere here and get a few specks. Flour gold, fine as dust. But one day.... maybe the biggie, heh.

      I'm not sure what there is for ghost towns in NZ. I have a couple friends who live around Greymouth who use to mine around Ross. I think it would be a neat country to tour if your into placer gold mining. Thanks for watching.

    My great grand father ,John McCurdy , was early gold rush miner . He had a number - Tuapeka gold feilds . Set up as a coal merchant in Dundin . Wife and child came from Ballycastle once established .8 more children .

      Awesome Stuff contributing with history and thanks for sharing. My great great grandfather was on the second ship to nz, where I was born but now live in Australia since 1967. Some fantastic stories coming from those era's!

    gabriel reid did not find the gold it was an Indian man called Black Peter who told Gabriel Reid who took the credit and the reward Black Peter died in poverty. There is a monument to Black Peter at Mt Stewart reserve at Glenore acknowledging this fact had he not been of Indian Decent he would have had the fame and glory of Gabriel Reid.
