  • Welcome back to mBlyden Vlogs after a two-month hiatus! In this thought-provoking episode, I delve into a topic close to my heart in "Are We Losing Our Culture?" I explore the concern that several cherished childhood activities and games are fading away, no longer passed down to the younger generation. It's a reflection on the potential loss of cultural richness as these activities seem to be forgotten with each passing day.
I invite you to share your thoughts in the comments section below. Do you observe the same trend? What can we do collectively to revive these cultural gems and ensure they are passed on to our children? Let's engage in a meaningful conversation about preserving our cultural heritage.
Amidst these reflections, the video concludes on a nostalgic and uplifting note. We revisit a timeless tradition-the Rising Stars Steel Pan Orchestra playing enchanting melodies at Christmas time. I've included two renditions from the steel pan orchestra to wrap up the vlog.
Sit back, ponder, and enjoy the beautiful melodies that connect us to the heart of our culture. Don't forget to share your thoughts in the comments, and let's embark on a journey to rediscover and celebrate the treasures of our cultural heritage together! #stthomas #christmastime #risingstarssteelorchestra

Its up to us as ADULTS to instill our culture and traditions in our children to keep it going. I think the loss of culture through out the west indies is due to all the new technology the kids now have. My generation all we did was plays sports and the games that you mentioned. We were never in the house at all, WE WENT TO THE BEACH BY OURSEVLES AS KIDS ( we walked to bolongo)......that is absolutely unheard of now , your parents would be brought up on some kind of child endangerment charge :) . Unfortunately times change and so do traditions.

As a tourist coming there…I would rather take a tour with a local born islander than from someone who is from somewhere else! Spending time with the locals there is the best! I would love to take a tour with you!

I remember when I first moved to St Thomas back in 1974 I would see lots of little boys selling the Daily News. Yes, and in St John a group of folks at Christmas would be Caroling all through Cruz Bay. It was wonderful ❤ I miss those days.

I’m in the US and this is a conversation myself and my peers talk about as well. I was born in 1980 and the kids nowadays as a whole do not do the things I’ve done as a child. I moved to North Carolina from New York and although they didn’t really jump double Dutch in North Carolina, the kids in New York aren’t doing those things as much either. Kids don’t go out to play anymore whereas when I was young we were always outside in NY and in NC. A lot of that I think is attributed to technology. Most kids are on their phones, tablets, and play stations. But also I’ll add NY is losing a lot of its culture as well. Although there were always people from other areas in NY…it still maintained its original culture. The people that moved into the area assimilated into the already existing culture. Whereas, I’ll say changes are being made to cater to the people that are moving in now. I’m always watching videos about our Island neighbors because I love the essence of it. I personally don’t want to visit an island that feels like the United States lol. It’s the main reason I prefer some islands over others because some are more Americanized. I hope all of you guys are able to maintain the distinct Island culture !!
I also wanted to add I came to this video after watching your video about the funds received from the hurricanes in 2017 not being allocated correctly to make necessary repairs and rebuild the school. I’m no politician but the passion you had behind your stance on rebuilding the schools and education, you’ve never thought of running for any office position there in the VI ?

Thanks for watching the videos. I remember having PlayStation and Nintendo growing up but we still were outside. I wonder why electronics still have more of a pull now? I have been asked previously about running for office, but my current “religious” beliefs doesn’t jive with holding a “public office” right now.

@@mblydenvlogs yes. I remember Atari then Nintendo and Sega genesis then the PlayStations and Xbox’s came along. I think one reason is because of the virtual reality of a lot of the games now. Back then we could only play with whoever had the second controller and was in the same room with us. Also with the introduction of the internet and social media even bullying is on an entirely different level. Before if someone was bullied it was just at school and maybe right after. But now it carries over into life at home…after the child leaves school. Technology has it perks but I think it’s a gift and a curse.
I have a 9yo son and we do things like play catch and ride our bikes and he plays with his cars and we play board games. Him and his little friend play with their nerf guns. I limit his electronic use. He can only use it on weekends or if on break and I limit it to 2hrs. I notice it really does keep his child-like creativity going. He’s been teaching himself to play the keyboard and drums and guitar. But if I let him play those games on his tablet all of the time, I don’t think he would do any of those other things.
I absolutely understand the conflicting interest between the two.

While I enjoyed my vacation in St Thomas last June I was struck by the lack of cultural attractions in Charlotte Amalie. Would love to see an immersive art museum with cultural artifacts. I don't want to visit a fake pirate museum but more on African culture (i,e, Moko Jumbie). I know there is a museum in St Croix but many tourist don't get to visit all of the islands and with St Thomas being a major hub it seems only natural for a home of a nice museum and cultural center.

That is a great idea 💡 st Croix has a small little house on the fair grounds that serves as a type of museum. It houses several artifacts and trinkets from back in the day. It’s featured in my ag fair video from last year.

Jacks, I’ve seen sets of jacks when I was a kid in the 70’s, never knew how to play it. Only spun the jacks to see them spin like a dreadal.

Yes, and sadly, we are indeed losing our culture as US Virgin Islanders.
As one from the USVI diaspora (my grandfather was born in Christiansted, 1917, around the time when the VI was annexed to the United States from Denmark), noticed a great erosion in VI culture.
Moreover, it is not just the US, my home country, but various islands coming into the USVI and staking their claim, i.e., replacing soca for salsa, Carnival for friendship day, Cruzian Christmas for three kings, etc. 😠
    Smh...
It is not just the west, US, but our neighbors, i.e. Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, etc.
    Smh...

Playing jacks, and shooting marbles are childhood games lost to time in the States too. Kids that aren’t in team sports do all their play w electronic console games, Pokémon go, and any game on their phones. Little girls do still slip rope tho :)

  • @robertpierce1981

The erosion is due in my eyes mostly to tourism. Too many off islanders bringing their desires and habits to the island. The global melting pot isn’t good for cultural heritage. It’s the dilution of the world.
I’d still like to see a video of you and a friend playing marbles with the rules in force and some double Dutch also.
Myself living in Pennsylvania the local traditions are long past gone. There is no “local.”
Best wishes for islandic culture moving forward.

@@mblydenvlogs Kids now days are playing video games, sitting on social media all day, and acting like adults. We used to play outside, we played Nintendo, we danced, went horseback riding, fishing, and we cooked together as a family. My family used to be close and we used to spend the night at each other's house, but now we don't spend time together anymore. We don't celebrate holidays together anymore.
